Horror Chapter
Just as Jiang Liu was about to ask more questions, Zhang Lin pulled him into the Haunted Building.
"Don't think about that for now. They are all waiting inside. Let's go in first," Zhang Lin said as they walked.
Hearing this, Jiang Liu gave up on his curiosity and followed him into the Haunted Building.
As soon as they entered, Jiang Liu saw Liu Ming and Wang Xing staring at him. Liu Ming frowned when he noticed how late Jiang Liu had arrived. "What happened? Why were you outside for so long?"
"There was an incident outside. I felt an evil gaze, and for some reason, I experienced hallucinations. Luckily, Zhang Lin reminded me in time," Jiang Liu admitted without hiding anything from them.
"Hallucinations?" Liu Ming said, sounding puzzled. "I've felt the evil gaze before, but I didn't know about your hallucinations."
"What about Wang Xing?" Jiang Liu asked.
"I didn't experience anything either."
He glanced at Shuangshuang, who also hadn't gone through any hallucinations. Now, Jiang Liu was completely confused! Why was he the only one who could sense that hallucination, and why did it feel so real?
"Can you be more specific?" Liu Ming asked, eager to understand what Jiang Liu had experienced.
"It was like the whole world went dark, and there were just these enormous eyes watching me."
Jiang Liu struggled to convey the scene he had experienced while trapped in a hallucination.
After listening to Jiang Liu's description, Liu Ming's furrowed brow deepened even further. He couldn't understand why, among the five of them, only Jiang Liu could perceive the hallucination while the other four could only sense a gaze upon them.
"It might be because Jiang Liu joined us halfway!" Wang Xing speculated.
"That’s a possibility!" Liu Ming agreed with Wang Xing's theory. Seeing that the others were lost in thought, he added, "Let's set this aside for now. Our main priority is to get through tonight's mission! Jiang Liu, what are your thoughts?"
"Me?" Jiang Liu was surprised to be singled out by Liu Ming.
Since this was his first encounter with such a supernatural event, there were many things he didn't know. Even if he tried to guess, he could only think based on his previous experiences with the Alternate Dimension Incident, which might mislead the others.
Liu Ming had considered this as well but preferred to let newcomers think independently. Although Jiang Liu had previously encountered two supernatural events of the Otherworld type, Liu Ming remained skeptical about Jiang Liu's ability to make accurate deductions without firsthand experience.
"Let me summarize briefly. During lunch, I asked Zhang Lin if this Haunted Building had a basement. You didn’t, right?" Jiang Liu looked at Zhang Lin.
"Yes," Zhang Lin nodded, confirming that she had heard him ask that earlier.
"Then I have a question: since this Haunted Building doesn't have a basement, where could the extra Haunted Building be? Is it just an additional floor suddenly appearing on the seventh floor, or is it an extra layer inserted between two floors?"
"What you mean is that if the extra floor appears above the seventh floor, we would easily find it. But if it’s inserted between two existing floors, we wouldn't be able to determine which layer is the extra one. That would make it very difficult for us to locate it! Am I right?"
Zhang Lin quickly grasped the key point of Jiang Liu's question and offered her own speculation.
"Yes, you're absolutely right!"
"Then it's a bit troublesome. Do you have any ideas?" Wang Xing asked.
"I have a theory. If there's an extra floor in the Haunted Building, then 'it' might give me a hint! A hint about which floor is the extra one," Jiang Liu shared his speculation.
"What kind of hint do you think it would be?"
"I don't know!"
Jiang Liu shook his head. After an entire afternoon of thinking, this was all he could come up with. The information provided by 'it' was too sparse for him to derive anything more.
"Coming up with this much is already quite impressive! At least we won't be searching blindly!"
Liu Ming stepped forward at this moment to comfort everyone.
"So what do we do now?"
Shuangshuang asked softly, her voice trembling with fear. The moment she entered the Haunted Building, she felt a chill run down her spine, and an overwhelming sense of terror surged within her. Thankfully, Zhang Lin had been holding her hand; otherwise, she might not have had the courage to step inside at all.
Liu Ming thought for a moment and said, "Let's go to the top floor first and see if there's an extra layer above the seventh floor!"
The group exchanged glances. Although they all believed that finding the extra floor wouldn't be easy, it was still a method worth trying. They would only know for sure if they gave it a shot.
Having established the plan, everyone made their way upstairs. Just before reaching the door, Wang Xing suddenly slapped his forehead as if he had remembered something. He pulled out two flashlights from his pocket and handed them to Zhang Lin, only to realize that since Jiang Liu had joined midway, he had one less flashlight than needed. He sheepishly said, "I didn't expect an extra person, so I only prepared two flashlights."
Before Jiang Liu could wave his hand to indicate he didn't need one, Zhang Lin handed him the flashlight she was holding. "You can have mine. Shuangshuang and I can share one!"
Looking at Zhang Lin, Jiang Liu thought for a moment and decided not to be polite. He accepted the flashlight and thanked her.
This incident highlighted that although Jiang Liu had experienced two Interdimensional Supernatural Incidents, he was not as well-prepared for supernatural events as the seasoned veterans Liu Ming and Wang Xing.
During their conversation at noon, Zhang Lin had already mentioned that the Haunted Building lacked lighting. However, this afternoon, Jiang Liu had been so focused on the mission hints that he completely overlooked this detail, leading to the current situation.
From this point, any pride Jiang Liu had was quickly dispelled. He realized that being careless in the face of any supernatural event was a surefire way to invite disaster.
If it weren't for Wang Xing preparing the flashlights, once they were separated by ghosts in the Haunted Building, Jiang Liu would have been like a blind person in broad daylight!
Once everyone turned on their flashlights, they slowly made their way into the corridor.
As they climbed the stairs in the corridor, Zhang Lin seemed to think of something and turned to Jiang Liu beside her. "When we were discussing earlier, I sensed from your tone that you might have thought of something else?"
"Yes, there’s one more thing I haven't mentioned," Jiang Liu nodded, confirming that he indeed had another thought in mind.
Hearing their conversation, Liu Ming and Wang Xing, who were walking ahead, chimed in, "What else is there? Let’s hear it!"
"Actually, it's just my overthinking," Jiang Liu said as he shone his flashlight around the darkness. "Time! The time when the Haunted Building disappears! The previous mission indicated that our task would end once we entered an extra floor, but I thought of a problem!"
"Is it about how to get out of that extra floor?" Liu Ming asked.
"Yes, I don't think the mission is simply to walk into the floor! The greater danger might be after we find and enter that extra floor!"
"What about the time you mentioned earlier?" Zhang Lin inquired.
"That's just my personal guess. I'm wondering if there might be a time limit for that extra floor! Once we step inside, a countdown could start. Even if our mission is over, we still might not be able to leave that floor!"
"Are you worried that we might still be wandering inside before that extra floor disappears?"
"Exactly! Once that extra floor vanishes, we could end up trapped there forever!" Jiang Liu expressed his concern.
The others also considered Jiang Liu's worries, and the atmosphere grew heavy as everyone pondered the situation.
"The seventh floor has arrived!"
At that moment, Liu Ming and Wang Xing, who were leading the way, came to a halt.
They had reached the seventh floor of the Haunted Building!
