Horror Chapter
Meanwhile, in another library.
Chu Ping and Lin Yun were hiding in a corner on the second floor of the library, holding their breath and not daring to make a sound. The "tap, tap" of footsteps echoed nearby.
After waiting for what felt like an eternity, the piercing footsteps gradually faded away until they could no longer be heard. Both of them let out a sigh of relief.
Lin Yun turned to Chu Ping and asked, "What should we do now? We still haven't found the book, and our time is running out."
Chu Ping furrowed his brow deeply as he scanned the surrounding bookshelves. "The book must still be in this library. There's definitely a place we've overlooked."
"I know that, but we don't have much time left. We need to make a choice quickly, and Xu Ya is also missing."
Upon hearing that Xu Ya was missing, Chu Ping's expression grew even more serious as he questioned Lin Yun, "What exactly happened? How did Xu Ya disappear?"
Taking a deep breath, Lin Yun began to recount what had just transpired.
Not long ago, Xu Ya had suddenly complained of a stomach ache and needed to use the restroom. Lin Yun, seeing that Xu Ya was new and fearing something might happen to her alone, decided to accompany her while Chu Ping continued searching for the book in the library.
Once they entered the restroom, Lin Yun said to Xu Ya, "You go ahead; I'll keep watch outside. Remember, if you feel anything off at all, call for me immediately."
Xu Ya's fear intensified upon hearing Lin Yun's words. With a trembling voice, she replied, "Isn't it true that as long as I don't make any noise, nothing will happen?"
"That's true, but you can't be too careless," Lin Yun said as she glanced around. "Alright, enough talking. Just take care of it quickly; I'll be right outside. Don't be scared."
Xu Ya seemed unable to hold it any longer; she nodded and hurriedly found a stall to squat down in. Lin Yun cast a glance at the stall where Xu Ya had gone in and noticed that the door was not closed tightly but didn't think much of it as she continued to keep watch over their surroundings.
After waiting for a full minute, Lin Yun felt that the situation was taking too long and asked, "Is it ready yet?"
However, there was no response from the restroom. A sense of unease washed over Lin Yun as she hurried to the stall where Xu Ya was. She slowly pushed the door open, only to find the restroom completely empty—Xu Ya had vanished without a trace!
This discovery sent a chill down Lin Yun's spine. She glanced around and called out softly, "Xu Ya?"
Still, there was no reply. At that moment, Lin Yun realized that something might have happened to Xu Ya, but she was also puzzled. She had been right outside the door while Xu Ya was inside; if anything had gone wrong, she would have heard it. Even if a ghost had attacked Xu Ya, logic dictated that it would have come for her first since she was outside.
The more she thought about it, the more confused she became. She decided to leave the restroom and report this to Chu Ping. Just then, a faint sound came from the last stall.
Lin Yun's heart raced as she looked toward the source of the noise and called out softly again, "Xu Ya, is that you?"
If one were to judge by her voice alone, Lin Yun sounded like one of those foolish characters in horror movies. But fortunately, she was an experienced veteran when it came to supernatural events. Although women might be seen as more vulnerable than men in certain situations, at this moment, Lin Yun's composure was no less than that of any man.
She shouted Xu Ya's name toward the stall while quietly backing away toward the exit. She wasn't foolish enough to approach the stall from which the sound had come; her life was at stake.
Even though Xu Ya had disappeared in that restroom, Lin Yun felt no obligation to risk her life for someone she had only just met. Besides, she had already called out for Xu Ya; if it truly were her, Lin Yun believed there was no way Xu Ya wouldn't respond.
Given the current circumstances, it seemed likely that Xu Ya had fallen victim to some malevolent force. All Lin Yun could do now was return to Chu Ping and inform her of what had happened.
Just as Lin Yun was about a meter away from exiting, the restroom suddenly creaked ominously, followed by the door slowly swinging open.
Upon hearing that creak, Lin Yun felt a jolt of fear. She couldn't afford to linger and find out what might emerge from within; without thinking twice, she turned and dashed toward the exit. As she fled the restroom, she caught a glimpse of delicate hands appearing on the door of the stall that had made the noise. She quickened her pace and ran toward the library.
Fortunately, both she and Chu Ping were barefoot in the library and made little noise, so they didn't have to worry about attracting any unwanted attention from spirits lurking inside. As she sprinted toward Chu Ping's location, a troubling question echoed in her mind: Why had there been such a loud noise if nothing had happened? And why had Xu Ya suddenly disappeared?
If it was the ghost in the library, then previously she and Chu Ping had already verified that as long as they kept their voices down, they would generally not attract any spirits. So when Lin Yun saw Xu Ya disappear into the restroom, she was momentarily stunned.
Fortunately, it was Xu Ya who had vanished. Although it might seem selfish to think this way, Lin Yun felt a sense of relief. It was precisely because Xu Ya had disappeared that she realized there were still some issues with the escape route she and Chu Ping had speculated about earlier.
Just as she pondered these problems, a figure suddenly darted out from behind a bookshelf and grabbed her. Initially startled, Lin Yun tried to break free, but a familiar scent soon reassured her about the identity of the person who had unexpectedly appeared, and she stopped struggling.
The person who held Lin Yun pulled her into a corner of the bookshelf and whispered in her ear, "Don't speak; the ghost is coming."
It turned out that the one holding Lin Yun was Chu Ping, whose face was grave as he scanned their surroundings anxiously.
Hearing this, Lin Yun felt puzzled and thought to herself: Wasn't there supposed to be no loud noise yet? How could a ghost possibly come here?
Before she could ask Chu Ping how he knew this, a familiar yet terrifying sound of footsteps echoed through the second-floor library.
Upon hearing that sound, Lin Yun's heart jolted, and she looked at Chu Ping with disbelief in her eyes.
The footsteps grew closer and closer to them. The two remained frozen in the corner of the bookshelf, not daring to make a sound.
After what felt like an eternity, that terrifying sound finally faded away within the library.
