Wang Chao's discovery was not good news for the three of them. From the expressions on the faces of the crowd across from them, it was clear that they were extremely wary of the sudden appearance of Jiang Liu and his companions, and within that wariness lay a hint of fear that puzzled him.
Jiang Liu believed that the crowd had recognized their identities, but he couldn't understand why, despite this recognition, they remained so defensive.
At that moment, Wang Chao leaned closer to Jiang Liu and asked, "What do they mean by this?"
"I don't know what they mean, but I do know that if this continues, we might end up dead at their hands."
Jiang Liu glanced at a few boys in the crowd who seemed eager to charge forward, feeling a sense of worry. Although he wasn't sure if there was some misunderstanding between them, he could see the crowd starting to stir, and he knew time was running out.
Lin Feng had also assessed the situation. He approached the two and asked, "Aren't those our classmates? What happened to them?"
"Don't ask me; I'm just as confused as you are about what's going on," Wang Chao replied irritably.
After Wang Chao's frustration, Lin Feng turned to Jiang Liu. Jiang Liu's attitude towards Lin Feng was relatively gentle as he shook his head and explained, "I’m not sure either, but I’m certain they’ve recognized us; it’s just—"
At this point, Jiang Liu suddenly seemed to realize something. He quickly turned to look around at the walls. After surveying the area, his expression grew even more grim.
Wang Chao and Lin Feng noticed Jiang Liu's actions and mimicked him by scanning their surroundings. However, apart from the stark white walls, they found nothing unusual.
Wang Chao nudged Jiang Liu's arm and asked, "What's wrong? Why does your face look so bad all of a sudden?"
Jiang Liu's voice began to tremble as he uttered a baffling statement, "This is the last place."
"The last place? What do you mean?" Wang Chao asked, puzzled.
Just as Jiang Liu was about to share his thoughts with the others, the enormous glass light above them suddenly went out, plunging the surroundings into absolute darkness.
Jiang Liu reacted swiftly; the moment the light extinguished, he hurriedly reached out to grab Wang Chao and Lin Feng, shouting, "Don't move!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Jiang Liu felt a rush of wind in front of him. At the same time, Wang Chao's voice came from beside him, "I almost lost my balance. Next time, at least give me a heads-up. Otherwise, if I throw a punch, you might end up on the ground."
Jiang Liu could only smile bitterly in his heart, unsure how to respond. He decided to change the subject and asked Lin Feng if he was alright.
In the darkness, Lin Feng replied with a quivering voice, "I... I'm fine."
"What should we do now? It's pitch black around us; we can't see anything," Wang Chao questioned.
"Let's step back a few paces until we reach the wall," Jiang Liu suggested. In such darkness, finding a wall was the best way to avoid getting lost.
The three of them held hands and slowly retreated step by step. Walking in the dark was an extreme test of their courage. Although they knew the wall was not far behind them, the inability to see anything made their imaginations run wild enough to frighten most people.
What if a ghost suddenly appeared behind them? Or what if a bottomless abyss emerged where there had once been a solid white wall?
The rich imagination made Lin Feng feel that every step he took was a torment. He didn't know how long he had been walking until his heel kicked against a hard wall, and only then did he realize they had retreated to the wall.
The cold wall brought a long-lost sense of security to the three of them, and Wang Chao's voice echoed in the darkness.
"Jiang Liu, what did you mean when you said this was the last place?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Wang Chao felt Jiang Liu's grip on his hand tighten noticeably. Then, Jiang Liu released his hand and quickly wrote a few characters in his palm.
The absolute darkness obscured Wang Chao's vision but greatly heightened his sense of touch. The moment the writing was complete, Wang Chao understood what Jiang Liu was conveying in his palm.
