Horror Chapter
It was just past one in the morning, and the dormitory building had long since turned off its lights, creating an eerily quiet atmosphere.
In Dormitory 01, Jiang Liu tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep, his mind still preoccupied with thoughts of Su Xue's sudden disappearance from this world.
"If what Li Lin said is true, that people who die in supernatural events are forgotten by this world, then it means that before last night, Su Xue had never encountered a supernatural event. And judging by her demeanor, she certainly didn't seem like someone who had experienced many such events. Therefore, there is only one possibility: after returning to the dormitory, Su Xue participated in a supernatural event sometime before dawn and died as a result. That's why when I asked Xu Zhaodi at noon today, everyone had already forgotten that someone named Su Xue ever existed!"
Jiang Liu suddenly recalled something he had read online: a person dies twice in their lifetime—once when they stop breathing and another time when they are forgotten by the world. For those chosen to participate in supernatural events, there was only one kind of death; once they died, they would be completely erased from this world without leaving a trace!
The thought made Jiang Liu feel a pang of sadness. It was one thing to struggle for survival in terrifying supernatural events; it was another to know that upon death, all traces of existence would vanish from this world! No wonder Li Lin wanted him to help set up a gravestone before he died. No one wished to be completely forgotten by the world. Who besides them, the Escapers, would remember that some people had once walked this earth?
As he pondered these thoughts, a light flashed outside the window.
Jiang Liu paused for a moment and thought to himself: At this hour, who could possibly be outside? Moreover, there were always patrols every night checking if any students were out. Who was bold enough to venture out with a flashlight, trying not to be noticed?
With that thought, Jiang Liu got out of bed and quietly approached the window to look down.
Bathed in moonlight, he could vaguely see two shadowy figures below shining flashlights around, seemingly engaged in some activity. He could faintly hear their conversation; although it was intermittent, he could grasp the gist of it.
"Wang Xing, why is this incident so strange? It's like you have to swap tasks!" asked one figure with a slender build.
The man named Wang Xing replied, "It is indeed strange, but you have to let me be; I can't offer much insight."
"I didn't expect you to have any enlightening suggestions," the slender figure suddenly swept the flashlight wildly toward the dormitory building, nearly illuminating Jiang Liu standing at the window. Startled, he quickly sidestepped and pressed himself against the wall.
“Liu Ming, what are you looking for? Stop shining that flashlight everywhere!” Wang Xing asked, puzzled. He couldn't understand why Liu Ming was suddenly pointing the flashlight at the dormitory building.
“Oh, nothing,” Liu Ming replied without paying much attention, continuing to stare at the dormitory.
“Hey! Did you discover something?” Wang Xing saw that Liu Ming wasn't answering him and was still focused on the building, so he asked nervously, thinking he might have noticed something unusual.
“I just felt like something was watching us from somewhere upstairs!” After searching for a while without finding anything wrong, Liu Ming had to retract the flashlight and said to Wang Xing, “It might just be my imagination!”
“Could it be those new people watching us?” Wang Xing asked.
“It's possible. After all, one of the newcomers died last night. They might be scared and are checking if we’re still gathering here,” Liu Ming nodded thoughtfully.
“To the newcomers upstairs! You have ten more minutes! If you don’t come down, we’re leaving without you! Don’t say we didn’t warn you—once the time is up and you haven’t reached the designated spot, something terrifying will happen!” Wang Xing suddenly shouted at the dormitory building, his voice loud enough for everyone in the building to hear.
【So loud! Don’t they fear being discovered?】
Jiang Liu turned back nervously to look at the three people sleeping in the dormitory, only to find that they were sleeping as soundly as if they were dead. Despite the loud noise, they remained completely still. Listening carefully to the other dormitories, he realized that everything was eerily quiet. He couldn’t help but exclaim softly, feeling it was strange; the noise had been so loud that even he thought it was excessive. It seemed to have spread throughout the entire Military Training Base, yet it hadn’t woken anyone else up, which was puzzling.
Before he could try waking up the others in his dormitory, chaotic footsteps echoed from the hallway.
“Zhang Lin, are we really going to keep following those two to our deaths?” a female voice suddenly came from the corridor.
Then another voice responded; it was a boy who must be Zhang Lin, his tone trembling: “This morning you should have asked around about that girl named Su Xue who died in the hallway last night! What did you find out? No one remembers her! Not even her roommates recall that she ever existed!”
"What if it's just a joke they're playing on us?"
"A joke? Don't be silly! Shuangshuang, how do you explain the building that suddenly appeared last night and the tragic state of Su Xue?" The boy named Zhang Lin spoke with some agitation. "Do you know? I went to that place this morning, and there was no sign of the building from last night! And when I told others about what happened, it seemed like they couldn't hear me at all. Even when I wrote it down and showed it to them, no one could understand! They all thought I was just rambling!"
Shuangshuang fell completely silent. She must have experienced something similar to what Zhang Lin did, and the result was likely the same; everyone looked at her as if she were crazy.
Zhang Lin's voice suddenly became firm as he gently said to Shuangshuang, "Trust me! We're not going to our deaths! I will always protect you!"
"But I'm scared," Shuangshuang's voice trembled with a hint of tears. She was terrified of that haunted place, especially after witnessing the girl's tragic death last night. Her mind nearly broke under the pressure, and with Bai not believing her words, she almost thought she was hallucinating. To her shock, those two boys who called themselves Escapers had appeared again tonight, shouting loudly at the dormitory building. Didn't they fear waking everyone else up?
"Hey, Shuangshuang, haven't you noticed? Everyone in this Military Training Base, except for us participants, is in a deep sleep that can't be disturbed," Zhang Lin said with a hint of despair in his voice. "Everything those two told us has come true! Those who die in supernatural events disappear from the memories of everyone else, including this bizarre situation where no one can wake up!"
"Then can't we just not go? Hiding here is just as good!" Shuangshuang made one last attempt to resist.
"Those two said that once you're chosen, there's no chance to back out!" Zhang Lin sighed deeply. "I know you don't want to die—at least not in such a painful way! But we don't understand these strange happenings at all right now, so we have to follow those two. If they really didn't want anything to do with us, they wouldn't still be waiting for us in front of the dormitory tonight. From another perspective, since they've chosen to wait downstairs for us, it means they need us to survive, and we need them to understand what's really going on! We need a chance to find out how we can escape this damned supernatural event!"
Shuangshuang was moved by Zhang Lin's words; if there was a chance to live, who would choose death? After a few seconds of silence between them, footsteps echoed again as they prepared to go downstairs. At the same time, Jiang Liu heard a door opening on their floor!
The crisp sound of footsteps passed by Jiang Liu's dorm room. Although he knew it was other students, he instinctively held his breath, trying not to let anyone notice that someone in Dorm 01 was still awake!
