Horror Chapter
After listening to Lin Yun recount the entire incident, Chu Ping's brows furrowed even deeper as he bit his lower lip.
"Do you think Xu Ya might have..."
Lin Yun didn't finish her sentence, but both of them understood the grim fate that awaited Xu Ya, who had suddenly vanished.
"Don't jump to conclusions just yet; we haven't seen a body," Chu Ping reassured her.
"What should we do now? Xu Ya has disappeared without a trace, and we still haven't found the book. Her sudden disappearance makes me feel like something strange is going on," Lin Yun voiced her lingering doubts.
"This supernatural event started to feel off with Xu Ya's appearance. Although it's hard to believe, since it has already happened, all we can do now is stay focused," Chu Ping replied.
After saying this, he patted Lin Yun's shoulder to signal her not to overthink it. "Let's keep looking for the book."
Reluctantly, Lin Yun nodded and followed Chu Ping as they cautiously searched through the shelves. This time, she didn't separate from him. Perhaps due to Xu Ya's disappearance, their mood had grown heavier.
Not long after they began searching for the books, a faint calling sound made them stop in their tracks.
Lin Yun looked at Chu Ping in surprise, unable to believe what she had just heard. She glanced at him to confirm whether he had also heard it. Chu Ping clearly heard the sound as well; he gestured for silence and strained to listen to the faint call.
"Chu Ping? Lin Yun? Where are you?"
The voice was very weak, as if someone was desperately trying to keep their voice down, tinged with a hint of fear.
It wasn't an illusion; this voice belonged to Xu Ya, who had suddenly disappeared.
Chu Ping turned his head in confusion to look at Lin Yun, wondering: hadn't Lin Yun said that Xu Ya was gone? Why was her voice now echoing? Could it be that this voice was merely a figment of his imagination?
As this bizarre thought crossed his mind, he glanced at Lin Yun with an unnoticeable hint of fear in his eyes. However, when he saw her bewildered expression, he began to doubt whether his thoughts were too far-fetched.
At that moment, Lin Yun was also in shock; she clearly recognized that the voice belonged to Xu Ya, who had vanished right before her eyes. However, she didn't notice the change in Chu Ping's expression and turned toward him in confusion, seeking an explanation.
"Let's go take a look."
As the sound grew closer, Chu Ping could no longer contain his curiosity and suggested they investigate what was happening. Just as he was about to head over, his arm was grabbed by Lin Yun, who looked at him with concern.
"Don't," Lin Yun said softly.
"Why not?" Chu Ping asked, staring intently into Lin Yun's eyes.
"Don't you find it strange?"
Chu Ping paused for a moment at Lin Yun's words, but then he gently patted her hand and said, "It's fine. We should go see what's going on."
Seeing the determination in Chu Ping's expression, Lin Yun realized she couldn't stop him. Reluctantly, she followed behind him as they walked toward the source of the sound.
The two of them made their way through the library, with Chu Ping leading the way. He kept an eye on their surroundings while also glancing back at Lin Yun. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed something off about Lin Yun's expression; there was an unusual tension that he couldn't quite place. However, when he looked more closely, nothing seemed to have changed.
As the sound grew louder, they finally turned a corner, and Chu Ping spotted a familiar figure not far ahead in the hallway. It was Xu Ya, the person Lin Yun had mentioned had suddenly disappeared.
Upon seeing Xu Ya, Chu Ping signaled for Lin Yun to stop. They both crouched in the corner, watching as Xu Ya continued to call out their names.
After observing for a while, Chu Ping couldn't find anything unusual about Xu Ya. She appeared just as frightened and confused as any newcomer would be. Perhaps Chu Ping's earlier words had made an impact; despite her fear, Xu Ya was managing to keep her voice down and wasn't shouting loudly.
"Are you sure Xu Ya disappeared in the restroom?" Chu Ping asked quietly while keeping an eye on Xu Ya.
"I'm certain," Lin Yun replied firmly. "I called for her in the restroom for half a minute. If something had really happened to her, she wouldn't have been able to ignore me."
After staring at Xu Ya for a few seconds without noticing any flaws in her demeanor, Chu Ping finally said to Lin Yun, "Wait here; I'm going to check it out first. Don't move until I come back."
Lin Yun understood what Chu Ping intended to do and quickly grabbed his sleeve, shaking her head in protest.
"I have to do this," Chu Ping reassured her. "You want to know what's really going on too, right?"
Lin Yun wanted to shake her head and tell Chu Ping that as long as he was safe, she didn't really want to know. However, Chu Ping's attitude was straightforward; with a firm tug, he pulled Lin Yun's hand away and, after signaling her not to be discovered, walked around the corner alone.
The moment Chu Ping stepped out of the corner, the panicked Xu Ya spotted him. It was like finding a glimmer of light in the darkness, and she rushed toward him. Chu Ping quickly gestured for Xu Ya to stop.
Seeing Chu Ping's cautious movement, Xu Ya realized she had to halt her steps, coming to a stop just a few meters away from him.
"Where's Lin Yun? Why are you alone?" Chu Ping asked Xu Ya.
"I don't know," Xu Ya replied, her voice tinged with a hint of tears and fear.
"You don't know?" Chu Ping feigned surprise, doing well enough that Xu Ya didn't realize he was deceiving her. He continued with an agitated tone, "Wasn't Lin Yun with you? How could you not know where she is?"
"I really don't know! I didn't see Lin Yun after I went to the bathroom," Xu Ya explained quickly. "She told me to go alone while she waited outside. When I came out, I found she was gone. I was so scared that I ran out of the bathroom."
After hearing Xu Ya's words, Chu Ping felt confused. The accounts from both Lin Yun and Xu Ya had started off similarly; the only difference was that one claimed to have disappeared from inside the bathroom while the other said she vanished outside.
Chu Ping looked at Xu Ya standing a short distance away, caught in a dilemma. He didn't know whom to believe now.
