Horror Chapter
The darkness that descended this time came so suddenly that it caught everyone off guard.
Jiang Liu was briefly startled, but he quickly regained his composure. Realizing the situation, he shouted loudly into the surrounding darkness, "Everyone stay where you are and don't move!"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Jiang Liu heard faint footsteps beside him, followed by a hand emerging from the shadows to cover his mouth.
Jiang Liu's heart raced in terror, thinking a ghost was about to attack him. Just as he was about to struggle against the grip, a familiar voice whispered in his ear. It was Wang Chao.
Wang Chao's voice was low and urgent as he said softly, "Don't speak; it will expose your location."
At first, Jiang Liu didn't understand why Wang Chao urged him to remain silent, but it soon became clear.
From the darkness not far away, a piercing scream suddenly echoed, sharp and jarring.
Jiang Liu could sense the fear in that scream, but then he heard muffled groans and the sound of something heavy hitting the ground, causing his face to turn pale.
The human fear of darkness seems to be instinctual; those trapped in it can become like wild beasts, cornered and desperate.
No matter who it is or what their intentions may be, anyone appearing around a beast at such a moment would provoke its survival instincts.
Wang Chao understood humanity's darker nature well. So when darkness fell, he relied on his memory to quickly reach Smiling Man and Lin Feng, warning them not to move.
As for Jiang Liu, having performed well in previous encounters with darkness, Wang Chao believed he could discern the situation effectively. He never expected Jiang Liu would shout out loud at such a critical moment—an act that was nothing short of suicidal.
With no other choice, Wang Chao released the two and moved toward Jiang Liu's side to cover his mouth.
The screams seemed just to have begun; following the first cry were various other sounds—some filled with terror, others with anger and curses.
With each scream that pierced the air, Jiang Liu's face grew paler, his mind involuntarily conjuring up bloody scenes.
Darkness easily distorts one’s sense of time; every second felt like a century for Jiang Liu. The occasional screams and moans from the surrounding shadows relentlessly tormented their nerves.
Gradually, the surrounding darkness fell silent, and the only sounds Jiang Liu could hear were the beats of his own heart and the calm, steady breaths of Wang Chao beside him.
At that moment, light descended, transforming the imagined bloody scene into a grim reality before everyone's eyes.
The first thing that caught their sight was the bodies sprawled haphazardly across the floor, crimson blood pooling in large patches throughout the room, the heavy stench of blood permeating the air.
In the entire room, aside from Jiang Liu and his three companions, only five people remained alive. Upon seeing the corpses and blood covering the ground, those five survivors realized what they had just done. Unable to bear the gruesome sight, they all leaned against the walls and began to vomit.
Jiang Liu and Wang Chao had witnessed scenes far more gruesome than this before, so they did not react much.
Lin Feng had previously seen a bloody scene in a classroom, so he was not as overwhelmed as he had been at first; he merely felt a bit nauseous from the intense smell of blood.
The Smiling Man suppressed his urge to retch, turning his face away to avoid looking at the horrific scene.
Wang Chao glanced at his classmates who were now unrecognizable from vomiting and spoke with a cruel tone, "This simplifies things; there are only five of us left. Even if our earlier assumptions were wrong, as long as we take care of them, this incident should come to an end."
Jiang Liu grabbed Wang Chao's arm as he prepared to act. "Wait a minute; my instincts tell me something is off."
"What could possibly be off? There are only us left in this room. If they aren't ghosts, it doesn't matter; we still have those two," Wang Chao said, pointing at The Smiling Man and Lin Feng without regard for their uncertain expressions.
On his list of suspects, Jiang Liu had the least likelihood of being a ghost since he had been with Wang Chao from the beginning. If killing the five survivors did not end the incident as imagined, then Wang Chao would choose to eliminate The Smiling Man first, followed by Lin Feng.
He didn't believe that by that time, the incident would still be unresolved.
"Something's not right. There's one thing I haven't figured out," Jiang Liu said as he looked at The Smiling Man. "That girl you mentioned earlier named Xu Ya—was she from our class? Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure. I saw her in class before," The Smiling Man replied confidently.
"Why are you asking about this all of a sudden? Didn't that girl named Xu Ya die already? Are you still suspecting her of being a ghost?"
Wang Chao couldn't understand why Jiang Liu was still puzzled over someone who had already died at this point.
Ignoring Wang Chao's words, Jiang Liu furrowed his brows and pondered for a moment before asking, "Do you have any memory of a girl named Xu Ya?"
"No," Wang Chao replied impatiently.
"Think carefully, because this name feels familiar to me, like I've heard it somewhere before."
Seeing Jiang Liu's serious expression, Wang Chao realized that Jiang Liu might be onto something. Suppressing his anger, he recalled, "I'm sure there isn't a girl like that in our class, but so what?"
"The key lies here!" Jiang Liu pointed at his head. "I don't have any memory of this girl named Xu Ya either, and neither do you. As for Lin Feng, I doubt he even knows the average person in our class. But why do I feel a sense of familiarity, and yet Smiling Man and the others remember her? Haven't you thought about that?"
Wang Chao was taken aback, trying to understand why only the two of them had no impression of Xu Ya. After all, they had been quietly observing everyone in the class since before school started; he had even memorized the faces of every student.
After thinking for a moment, Wang Chao asked, "Are you suggesting that our memories have been altered separately?"
"I don't know," Jiang Liu shook his head and continued, "If our memories were altered separately, then why were we both made to forget Xu Ya's existence? By the way, did any other students leave the classroom before we did?"
This last question was directed at Smiling Man, who shook his head. "No, after you left, no one else left the classroom. I'm certain Xu Ya was encountered only after we arrived at the dormitory."
After hearing Smiling Man's words, Jiang Liu's brows knitted even tighter. Unable to make sense of it all, he decided to follow the method Wang Chao had previously suggested and reanalyze the entire situation to see if there were any unexpected discoveries.
