Horror Chapter
Around 10 PM, Jiang Liu and his two companions stumbled back to their dormitory, slightly tipsy from drinking. They almost missed the curfew and were scolded by the gatekeeper for the smell of alcohol on them. Fortunately, the gatekeeper was kind-hearted and let them go after a few words.
Once back in the dorm, Wang Fei and Lin Brother collapsed onto their beds without even changing out of their clothes, falling asleep immediately. Jiang Liu managed to take off some of his clothes but didn’t bother to wash up before joining them in sleep.
They slept soundly until morning, only waking up when Wang Yang, the second in command of Dormitory 01, returned with breakfast.
“Hey! Get up quickly! If you don’t hurry, you’ll be late!”
Jiang Liu was the first to wake up, likely because he always had light sleep. The alcohol from last night was the only reason he had slept in this long. Next to wake was their leader, Wang Fei. As for Lin Brother, Jiang Liu and Wang Fei had already finished washing up by the time he lazily crawled out of bed, mumbling, “Boss, you’ve really made me suffer. Why can’t you be as stubborn as your sister?”
“Get to brushing your teeth! Why are you so chatty?” Wang Fei was very protective of his sister and couldn’t stand anyone speaking ill of her. He kicked Lin Brother lightly to remind him of the time.
Lin Brother barely opened his eyes a slit and saw that there were still twenty minutes until assembly time. He hurriedly got up and rushed to the bathroom to brush his teeth while Jiang Liu and Wang Fei ate breakfast and waited for him.
Time flew by, and soon it was lunchtime after the morning military training ended.
As they ate, Jiang Liu and Lin Brother chatted about last night’s drinking session with some girls.
“I’ve never met someone so stubborn in my life!” Lin Brother exclaimed angrily when recalling last night’s events.
“Come on now, Wang Fei’s sister isn’t someone who gets taken advantage of easily. If you wanted to drink with her, she’d just drag her brother out. I saw you two drinking like enemies last night!” Jiang Liu chuckled bitterly at the memory. It was one thing for Lin Brother and Wang Fei to compete in drinking; it was another when the girls saw no one else willing to drink with them and took turns pouring drinks for him until he nearly threw up. This led to all three of them stumbling back to the dorm.
“Hello! Fancy meeting you here again!”
Just as Lin Brother was about to complain, a familiar voice rang out from behind Jiang Liu. He turned around to see Xu Zhaodi, the tomboy he had lunch with yesterday. He quickly got up and sat next to Lin Brother with a smile, saying, “Please sit down, beautiful!”
“Hmm, not bad! You’re quite considerate—much better than your rude friend here!” Xu Zhaodi shot a glance at Lin Brother, who was sulking silently while eating.
"By the way, where's that girl, Su Xue, from your place?" Jiang Liu looked around but couldn't find the particularly shy girl from last night, and he asked in confusion.
"What do you mean, my Su Xue?" Xu Zhaodi looked at Jiang Liu with a puzzled expression, not knowing who he was talking about.
Upon hearing Xu Zhaodi's response, Jiang Liu was momentarily stunned. He quickly turned to Lin Brother beside him and noticed that he also had a confused look, not knowing who Su Xue was. He hurriedly said, "It's the Su Xue who ate with us yesterday! The one who was especially shy!"
Hearing this, Xu Zhaodi seemed bewildered and replied, "I was the only one who had dinner with you two yesterday! Besides, I don't even know anyone named Su Xue!"
"What? You don't remember Su Xue?"
Jiang Liu suddenly became a bit agitated, prompting Lin Brother to quickly hold him down and say, "Fourth, why are you so worked up?"
"Right! Third Brother, do you remember the Su Xue who had dinner with us yesterday? She's the one who's particularly shy! You said you wanted to pursue her!" Jiang Liu looked at Lin Brother as if he were a drowning person clutching at a lifeline.
"Fourth, listen to me!" Lin Brother looked into Jiang Liu's eyes and comforted him, "I don't remember anyone named Su Xue at all, let alone wanting to pursue her! And just like Xu Zhaodi said, it was just the three of us having lunch yesterday!"
"Impossible! This can't be happening!"
Jiang Liu felt like his brain wasn't functioning properly; he couldn't understand what was going on! He clearly remembered everything from last night and could still picture Su Xue in his mind! Yet now both of them claimed there was no such person as Su Xue! It was as if everything that happened yesterday was just his imagination! The existence of Su Xue seemed confined to his mind alone! At that moment, he suddenly recalled what Li Lin had said to him at Wildwood Hotel; he felt there might be some connection between these two situations!
"Jiang Liu, are you okay?" Xu Zhaodi asked with concern. "Did you not sleep well last night?"
"Pretty much. We had a bit to drink last night; he might still be hungover," Lin Brother explained for Jiang Liu.
"You guys are something else. Skipping Military Training just to go out drinking—aren't you afraid of getting caught?"
"We had no choice; our dorm leader invited us, so we had to go."
At that moment, Jiang Liu was completely immersed in astonishment, staring blankly at the dining table before him, his mind still grappling with what had just happened.
"Su Xue! There must be such a person! I trust my memory! Everything that happened yesterday felt so real; it can't be just my illusion! But Lin Brother wouldn't lie to me. So how can I explain why everyone except me can't remember Su Xue? Could it be...?"
A sudden flash of insight crossed Jiang Liu's mind, but immediately, this thought sent a chill down his spine. He wanted to refute this idea, yet after considering it from every angle, it was the only explanation that made sense for why everyone seemed to have forgotten Su Xue's existence.
He recalled what Li Lin had said to him in the Wildwood Hotel: "In real-world supernatural events, no matter how big the incident is, there will always be a mysterious force that erases the impact of the entire event from people's minds."
At the time, he hadn't really believed Li Lin's words. Admitting it would mean acknowledging that his own memories could also have been altered by this mysterious force. He even doubted whether his past experiences were real. Moreover, some later events had caused Jiang Liu to dismiss these thoughts entirely.
However, today’s conversation with Lin Brother and Xu Zhaodi made Jiang Liu think of a question he had been avoiding. Before school started, he had wandered around H City for several days trying to verify Li Lin's claims but found nothing.
"If Li Lin wasn't lying to me at the hotel, then it means there really are supernatural events happening in this world! But why couldn't I find any information about it during my search? Is there truly an invisible, mysterious force affecting people's memories? Even their thoughts?"
A string of questions swirled in Jiang Liu's mind without answers. The thought of Su Xue—this cute and shy girl—silently dying in a supernatural incident while everyone forgot her existence made him shudder. She had truly vanished from this world!
He remembered why Li Lin had asked him to help erect two memorial stones; it was to leave a final trace in this world, not wanting to be completely forgotten.
The entire afternoon of military training passed in a blur for Jiang Liu. He was lost in a chaotic whirlwind of thoughts and barely knew how he got through it, with jumbled ideas flooding his mind.
