Horror Chapter
"Why does the Fat Man appear as a ghost? Didn't they die at the hands of a ghost? Or do those killed by ghosts turn into ghosts themselves?" Jiang Liu's face turned pale.
"I can't answer the first two questions, but I can tell you with certainty that you're overthinking it! If everyone killed by a ghost became a ghost, this world would be swarming with them!" Li Lin patted Jiang Liu on the shoulder and took a deep breath. "I think our current issue isn't about these questions but rather finding another way out quickly!"
He pointed to the tightly shut door of Room 104. "We don't know when the ghost will come out, so we can't afford to waste time. The most important thing now is to find a way to survive and end this supernatural incident as soon as possible!"
[Why is he handing such an important task to me? An old man would be far more useful in this situation than a newcomer like me. He’s right; we have no idea when the ghost will act. Our main priority is still finding a way out! But the last escape route was deduced from someone's death; how could we possibly find another one so quickly?]
[Way out! Way out! Way out! That's it! Ever since we entered this hotel, we've been searching for anything strange. Besides the mirrors, there's one thing that has constantly appeared in our sight, whether it's morning, during meals, or at night—this thing has been persistently present!]
With that thought, Jiang Liu shifted his gaze toward what seemed ordinary yet was filled with strangeness.
The Clock! The Black Clock!
This was the clock that had been constantly in view since everyone entered the hotel.
At first, Jiang Liu had doubted this conspicuous and jarring object. However, as time passed, he realized that aside from its odd position and style, there was nothing particularly strange about the Black Clock; it was just like any ordinary clock. Moreover, after seeing it repeatedly, Jiang Liu had grown accustomed to it and no longer paid attention.
Even when he saw it stop moving in the mirror, he merely took it as a hint and never considered it might be a way out!
Now, with their only escape route destroyed by the White-Collar Man and everyone plunged into despair, Jiang Liu finally recalled this object that had long since become a habit for them all.
Li Lin noticed something unusual about Jiang Liu and followed his gaze to see the large Black Clock before him.
Confusion, surprise, bewilderment, and admiration! In just a few seconds, Li Lin's face displayed these four expressions in rapid succession.
Confusion arose from his lack of understanding as to why Jiang Liu was staring at the Black Clock; surprise came from realizing that both he and Jiang Liu had come to the same conclusion—that the Black Clock might signify another path to survival. Bewilderment stemmed from his inability to decipher what the Black Clock was hinting at; as for admiration, it was directed at Jiang Liu's remarkable quick thinking.
At a time when even Li Lin felt hope was fading, Jiang Liu remained unaffected by the atmosphere of despair and was able to swiftly identify clues pointing to another way out. What a prodigy! At that moment, Li Lin reassessed Jiang Liu, believing that in the days to come, Jiang Liu would undoubtedly rise to be among the elite at the pinnacle of society, capable of going further than others and gaining a deeper understanding of the true nature of the world.
"What are you thinking?" Li Lin turned to Jiang Liu, hoping to glean some useful insights from him.
"Just what you’re thinking!" Looking at the Black Clock, Jiang Liu recalled the scene where Fat Man killed White-Collar Man. He felt that events were trying to convey something important. His previous terrifying experiences had taught him that seemingly overlooked details often held crucial clues for piecing together the entire situation.
The stillness of the Clock, frozen time, and the neglected mirrored room—these three easily overlooked aspects were vital hints for uncovering the initial path to survival.
"What are you thinking?" Seeing Jiang Liu lost in thought, Xu Qian grew anxious. Time was not on their side; they had no idea when the ghost might appear. With both boys silent, she felt death could descend upon them at any moment.
"I’m wondering why the ghost disguised itself as Liu the Great to kill Jin Wanquan. It seems unnecessary, especially since Li Jing's body was found in Jin Wanquan's arms," Jiang Liu expressed his doubts.
"Weren't you told not to think about unnecessary things?" Xu Qian's words were cut off by Li Lin, who looked intently into Jiang Liu's eyes and asked seriously.
"Was the body in Jin Wanquan's arms Li Jing?"
"Yes!" Jiang Liu nodded affirmatively. "From the style of clothing, it was definitely Li Jing's outfit. That's why I find it strange—why would the ghost go through such lengths? Not only did it disguise itself as Liu the Great, but it also placed Li Jing's body in Jin Wanquan's arms."
"Wait! If you’re not mistaken, then the three people who died earlier, plus the four of us, make a total of seven people appearing!" Li Lin exclaimed, as if someone had opened up his mind's pathways, thoughts pouring out like a dam bursting.
"It couldn't have done anything unnecessary before; what seems redundant is actually a hint! Since it gathered us seven again at the dead end, it means another path to survival lies within us seven! But aside from Xu Qian and me knowing each other, the five of you are meeting for the first time."
"No, you're thinking about it all wrong!" Jiang Liu countered Li Lin's speculation and shared his own thoughts. "The path to survival shouldn’t be among us seven. I believe the hint appeared only after we entered the hotel, meaning it’s something we all share in common after checking into the hotel!"
"The Clock!" Li Lin and Jiang Liu said simultaneously, looking at each other.
"Yes! Exactly! Each of our rooms is decorated quite similarly, but to be precise, as long as the positions of the Clock and the mirror are identical. However, that brings us back to square one! We already knew that the Clock was the next hint for survival; this discovery is of no use to us right now!" Li Lin expressed his frustration, feeling that their deductions had fallen into a deadlock.
"No, I think this is another hint!" A confident glint appeared in Jiang Liu's eyes as he pointed to the Black Clock in the hotel lobby. "Didn’t you notice that the position of the Clock in our rooms is slightly different from that in the lobby? We can't even touch the Clock in the lobby! But in our rooms, we can easily reach it if we just find a chair to stand on!"
"Let’s go back to our rooms!" Li Lin said decisively. After agreeing with Jiang Liu's theory, he called everyone to return to their rooms.
Time slowly passed, and the door to Room 104 began to open slowly.
