As they left the area, Jiang Liu and Lin Feng maintained a distance of about one meter from Wang Chao. This way, in case of any sudden situation, both he and Lin Feng would have enough time to react.
Wang Chao noticed this as well, but after a few glances, he said nothing and continued to lead the way forward.
Jiang Liu was suspicious of him. Wasn't Wang Chao also secretly doubting whether Jiang Liu was genuine? The experiences they had just gone through had already planted seeds of doubt in their hearts. The distance between them was an unspoken agreement, whether for him or for Jiang Liu. As for Lin Feng, to be honest, Wang Chao hadn't really concerned himself with his life or death.
Although he and Jiang Liu had entered the dormitory to find Lin Feng, it was the shadow that had flashed by on the sixth floor that truly compelled their decision.
After walking for a while, they were still wandering in the corridor on the fourth floor, with darkness stretching endlessly before and behind them.
Wang Chao and Jiang Liu's faces began to look grim again. Since entering the dormitory, their expressions had never improved. Lin Feng still appeared frightened, closely following Jiang Liu, afraid that if he let his guard down for even a moment, the two in front of him would vanish like the false Wang Chao from earlier.
Perhaps because nothing had happened for so long, Lin Feng's courage gradually grew. He began to observe his surroundings, but as he did so, he realized they were still wandering in the corridor on the fourth floor.
In his memory, this corridor leading to their dormitory was not this long. They had already been walking for about ten minutes; no corridor could possibly stretch on like this without an end in sight.
Gradually, fear crept back into him. He looked at the other two who had remained silent and noticed they showed no signs of concern; they continued walking through the corridor as if they were completely oblivious to this bizarre scene.
He could only suppress his fear and continue following them. However, after several more minutes without seeing an end to the corridor, he finally couldn't hold back any longer and whispered to Jiang Liu:
“Jiang Liu, have you noticed that this corridor we're walking seems excessively long?”
Though he spoke softly, in the eerie silence of the corridor where even a falling pin could be heard clearly, no matter how low Lin Feng tried to keep his voice, it reached Wang Chao's ears.
Lin Feng's words shattered the unspoken understanding between Jiang Liu and Wang Chao. Almost simultaneously, both stopped in their tracks.
Jiang Liu spoke first: “It seems something is preventing us from leaving the fourth floor.”
Wang Chao turned around to look at them and asked, “What should we do now?”
“I don’t know.” Jiang Liu pinched his nose and furrowed his brow tightly. “I have a feeling we might have overlooked something.”
Seeing Jiang Liu perform his usual unconscious gesture made Wang Chao chuckle softly: “Looks like you are indeed genuine.”
Jiang Liu was momentarily taken aback, but he quickly grasped what Wang Chao meant and wanted to chuckle. However, in this situation, he couldn't bring himself to laugh and could only say, "If you know my usual habits, it seems you really do."
The two exchanged a glance, and the previous doubts between them vanished with that one sentence.
Lin Feng, watching from the side, felt confused and had no idea what they were discussing, so he remained silent and listened to their conversation.
"What do you think we overlooked earlier?" Wang Chao asked.
"I don't know; everything that happened today has completely disrupted my thoughts, and I can't sort them out," Jiang Liu replied after a moment of contemplation. He looked at Wang Chao and said, "While everything is still calm, let's go over the entire sequence of events from the beginning."
Now that he knew Jiang Liu was genuine, Wang Chao clearly handed over all the thinking to Jiang Liu.
Wang Chao had a fair amount of trust in Jiang Liu's reasoning. Throughout the events that had transpired, Jiang Liu had undoubtedly demonstrated his exceptional intelligence, despite occasionally acting a bit neurotic.
As for Lin Feng, neither of them asked for his opinion, so he quietly listened from the side.
"If my memory serves me right, I was the third to notice something was off about the incident. It was when you approached me and told me we might be caught up in a supernatural event. Am I correct?"
"That's right. I remember I approached you to verify if you were the same kind of person as I am," Wang Chao confirmed.
"And then after that, we witnessed the first victim with our own eyes—a girl who jumped to her death. We sought clues and found Library Grandpa; then he met a tragic end."
"Yes, at the same time, the third victim also appeared—someone who died in the classroom," Wang Chao added.
"Later on, we found clues in the resource room regarding Jia Ren. The next day after we communicated with Jia Ren, he died outside almost immediately. Then later on, a woman called us to the police station and gave us a box of recordings. From those recordings, we obtained what Jia Ren had left behind. Finally, there was the sudden incident at school where everyone disappeared."
After finishing his recounting, Jiang Liu looked at Wang Chao and asked, "Have I missed anything so far?"
Wang Chao reflected on his memories from earlier and realized Jiang Liu hadn't overlooked anything significant. He shook his head and replied, "No."
"Since that's settled, does that mean I've overlooked something about today? Was there something about today that felt off?" Jiang Liu kept questioning himself.
At that moment, Wang Chao spoke up: "If we're talking about something being off today, I think it might be the ghost that impersonated us earlier."
"What do you mean?"
"Don't you find it strange?" Wang Chao retorted. "After we met up, I've been wondering why the ghost wanted to separate us. If it was just to kill us, there would be no need for all this extra effort, especially pretending to be us."
"What do you mean by that?"
Jiang Liu originally intended for Wang Chao to share his thoughts, but Wang Chao shook his head. "I don't know. This is something you should think about; I can only share my feelings with you."
Jiang Liu helplessly pinched his nose and asked, "Then express your feelings."
Wang Chao pondered for a moment. "I feel like the ghost isn't trying to kill us, at least not immediately. Otherwise, it wouldn't bother to impersonate us. To me, it seems like the ghost wants to take us somewhere else."
"But why would the ghost do that? Where does it want to take us?"
"How would I know? If you really want to find out, you should ask the ghost." Wang Chao continued, "There's something else I want to ask you. Why are you so determined to find this guy?"
Wang Chao was referring to Lin Feng, who stood nearby. He couldn't understand Jiang Liu's reasoning. When he first encountered Jiang Liu, he was still searching for Lin Feng, and although he found him, putting himself in danger just to find an ordinary person in this eerie building didn't align with Wang Chao's previous understanding of Jiang Liu.
