Horror Chapter
"Alright, let's not think too much. Since your rule this time is a trap, it means you already know the true way out of this supernatural event?"
Wang Xing understood Liu Ming well; he knew that Liu Ming would never say something like that without being certain.
"Yes, but I don't have a hundred percent confidence in my thoughts!" Liu Ming looked at Wang Xing. "You should know that no one can guarantee they will survive a supernatural event."
"Let's hear it first. Let me know if there's anything I've missed."
Wang Xing wasn't disappointed by Liu Ming's uncertainty. Perhaps deep down, he agreed with Liu Ming's statement that 'no one can guarantee they will survive a supernatural event!'
He just wanted Liu Ming to share his perspective while he listened for any additional insights.
At that moment, the habit they had developed over a long time together was evident; it was this very habit that had allowed them to survive multiple terrifying supernatural incidents!
"Do you remember when we first received the mission details?"
Liu Ming didn't directly explain to Wang Xing but instead asked him a question.
"If I remember correctly, it was 'Enter the Haunted Building that appears at midnight and find a corpse inside, then bring the corpse out of the Haunted Building to complete the mission!'"
"That's right, those were the details. Your memory hasn't faded."
Liu Ming praised Wang Xing, but Wang Xing shot him a glare. Did he really need Liu Ming to confirm whether his memory was intact? He gestured for Liu Ming to get on with it.
Clearing his throat, Liu Ming continued:
"In fact, the way out is hidden within the mission details you just mentioned; it's just been obscured by 'it'!"
"Is the term 'corpse' misleading? In fact, what we're looking for may not necessarily be a human corpse; it could also be the remains of other species, like animals?"
Wang Xing displayed a look of sudden realization as he spoke these words.
Upon seeing Wang Xing joking with Liu Ming, Zhang Lin understood that the two elderly men before them were not ghosts in disguise. He took Shuangshuang's hand and moved closer to them.
He was well aware that the key to whether he and Shuangshuang would survive this supernatural event lay in whether these two elderly men could find a way out for them. So he set aside his guard and approached them.
Liu Ming glanced at Zhang Lin and Shuangshuang, who were slowly moving closer, and unusually refrained from making sarcastic remarks. He simply cast a faint glance before continuing to speak to Wang Xing.
"Wrong!"
Liu Ming shook his head, dismissing Wang Xing's speculation.
Hearing Liu Ming deny his assumption, Wang Xing was taken aback. After reconsidering the mission details, he felt that his speculation made perfect sense; after all, the only misleading aspect of the mission was the term 'corpse.' Anyone hearing the word 'corpse' for the first time would instinctively think that tonight's supernatural event involved finding a human corpse in the Haunted Building.
If it's not a human corpse, could it be asking us to find a ghost's 'corpse'?
A ridiculous thought crossed Wang Xing's mind, but he quickly extinguished it.
Having survived so many supernatural events, he understood that entities like 'ghosts' do not exist in death! Let alone any corpses!
Whether it was the mysterious arts of those Taoist priests or the enlightened monks who sought to save all beings, when faced with supernatural occurrences and entities that defy explanation, their long-held beliefs shattered like fragile glass!
And whether these so-called 'ghosts' were akin to what ordinary people perceive as ghosts remained unknown to anyone!
The reason why those terrifying entities were referred to as 'ghosts' was...
It was simply because the elders before them had referred to those inexplicable terrifying entities as "ghosts."
No one knew why!
So now, the surviving Escapers also called these terrifying beings "ghosts."
There were no tragic romances between humans and ghosts, nor were there any romantic love stories!
Their very existence signified only
Death! Despair! Fear!
All the evils of the human world!
Before Wang Xing could delve deeper into his thoughts, Liu Ming provided him with an answer.
"The corpse must be that of a human! It wouldn't let us carry an animal's body or an alien's body out of the Haunted Building, so your speculation is utterly ridiculous."
Liu Ming didn't spare Wang Xing any dignity in front of the newcomers; he directly told him the reason while throwing in a few jabs.
Wang Xing, however, remained quite open-minded and didn't feel embarrassed. Perhaps he had experienced something similar before; he simply shrugged helplessly.
"You know I'm not suited for this kind of reasoning. Since you're wrong, then you're wrong. Just tell me directly where the trap is without any more riddles."
"Besides the corpse, there's another clue in the mission details that you haven't noticed!"
Liu Ming glanced out the window, seemingly lost in thought for a moment before turning his gaze back to Wang Xing. "Did you not realize that the word 'find' has different meanings?"
Wang Xing fell silent for a few seconds, staring at Liu Ming in shock. "Are you saying that our initial separation to search for the corpse was a mistake?"
"Yes!"
Liu Ming nodded and continued, "Don't you realize that the fact 'it' has us searching for a corpse in this Haunted Building that no one has seen and no one knows where it is, is itself a nonsensical situation? There are too many unexpected elements in the process of searching for the body! For instance, if the body is placed in a very obvious location, we would find it quickly; or if it is hidden in a place that none of us can easily notice, then if everyone overlooks it, wouldn't our mission tonight become a certain death mission?"
"I understand your point!" Wang Xing looked into Liu Ming's starkly contrasting eyes and proposed his own theory again. "If it is both unnoticeable and not destined to be a certain death mission, then the body must have been right under our noses all along. Only this explanation makes sense! But I have one question!"
"What question?"
"If the body has always been right under our noses, then why haven't we discovered it? Is it a ghostly illusion? Or does 'body' actually have different meanings?"
"The meaning of 'body' has always been singular! Don't overthink it," Liu Ming replied confidently. Watching their profound conversation, Zhang Lin felt somewhat lost. He didn't understand why Liu Ming, who clearly knew the answer to their predicament, was reluctant to reveal it and instead kept guiding Wang Xing to find the solution himself. He found Liu Ming's approach puzzling.
Perhaps it's just an old man's bad habit!
Zhang Lin thought to himself.
