Horror Chapter
The powerful memory did not bring about a change in life; instead, it became the source of his torment during this time!
In the recent days at Wildwood Hotel, Jiang Liu could hardly sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, everything that had happened in the hotel replayed in his mind like a movie: Xu Qian's corpse, Li Lin's desperate plea for death, and the daily interactions among them were all vividly etched in his memory.
The more he recalled the terrifying events of the past, the more alien the real world felt. So, in the last few days before school started, he asked Aunt Nianxia for his wages from working during this time. Without bidding farewell to Nianxia, he left alone, wandering like a solitary traveler through the vast corners of H City.
He remembered Li Lin mentioning that certain supernatural events occurred in the real world. However, after searching for a while, he found no haunted places. The rumors he occasionally heard about certain locations turned out to be baseless; after personally investigating, he found no signs of ghosts or anything similar.
It seemed as if everything Li Lin had told him was a lie. He began to doubt whether what he had experienced was merely a figment of his imagination due to some mental issue.
As he continued his search for evidence, H University was about to start its semester. He had no choice but to suppress the questions that had arisen during this time and prepare to embrace his university life.
That morning, Jiang Liu stood at the entrance of H University with his admission notice in hand, watching the crowd of people coming and going. He felt as if he could no longer integrate into this throng; an invisible membrane separated him from these individuals, creating an insurmountable distance that felt clearer than ever before.
"Hello there! Are you here to report to H University?"
Just as Jiang Liu was lost in thought, a handsome and cheerful-looking boy approached him with a friendly greeting.
"Uh? Yes, I'm here to report."
"Oh, I see! Which department are you in? I can take you there." The Sunshine Senior's friendly demeanor eased Jiang Liu's rising sense of loneliness.
"Thank you so much for your help!" Jiang Liu politely expressed his gratitude to the Sunshine Senior.
"No problem at all; it's just a small favor," the Sunshine Senior waved his hand dismissively. "Besides, as your senior, it's my duty to help out. Let's go; you need to report quickly so you have time to settle into your dorm."
"Okay."
Jiang Liu had very little luggage. For someone like him who preferred simplicity, aside from some essential clothing, he hadn't brought anything else. He planned to buy what he needed after being assigned a dormitory. With the enthusiastic help of the Sunshine Senior, Jiang Liu quickly got everything sorted out and was finally led to the front of his assigned dormitory building.
"I won't go up with you; I need to help other newcomers reporting today," said the Sunshine Senior as he dropped Jiang Liu off downstairs.
"Alright then; I won't keep you. Let me treat you to a meal sometime!" After expressing his gratitude and exchanging phone numbers with the Sunshine Senior, Jiang Liu picked up his luggage and headed toward the dormitory where he would be living for the next four years.
Dormitory 0, the one assigned to Jiang Liu. Upon opening the door, he found the room empty and casually chose a lower bunk to place his luggage.
“Ding ding ding, ding ding ding.”
His phone suddenly rang. Jiang Liu took it out and saw that it was Nianxia calling. After a moment of hesitation, he answered.
“Hello! Is this Jiang Liu? Where have you been? Do you know that leaving without a word is very impolite?”
As soon as the phone was at his ear, he heard Nianxia's angry voice. Strangely enough, upon hearing her voice, Jiang Liu felt a flicker of life in his previously deadened heart; it turned out there was someone who cared about him in this unfamiliar city.
“I’m sorry. I’ve been feeling a bit down lately and wanted some time alone, so I didn’t tell you,” Jiang Liu explained apologetically.
“If you're feeling down, talk to me! I can help you! Have you forgotten that your health isn’t great? What if something happens while you’re running around?”
On the other end of the line, Nianxia’s anger didn’t subside with Jiang Liu’s explanation. In her worldview, anyone who didn’t take care of their health was unforgivable! Jiang Liu could hear the concern in her tone, but he didn’t think too much of it. He understood that her current concern was merely a doctor’s persistent worry for a patient. During these days of absence, he had come to realize some things and understood what kind of situation he was currently in.
“I remember telling you before that my health isn’t bad. The last incident was just an accident. Look, nothing has happened in the past two months, right?”
“I don’t care! Do whatever you want; it’s your body!” With that, she hung up.
Looking at the call ended screen, Jiang Liu let out a bitter smile. Before he could even put his phone down, Nianxia called again.
“What’s wrong? I admit that disappearing without notice was my fault. I promise I won’t do it again; please don’t be mad.” As soon as the call connected, Jiang Liu decisively chose to apologize.
“Good to know!” Hearing Jiang Liu’s apology softened Nianxia’s tone considerably. She said to him, “Isn’t today the day for new students to report? I was worried you wouldn’t find the reporting place, so I waited for you at the entrance. Why are you so late? I still haven’t seen you!”
Jiang Liu glanced at the time on his phone and asked, “What time did you get to the entrance?”
“Well… I’m not quite sure. Anyway, I’ve been waiting for quite a while. Enough about that; why aren’t you here yet? Do you not want to report anymore?”
Not wanting to expose the flaw in Nianxia’s words, he cautiously replied, “Actually, I’ve already reported and am now in the dormitory.”
After a few seconds of silence on the phone, the familiar sound of the call disconnecting echoed in Jiang Liu's ears.
With a helpless shake of his head, he shoved his phone back into his pocket and began to tidy up his bed. Just then, the door swung open, and a voice rang out.
"Hey! You got here so early, bro! I thought I was going to be the first one here, and now I've just wasted my excitement."
Jiang Liu turned around to see a young man dressed in a black shirt and blue jeans, sporting a short haircut. Realizing this was going to be his roommate for the next four years, he smiled and replied, "I just got here too. Look, I haven't even made my bed yet."
"I'm just like you! Nice to meet you, I'm Lin Brother, 18 years old," the young man introduced himself first.
"Hello, I'm Jiang Liu, also 18 this year."
"Wow! What a coincidence! I was born in July; when's your birthday?"
"Oh, I'm earlier than you—January."
"That's great! From now on, just call me Lin Ge!" Lin Brother said with an easy familiarity as he patted Jiang Liu on the shoulder and pulled him into a friendly embrace. "Let's finish tidying up later. Once the other two guys get here, we can all go out for a meal together and bond. After all, we're going to be brothers for the next four years."
Seeing Lin Brother's enthusiastic demeanor, Jiang Liu couldn't bring himself to refuse. A flicker of anticipation for his upcoming college life began to grow within him, even as he temporarily set aside the doubts that had been troubling him for days. He joined Lin Brother in conversation.
