Horror Chapter
As the door swung open, the warm, blinding sunlight outside illuminated the faces of the two.
Jiang Liu couldn't tell if it was just his imagination, but when the sunlight streamed into the room, it seemed to dispel the chilling terror that had filled the space moments before. They dared not linger and bolted outside, only stopping when they were over a hundred meters away from the data room.
Looking back at the still-open iron door of the data room, Wang Chao felt a lingering fear. "Looks like my luck isn't as bad as I thought. I almost believed we were going to die in there."
Jiang Liu nodded in agreement, still shaken. Although nothing had happened in that dark data room, the pervasive chill had kept their nerves on edge, ready to snap at any moment.
"By the way, did you bring out the student files we found?" Jiang Liu suddenly asked.
"What about you?" Wang Chao waved the file he was holding. "We risked our lives to get this; there's no way I'd lose it."
Seeing that Wang Chao had indeed kept the file brought a sigh of relief to Jiang Liu. After all, they had faced significant danger to retrieve it; losing it while escaping would have been devastating.
"Now that we have it, let's take a look," Jiang Liu urged.
"Don't rush me."
Despite his words, Wang Chao quickly opened the file. As he pulled out the document, Jiang Liu saw a photo of a handsome young man with short hair and a bright smile.
"Name: Jia Ren, male, graduated on [date] from Classroom 000. Yes, that's him! He was in Classroom 000 and lived until graduation. This person could very well be our most important lead," Wang Chao analyzed confidently.
Jiang Liu interjected, "Don't get too ahead of yourself. Have you forgotten about the old man's situation?"
As soon as the old man was mentioned, Wang Chao felt like a deflated rooster, his excitement instantly doused by a bucket of cold water. Frowning, he said, "Well, the old man's death was quite suspicious last time. It seems we need to plan this out carefully."
"What else can we plan? The most important thing right now is to see if there's any contact information for Jia Ren in the documents. If there's nothing recorded here, all our efforts will be in vain."
"Right, let's quickly check for any contact details."
Just as Wang Chao pulled out the entire sheet of paper, he suddenly stopped. Jiang Liu, seeing Wang Chao halt his actions, stared blankly at the file and asked, "What are you dawdling for? Hurry up and open it!"
"It's not that," Wang Chao turned to Jiang Liu and explained, "When I opened the door just now, I think my luck ran out. I'm afraid if I pull this out and there’s no contact information, what will we do?"
Hearing Wang Chao's explanation, Jiang Liu nearly spat out a mouthful of blood in frustration. He looked at Wang Chao helplessly and said, "Can you please stop being so superstitious?"
"But ghosts have appeared; what's wrong with being a little superstitious?"
Jiang Liu was momentarily speechless. He had always been an atheist, and despite having experienced numerous supernatural events, he still did not believe in the existence of gods or anything similar. He would rather accept the existence of ghosts than acknowledge deities. He feared that if he accepted the idea of gods, his entire worldview might collapse.
Noticing Jiang Liu's silence, Wang Chao handed him the file and said, "I'm worried my luck has run out, so it's better if you open this document."
Jiang Liu stared at Wang Chao for a few seconds without speaking before silently taking the file and pulling it open. Meanwhile, Wang Chao was visibly excited, acting like a gambler in a movie who kept shouting "Open it! Open it! Open it!"
"Hey, don’t listen to him!" Wang Chao called out.
It turned out that Jiang Liu had paused his actions because he couldn't stand Wang Chao's incessant shouting.
"Can you please stop calling?"
"Uh, fine, I won't call anymore. You go ahead," Wang Chao replied awkwardly.
Jiang Liu looked at Wang Chao with a sense of helplessness. After experiencing several life-and-death situations together, he had discovered this amusing side of Wang Chao, and perhaps that was why they felt more relaxed around each other.
At the moment they pulled out the file, it was impossible for their hearts not to race, much like waiting for the lottery results. Finally, when the file was fully opened, they both turned their attention to the contact information section at the same time.
As if blessed by the goddess of fortune, a string of numbers appeared prominently in Jia Ren's contact information column—undoubtedly the way to reach him. Instantly, their spirits lifted.
"See? I told you I would get it right," Wang Chao said excitedly from the side.
"Don't celebrate too early. What if this person named Jia Ren changed his phone number? All our efforts would be in vain," Jiang Liu countered, trying to dampen Wang Chao's enthusiasm.
"Can you not be so negative? What harm does a little optimism do?" Wang Chao looked at Jiang Liu in disbelief. "Have you forgotten what you just said in the data room?"
Mentioning that made Jiang Liu feel somewhat frustrated. From the very beginning of this supernatural incident, things seemed to unfold in the direction he feared most. It was quite unbelievable, as if he had an innate tendency for bad luck.
"Alright, let's not dwell on that anymore," Jiang Liu gestured for Wang Chao to stop discussing it and quickly changed the subject. "Since we have obtained the contact information, we should find this person next."
"Yeah, but it seems we don't have much time to locate someone named Jia Ren."
"In that case, I think we can ask Teacher Mei for leave."
"Were you able to do that?" Wang Chao's expression showed surprise; he hadn't expected this approach.
"It should work," Jiang Liu replied, analyzing the file on someone named Jia Ren. "This method just occurred to me. Earlier, we speculated that the ghost might be active based on the class schedule, right?"
"Yes, that's what you said."
"Then let's think about it from another angle. If the ghost really does operate according to the class schedule, we can take advantage of the times when it can't kill to conduct our search."
"Your hypothesis is too risky," Wang Chao frowned in response. "And it's just a guess; the likelihood isn't very high."
"No, I've actually already validated this hypothesis," Jiang Liu said, directing his gaze toward the data room. "From what we observed in the data room earlier, even though the ghost was in the same room with us, it didn't attack. This indicates that the ghost isn't capable of killing at all times; it has limitations."
"Go on," Wang Chao urged Jiang Liu to continue.
"So I think we can ask Teacher Mei for a few days off, and as long as we pay attention to the time frames, we should be safe from any unexpected incidents."
"That sounds reasonable. Since we have no other options left, we might as well try your method."
Wang Chao found Jiang Liu's suggestion feasible and decided not to argue further. With their plan confirmed, the two of them headed toward the classroom without hesitation.
