Horror Chapter
The words struck like a thunderclap, as if someone had taken a massive hammer and smashed it down on Zhang Lin and Shuangshuang's heads. For a moment, both were in shock, staring at Jiang Liu, unsure of how to express their feelings.
After several minutes, Zhang Lin finally regained her composure and tentatively asked, "Did you see us last night?"
"Yes, to be precise, I also saw your other companions!" Jiang Liu replied seriously.
"Then you—"
"This place is too crowded; let's find somewhere quieter to talk!"
Jiang Liu noticed that Zhang Lin was struggling to control the volume of her voice and quickly interrupted her, smiling at the two of them. "I know a place that's less crowded. Would you mind moving somewhere else to talk?"
"Of course!"
Suppressing her mixed feelings of excitement and fear, Zhang Lin agreed to Jiang Liu's suggestion.
She wanted to know who this classmate was that had suddenly greeted them and how he knew about the supernatural events. Was there anyone else at H University involved in this incident besides them?
As she walked beside Jiang Liu, Zhang Lin found herself puzzled by what this handsome young man was up to.
From what Jiang Liu had just said, he had seen them last night, which meant he had overheard their conversation in the hallway and outside the dormitory. However, since he hadn't stepped forward at that time, it indicated he didn't want to get involved in the supernatural incident. So why was he now coming forward to confess?
Following Jiang Liu to an inconspicuous corner of the playground, Zhang Lin noticed that only the three of them were present. It was only then that Jiang Liu stopped, turned around, and smiled at Zhang Lin, waiting for her questions.
"Who exactly are you?" Zhang Lin asked directly.
"My name is Jiang Liu. Like you, I am also a student admitted to H University this year."
"You know I'm not asking about that!"
Zhang Lin's expression was somewhat grim. He wanted to directly ask Jiang Liu if he knew about the supernatural events, but his long-standing caution held him back. He decided that unless Jiang Liu mentioned the supernatural incidents first, he wouldn't say a word! He was afraid that Jiang Liu might just be trying to scare him. What if he impulsively revealed something about the supernatural events and ended up putting others in danger?
At the same time, he tightened his grip on Shuangshuang's hand, signaling her to stay quiet.
Jiang Liu looked at the two of them, who seemed to have an expression of "you don't understand, so we won't talk," and finally spoke up. "I have also experienced supernatural events as an Escaper, but I may have gone through them more times than you."
"Really?" Zhang Lin asked impatiently. "Do you have any way to resolve the consequences of telling others about these supernatural events?"
As he spoke, both of their eyes were filled with a glimmer of hope as they looked at Jiang Liu. Although Wang Xing and Liu Ming had no such methods, they still held onto a sliver of hope without consulting anyone else.
"I'm sorry! I don't know any more about supernatural events than you do!"
Seeing Jiang Liu shake his head, the hope that had briefly risen in their hearts was dashed once again. Fortunately, after experiencing what happened last night, Zhang Lin's emotional resilience had improved significantly. After a momentary disappointment, he composed himself and asked again, "From what you said earlier, were you watching us last night?!"
Zhang Lin's question was quite clear; he didn't believe that Jiang Liu could have seen them last night without hiding somewhere and secretly observing their every move! He even suspected that the sinister gaze he felt in the Haunted Building last night might have come from this person named Jiang Liu.
"That can't be considered watching!"
Jiang Liu quickly waved his hands in denial. He couldn't admit to such a thing; it would leave a bad impression on the two of them. If it were just the first two nights, Jiang Liu might not have cared and would have admitted it outright since he didn't plan to join them in the supernatural event anyway. But now it was impossible! After all, that damned 'thing' had forced him to participate in this supernatural event!
"Last night, your voices in the hallway woke me up, so I heard you! You can't blame me for that! Your noise was too loud; I couldn't help but listen."
"Then what do you mean now? Since you didn't show up the previous nights, it indicates you're not part of this supernatural event. Why are you revealing your identity to us now?"
Zhang Lin was suspicious of Jiang Liu's motives for confessing his identity. He felt that there must be more to it; it couldn't be as simple as wanting to get acquainted like before!
Hearing Zhang Lin's question, Jiang Liu couldn't help but smile wryly and said angrily, "During lunch, I received a mission from 'it,' which forced me to participate in the upcoming tasks!"
Upon hearing this, Zhang Lin furrowed his brow and thought: Can people really be added midway into a supernatural event? Why hadn't Wang Xing and Liu Ming told him about this?
Zhang Lin pondered for a moment before asking Jiang Liu, "Oh? Then what is your mission? I want to see if it's true!"
Zhang Lin intended to pry into Jiang Liu's words, but to his surprise, Jiang Liu looked at him with a strange smile.
"You must be a rookie encountering supernatural events for the first time, right?"
"That's right!" Zhang Lin nodded, thinking to himself:
Since Jiang Liu was awakened by their conversation last night on the floor, it meant that he had overheard Zhang Lin and Shuangshuang's discussion. Naturally, he couldn't hide the fact that he was more experienced. This question could help him uncover tonight's mission objective while also subtly probing whether Jiang Liu had indeed been forced to participate in this supernatural event like he had. If Jiang Liu didn't reveal anything, it would indicate that he was lying!
The final point was that if Jiang Liu confidently shared tonight's mission objective with them, Zhang Lin could determine whether Jiang Liu belonged to the same experienced group as Liu Ming and Wang Xing.
Even if he were exposed, he wouldn't feel embarrassed; after all, he had nothing to lose.
"Since you're a rookie encountering supernatural events for the first time, it means you won't receive the mission details issued by 'it.' Yet here you are asking me to tell you the mission details so you can see if it's true?"
Jiang Liu found it somewhat amusing but felt a slight reduction in disdain towards this rookie. At least from Zhang Lin's questions, it was clear that Zhang Lin was a cunning person!
In supernatural events, having no fear and being clever was fine; what one should really fear was encountering teammates who were as clueless as pigs!
Zhang Lin, caught in his lie, showed no sign of embarrassment. He simply stared blankly at Jiang Liu, knowing that Jiang Liu would reveal tonight's mission objective!
Beside him, Shuangshuang looked at Jiang Liu in astonishment, unable to believe that she could glean Zhang Lin's general situation from just a few exchanges.
Jiang Liu didn't keep them in suspense and directly told them, "The mission I received is that there will be an additional floor appearing in the Haunted Building tonight. We just need to enter that floor to complete the mission."
Upon hearing Jiang Liu's words, Zhang Lin fell silent and pondered for a moment before looking up at Jiang Liu. "Is that all you’re telling us about tonight's mission?"
"That should be the case; at least I've only received tonight's mission objective!" Jiang Liu replied.
"What is your purpose?"
"I have no purpose!" Jiang Liu shook his head, indicating that he had no ulterior motives.
Zhang Lin frowned at Jiang Liu, clearly not believing his words.
Childhood memories told him that no one in this world helps others without expecting something in return! Jiang Liu claimed to have no purpose, but Zhang Lin understood that once his true intentions were revealed, it was likely to lead to rejection.
Seeing the disbelief on Zhang Lin's face, Jiang Liu felt a sense of helplessness. He hadn't expected that trying to be a good person would lead to suspicion. He could only explain to the two of them, "I truly have no purpose; it's just that you remind me of someone who saved my life in the past! Even if I don't have a motive now, you'll find out the mission objective tonight anyway. It would be better for me to do you a favor now."
Upon hearing Jiang Liu's explanation, Zhang Lin finally relaxed and extended his right hand in gratitude, saying, "Thank you for sharing this information with us. It may not mean much to you, but it gives me and Shuangshuang some time this afternoon to think about tonight's events!"
Jiang Liu accepted Zhang Lin's thanks, and they shook hands.
"By the way, what about those two elderly people involved in this mission? Are they also students at H University?"
Jiang Liu voiced his curiosity, hoping to learn more about the two elderly individuals from Zhang Lin.
"I don't know," Zhang Lin shook his head. "They didn't tell us anything about that."
A hint of disappointment washed over Jiang Liu. He really wanted to find those two elderly people and ask them about the real supernatural events. But then he thought that he would see them tonight anyway, so there was no need to rush.
After coming to terms with it, he fell silent. While Jiang Liu had no further questions, Zhang Lin had a whole bunch of inquiries he wanted to pose to Jiang Liu.
"I want to know some information about supernatural events; I don't know..."
"Sure thing! What do you want to know? But just so you know, my understanding of supernatural events is quite limited; there are some questions I might not have answers for!" Jiang Liu generously asked Zhang Lin what he wanted to learn.
"I want to know everything; anything related to supernatural events will do!" Zhang Lin replied earnestly.
"Alright, let me think about where to start. I'll begin by telling you about the types of supernatural events!"
"Are there different types of supernatural events?"
"Yes, that's right. They are generally divided into two categories."
Jiang Liu shared all the information he had previously received from Li Lin about supernatural events with Zhang Lin, and time quickly passed.
As the military training session began in the afternoon, the three of them parted ways. Before leaving, Jiang Liu said to Zhang Lin, "You don't need to think too much about what I've told you. Just focus on getting through tonight's supernatural event first."
"Got it, see you tonight!" Zhang Lin nodded in agreement.
Watching Jiang Liu's figure grow more distant, Shuangshuang, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke up. "Can we trust what he said?"
"I think we can. Even if he has other unknown motives, he needs us to stay alive. Since he needs us alive, it means he doesn't have to lie to us for now."
Zhang Lin was quite certain. As she watched Jiang Liu disappear from view, she silently vowed to herself: I absolutely will not die in this hell!
