Back in the library where Chu Ping and the others were.
After Chu Ping told Xu Ya everything, Xu Ya looked at him with a face full of disbelief.
Once Chu Ping finished recounting the events, a hint of sadness appeared on his face, but he quickly masked it and looked at Xu Ya. "I've told you everything about the supernatural incident; now it's time to explain the mission related to this incident.
Originally, there were five people involved in this supernatural event, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, only Lin Yun and I are still alive. During the process of the Interdimensional Supernatural Incident, it was impossible for anyone else to join midway. However, from what you said, you were in the school library reading and only discovered us when you were leaving, right?"
Xu Ya nodded, indicating that Chu Ping was correct. Chu Ping paced around the narrow room and continued, "That's strange. Based on past experiences, there shouldn't be any mistakes; this is something many Escapers have deduced with their lives. Yet your appearance contradicts that! If we eliminate all impossibilities, then there's only one explanation left!"
At this point, Chu Ping's expression turned grim as he gritted his teeth and said each word slowly: "The rules have changed!"
Lin Yun, who had been silent until now, instinctively took a few steps back upon hearing Chu Ping's words, his voice trembling with fear. "How is that possible? Could it be that you're mistaken?"
"I wish I were wrong, but given Xu Ya's appearance, there's currently only this possibility!"
"Wait! What are you talking about? I don't understand anything!" Xu Ya expressed her confusion, completely lost in the conversation between Chu Ping and Lin Yun.
"It's okay if you don't understand; these matters are too complex for you right now."
Chu Ping shook his head, trying to calm his frantic emotions as he addressed the still bewildered Xu Ya. "Let's return to the beginning. The content of our supernatural incident involves finding a book titled 'Escape' in the library. However, we've searched for a long time without success. But while looking for the book, we discovered a way to evade the ghosts in the library!"
"What method?"
"Don't make any noise. Every loud sound will trigger an unpredictable response, and whenever a loud sound occurs, the Spirit begins to patrol the library. During that time, as long as we remain silent, the Spirit won't detect us. Conversely, if we make any noise, the Spirit will easily find you."
"Is it really that simple?" Xu Ya asked incredulously.
"Yes. The conditions for survival are often very simple; it's just that most people fail to notice them. If you don't realize it, there's a good chance you'll never figure out what survival looks like until you're dead."
"I have one more question!" Xu Ya interjected.
"What about this room? I don't remember there being such a room in the school library. And I recall you saying something about returning to a safe house at the beginning?"
"I don't really know how to explain this to you, but just from the name, you can guess that this place is called a Safe House. That means as long as you're inside, the spirits won't be able to find you. However, this house only appears during the Spirit's patrols. Once the time is up, we have to go back outside and start looking for that book."
"So how long can we stay inside?"
Xu Ya felt that things were not as simple as they seemed. After hearing Chu Ping's words, her already pale face turned even whiter.
"Half an hour! Each time the Safe House appears, it lasts for half an hour."
"That means—"
"The Safe House is about to disappear!"
Chu Ping looked at Xu Ya. "Because of your sudden appearance, I decided to bring you back to the Safe House and tell you some things. I was worried something might happen to you while you were completely unaware."
"Thank you," Xu Ya said quietly.
Hearing this, Chu Ping smiled. "It's nothing. Once you're in a supernatural event like this, we're all partners. I can't just stand by and watch you get killed."
"What should I do now?" Xu Ya asked.
"Just follow me and Lin Yun closely, try not to make any noise. It’s best if you take off your shoes. At the beginning, it was your footsteps that attracted the Spirit to the second floor so quickly."
"I'm sorry."
At that moment, Xu Ya realized how big of a mistake she had made at the start.
"Alright, enough small talk. Get ready to go out," Chu Ping gestured for Xu Ya not to apologize. As they approached the door, Chu Ping turned back to Xu Ya and said, "I guess you might still not fully believe what I told you earlier, but that's okay; you'll believe it soon enough."
Xu Ya remained silent after hearing Chu Ping's words. Deep down, she indeed had doubts about what Chu Ping had said to her.
Ignoring the silent Xu Ya beside her, Chu Ping nodded at Lin Yun and finally asked Xu Ya, "Are you ready?"
Upon hearing this, Xu Ya quickly took off her shoes and nodded to indicate she was ready.
Chu Ping took a deep breath, placed her hand on the doorknob, and slowly opened the door.
The wooden door was well-maintained, making no sound as it opened.
After pushing the door open, Chu Ping first tilted his head to listen carefully to the sounds outside. After a long while, he realized there was nothing unusual. He gestured for the other two to follow him.
The three of them tiptoed out of the safe house, passing by about a dozen bookshelves until they reached the last row of shelves in the second-floor library.
Chu Ping whispered to Xu Ya, "We've already checked the other shelves; this is the only row we haven't searched. The book should be here. Let's split up: I'll check the left shelf, Lin Yun will take the right, and you can look through this one. Just let me know when you find it."
"What should we do once we find the book?" Xu Ya asked quietly.
Hearing this, Chu Ping squinted at Xu Ya, making her feel extremely uncomfortable. After a few seconds, he shook his head and replied, "I don't know either, but I think once we find the book, we'll figure out how to get out."
Xu Ya felt a bit disappointed upon hearing that Chu Ping didn't have an answer, but she brushed it off. The three of them began searching the shelves as planned.
Chu Ping searched the left shelf for the book that represented a way out, but his peripheral vision remained fixed on Xu Ya, who was diligently looking for books in the middle.
Years of experience told him that Xu Ya's presence was not as simple as it seemed. However, from what he could see, she wasn't acting suspiciously. He had no choice but to suppress his thoughts and focus on finding books on the shelf, though his eyes kept darting back to Xu Ya's every move.
The library remained eerily quiet.
