Wang Chao instantly understood the meaning behind Jiang Liu's words. Recalling the moment before the lights went out, he squeezed Jiang Liu's hand to signal that he was aware.
What puzzled him was that earlier, he and Jiang Liu had speculated that the ghost behind this supernatural event was Teacher Mei. However, just before the lights went out, he was certain he hadn't seen Teacher Mei in the room. So who could the ghost Jiang Liu mentioned be?
Could it be that the ghost wasn't Teacher Mei? Or was there more than one ghost involved in this incident?
As Wang Chao pondered these thoughts in the darkness, Jiang Liu, also enveloped in shadows, wore a similarly perplexed expression.
The chaos he had imagined did not unfold as he expected; everything around them was eerily quiet.
At the moment the lights went out, he had braced himself for the worst, anticipating that the crowd would panic and scatter. In such a scenario, if two people were to meet in the dark, their greetings would surely change.
It was precisely because of this worry that when darkness fell, Jiang Liu immediately grabbed hold of both individuals to prevent them from running off. What surprised him, however, was that the crowd across from them did not seem to be in a state of panic; it was clear they were not strangers to such situations.
Just as both of them were troubled by how long this darkness would last, a series of footsteps suddenly echoed from the shadows nearby.
Jiang Liu initially thought these footsteps belonged to the crowd across from them, but upon listening closely, his expression changed drastically; it became extremely grim.
The sound of those footsteps was hauntingly familiar—so familiar it sent chills down his spine!
Those footsteps were unmistakably the sound of high heels they had heard earlier in the dormitory corridor.
Wang Chao seemed to have recognized the sound as well; he tightened his grip on Jiang Liu's hand as if to remind him.
Fortunately, the footsteps did not approach their direction but instead grew fainter until that terrifying sound of high heels faded into the distance.
Only then did their hearts settle. At that moment, the lights flickered back on.
As Jiang Liu's eyes adjusted to the light, he immediately looked in the direction from which the footsteps had come, only to find no one there; the crowd was gathered in another direction.
He glanced suspiciously at the crowd but saw nothing unusual. At first, he thought the footsteps were just a figment of his imagination, but when he noticed Wang Chao looking at him with a similarly puzzled expression, his doubts began to fade.
The crowd across from them stirred as the lights brightened, and soon a boy stepped out from the throng, calling out to Jiang Liu and his companions, "Are you three human or ghosts?"
"Of course we're human! Have you really forgotten us after such a long separation?" Wang Chao replied.
Upon hearing Wang Chao's response, the boy returned to the crowd, seemingly discussing something with others.
Jiang Liu and his friends waited patiently. Before long, the same boy emerged again and asked them, "How can you prove that you're human?"
"What do you want us to do to prove it?"
"You just need to tell us how to leave this place," the boy continued.
"If we knew how to leave here, would we even be here?" Wang Chao found the boy's words hard to believe.
However, Jiang Liu sensed something different in the boy's tone and quickly stopped Wang Chao from continuing. He spoke up instead, "Hello there. From what you just said, do you know what's going on?"
The boy seemed to realize he had misspoken and adopted a more curt tone. "Why are you asking so many questions about how to leave? Just tell us!"
Wang Chao could hardly tolerate being spoken to like that and was ready to roll up his sleeves and confront the boy. But Jiang Liu grabbed him and held him back.
"Listen, we don't understand how we ended up here. How can you expect us to know how to leave?" Jiang Liu said politely.
Hearing this, the boy frowned. "You three really don't know what's going on here?"
When Jiang Liu and his friends shook their heads, the boy glanced back at the crowd before turning back to them. "Do you mean you don't know about supernatural events?"
As soon as the words were spoken, Jiang Liu and Wang Chao's expressions turned extremely shocked, and even Lin Feng, who was standing nearby, looked at the two with a face full of surprise.
Jiang Liu suppressed the impulse within him and tried to make his expression appear very puzzled. "What is your supernatural event?"
Since the boy was standing a distance away from Jiang Liu and the others, he couldn't see their changing expressions and assumed they truly didn't know. He immediately began explaining the supernatural event to the three of them.
After listening to the boy's explanation, Jiang Liu realized that the supernatural event he described was exactly what he had learned about. This left him in shock; after all, the supernatural events Jiang Liu knew about were only revealed to him after he had survived near-death experiences, and he had paid a great price for that knowledge.
From Lin Feng's skeptical expression, it was clear that he was starting to doubt the consequences Jiang Liu had mentioned earlier.
Swallowing hard, Jiang Liu displayed a look of skepticism. "It's not that we don't believe what you're saying, but your method seems too..."
The boy seemed to anticipate that Jiang Liu and the others wouldn't believe him. He pointed at the walls around them. "Then how do you explain this secret room? How do you explain your sudden appearance here?"
Jiang Liu had already noticed from the beginning that the room they found themselves in was a secret chamber, so he pretended to be panicking as he looked around. Wang Chao also feigned ignorance, though he only just realized that this was indeed a secret room.
Seeing the other two acting, Lin Feng could only pretend to be clueless as well; however, his shock upon discovering that the room was a secret chamber was genuine.
While observing the surroundings of the room, Jiang Liu rapidly thought about what was happening. Why did this boy know about supernatural events? From the expressions of others in the crowd, Jiang Liu could tell that everyone seemed to be aware of these supernatural occurrences.
