Horror Chapter
As the night was about to end, it would only welcome the dawn.
The sun in September always rises early; it was barely 6 AM, and the sunlight was already piercing, causing pain to the eyes.
Jiang Liu was awakened by the blinding sunlight that slipped in through the window. His eyes couldn't open for a moment due to the brightness, so he had to shield them with his hand.
After a while, his eyes finally adjusted to the harsh light streaming in from outside.
He surveyed the dorm room and noticed that Wang Yang, who slept on the upper bunk above Lin Lang, was missing. Feeling a bit puzzled but not thinking too much of it, he grabbed his phone from the bedside and checked the time—already past 6 AM.
It was time to get up!
Straining a little, he stretched lazily and got out of bed. After washing up for nearly twenty minutes, he felt somewhat refreshed. The noise he made while showering must have been loud enough to wake Lin Brother, who was still lost in dreams. When Jiang Liu stepped out of the bathroom, he saw Lin Brother already awake, complaining to Jiang Liu:
"Jiang, it's only 6 AM! Why are you up so early? Got a girl looking for you?"
This guy never fails to mention girls!
Jiang Liu placed his toothbrush on the table and hadn’t even opened his mouth when he heard the sound of a door opening behind him. Turning around, he found that the dorm's leader and Wang Yang had returned.
The leader was wearing a black tank top, glistening with sweat. With muscles developed from training, he looked like a bodybuilder—very imposing! He must have just come back from a morning run. As for Wang Yang, he wore a white shirt and carried a bag made of white plastic while chatting cheerfully with the leader.
Seeing that both lazy guys in the dorm were awake, Wang Yang waved the plastic bag in his hand and said:
"Hey! You two woke up just in time; I bought breakfast for you! Hurry up and eat."
As soon as Lin Brother heard there was breakfast, he perked up immediately and lunged at Wang Yang without even putting on any clothes. However, Wang Yang deftly dodged him with a quick move.
"Brush your teeth before eating!"
Seeing that he couldn't snatch breakfast from the younger brother's hands, Lin Brother had no choice but to obediently head to the bathroom to brush his teeth.
Jiang Liu took the breakfast from the younger brother, opened it, and found the standard breakfast setup: soy milk and steamed buns.
Not bothering to be polite with the younger brother or the older brother, he picked up a bun and started eating. "What were you doing out so early, younger brother? Don't tell me you were getting breakfast for us! I know the older brother went for a morning run, but I can't believe you have that kind of hobby!"
The younger brother, Wang Yang, opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by the older brother, Wang Fei, who was taking off his clothes nearby. "He went to buy breakfast for his girlfriend! He’s not going to get us breakfast; you’re thinking too much!"
Jiang Liu took a sip of soy milk and swallowed a mouthful of bun. "No matter what the reason is, as long as he brings us breakfast, it's a good deed!"
Hearing Jiang Liu and Wang Fei tease him, Wang Yang gave them both the middle finger. "You can't even shut up while eating!"
At that moment, Lin Brother finished brushing his teeth and picked up his breakfast to eat.
In just a few minutes, Jiang Liu and Wang Fei had polished off their food. Checking the time, they realized it was almost time for military training roll call. After changing into their uniforms, they left the dormitory.
As they stepped out of the dormitory, Jiang Liu paused at the door, glancing at the wooden doors of other dorm rooms in the hallway. He recalled the conversations he had overheard last night and the footsteps that had echoed from this floor!
"Hey! Fourth! What are you thinking about? Standing there like an idiot!"
Lin Brother asked in confusion when he saw Jiang Liu lost in thought at the door.
"Nothing."
Snapping back to reality, Jiang Liu retracted his gaze and smiled as he beckoned Lin Brother to head downstairs.
The morning military training consisted of standing at attention or jogging a few laps. The instructors called it warming up.
At noon, Jiang Liu and Lin Brother sat at a table, enjoying their lunch and teasing each other.
"Third Brother, what are you looking around for? Are you trying to find Xu Zhaodi? Do you have a crush on her?" Jiang Liu laughed as he noticed Lin Brother constantly glancing at the crowd.
"Get lost! I'm trying to avoid her!"
Seeing that Xu Zhaodi was nowhere in sight among the crowd, Lin Brother visibly relaxed and said to Jiang Liu, "I can't handle that kind of Tomboy! If I dated her, I'd probably be controlled to death!"
"Come on, it can't be that exaggerated! I think Xu Zhaodi is not bad; aside from being a bit of a Tomboy, she's not as terrifying as you make her out to be," Jiang Liu disagreed with Lin Brother's assessment.
"Hey! Don't doubt me!" Lin Brother replied somewhat lewdly. "I'm an experienced player in the dating scene! I can tell what kind of girl and temperament just by looking!"
Jiang Liu scoffed at this. He didn't believe Lin Brother; after all, they had only known Xu Zhaodi for less than three days and barely exchanged a few words. How could he claim to understand her personality so well? That was just boasting.
Just as he was about to mock Lin Brother further, a sudden sharp pain shot through his eyes. He instinctively thought he had gotten some sauce in them and closed his eyes tightly, rubbing them vigorously. After a while, the burning sensation gradually faded.
When he opened his eyes, a line of blood-red characters suddenly appeared before him!
The letters were so red they seemed almost sinister, the color reminiscent of human blood. It sent chills down his spine.
[Mandatory Reality Supernatural Mission: Join forces with the other Escapers participating in this mission and complete all objectives set forth for this supernatural task to conclude the mission!
Third Task: Enter the Haunted Building that appears at 1 AM tonight, locate the additional floor, and enter it to complete this mission objective!
Note (1): As this Escaper is required to participate in the mandatory reality supernatural mission, refusal is not permitted!
Note (2): This mission is divided into seven parts, with one objective announced each night.]
"Residence (): Since the Escaper is participating in this reality paranormal mission for the third time, they only need to complete five objectives for the mission to end!"
After reading the content expressed in the blood-red text, the words slowly faded from view.
Startled by this bizarre scene, Jiang Liu couldn't even hold onto the chopsticks in his hand, which fell onto the dining table. At the same time, a wave of immense fear surged from his heart!
"Hey? Jiang Liu, what's wrong? Why are you suddenly rubbing your eyes? Are you crying?" Lin Brother asked with concern.
"Can’t you see it?"
Jiang Liu quickly snapped back to reality and replied, "It's nothing, maybe some chili got into my eyes!"
"Come on, that's careless! Are you okay now?"
"I'm fine now, much better!"
Hearing that Jiang Liu was alright, Lin Lang didn't think much of it and continued eating.
However, Jiang Liu's face turned somewhat pale as he looked at Lin Lang, who was devouring his food. "Hey, Third Brother, did you see anything just now?"
"What do you mean?" Lin Lang looked at Jiang Liu in confusion.
"Oh, it's nothing. I might have just been seeing things because of the spice."
Jiang Liu casually made up an excuse and stopped questioning Lin Lang. Since others couldn't see what he had seen, he felt relieved.
"It seems that only I could see that blood-red text! What a twisted sense of humor!"
"But why did I suddenly get dragged into this reality paranormal event? Could it be because I saw them last night? Damn it! If I had known, I wouldn't have eavesdropped!"
Jiang Liu felt a pang of frustration in his heart! But then he thought to himself.
"Wait a minute, if it really was because I saw them last night, why didn’t they force me to join back then? Why wait until now? Could it be for some other reason? Or did I trigger something?"
Unable to make sense of it, he decided to bury the matter in his heart. At that moment, he glanced at the half-eaten food in front of him and lost his appetite, casually pushing the food around before stopping altogether.
He looked around at the crowd and, just then, two familiar figures caught his eye!
He paused for a moment but quickly reacted. Seeing those two familiar figures walking out of the cafeteria without even bothering to clean their trays, he turned to Lin Brother and said, "I suddenly have something to take care of. I’m leaving! Can you help me clean up my tray?"
Lin Brother stared blankly at Jiang Liu as he hurriedly ran out of the cafeteria, muttering to himself, "What’s going on? He’s leaving just like that?"
Once outside the cafeteria, Jiang Liu searched through the crowd for a long time before finally spotting those familiar figures just a few dozen meters ahead. He quickly ran over.
"Hey! Wait up, classmates! Yes! It’s you!"
Hearing the voice behind them, the two figures in front stopped and turned around in confusion. The other students around them also halted their steps but soon lost interest when they realized they weren’t being called.
The two who were called stood still, looking curiously at Jiang Liu as he approached.
It turned out that the two figures Jiang Liu recognized were Zhang Lin and Shuangshuang, who had narrowly escaped danger during last night’s supernatural incident. Zhang Lin looked puzzled and asked Shuangshuang beside her.
"Shuangshuang, do you know this guy?"
Shuangshuang shook her head as she watched Jiang Liu running toward them and replied to Zhang Lin, "Nope! Could he be your relative?"
"Not at all; I don’t have any relatives at H University," Zhang Lin said firmly to Shuangshuang. "Whoever it is, just make sure not to mention what happened last night!"
Upon hearing this, Shuangshuang recalled their experiences from last night and her face turned pale! She nodded fearfully, indicating that she wouldn’t bring up what had happened.
"Hello! My name is Jiang Liu, and I am a freshman at H University!"
Jiang Liu ran up to the two and introduced himself first.
Zhang Lin shook hands with Jiang Liu warmly and politely introduced himself and Shuangshuang, "Hello, I'm Zhang Lin, and this is my girlfriend, Shuangshuang."
Jiang Liu shook hands with Shuangshuang as well. It was then that Zhang Lin asked, "So, Jiang, what brings you to us? Do we know each other?"
"Oh, it's nothing much. We don't know each other; I just saw you two and wanted to get acquainted and chat for a bit!" Jiang Liu explained with a smile.
"I see! I'm sorry, but I don't think we have much to talk about," Zhang Lin replied decisively. Ever since he realized he had become part of a supernatural event, he felt a sense of estrangement from the world. Coupled with the warnings from Liu Ming and Wang Xing last night, he was determined to avoid excessive interaction with others until he could escape that terrifying hell. This was for the best for everyone involved.
Jiang Liu looked at Zhang Lin with some admiration. He understood why Zhang Lin refused to engage with him; it was simply fear of inadvertently revealing details about the supernatural events and being dragged into that terrifying hell in the near future. It was better to sever ties with others right from the start.
Zhang Lin felt his message was clear enough and took Shuangshuang's hand, preparing to leave. Just as they turned to walk away, a voice from behind them made them stop in their tracks, like a thunderclap echoing in their minds.
"I saw you last night!"
