Horror Chapter
In the darkness, the most dangerous thing is often not the terrifying ghosts or the man-eating monsters, but rather the fear of the unknown that arises within humanity itself. Because you never know what might happen in the next moment in the dark!
Will you touch something strange? Or perhaps there is a ghost floating right in front of you, watching you intently from the shadows, only you cannot see it? Or maybe you have unknowingly wandered into some horrifying place?
All of this is unknowable!
Imagination has played a significant role in human development throughout history, but sometimes an overly vivid imagination can be a curse. Just like at this moment, in the pitch-black darkness, Jiang Liu could hardly control his imagination, his mind filled with terrifying scenes.
At that moment, he felt like a blind person, groping his way forward in the dark. Coupled with the bloody scene he had just witnessed, it lingered in his mind, making him feel as if something was lurking around him.
In such darkness, time seemed to have vanished; he had no idea how long he had been here.
A few minutes? Ten minutes? Or even an hour?
He felt like he was going insane, moving forward based on the impressions in his mind, yet he hadn’t encountered any walls. Still, everything remained pitch black; there was not a glimmer of light.
If this continued, before the ghost arrived, he would scare himself to death with his own imagination!
Jiang Liu realized that this situation was unsustainable. Just as he was pondering how to find a source of light, a scene flashed in his mind—Bai and Li Lin smoking together. He remembered that after Bai finished smoking, he had casually pocketed Li Lin's lighter. He quickly reached into his pocket and indeed pulled out a hard object; judging by the texture in his hand, it must be the lighter.
This discovery brought him great joy. In such a dark environment, light has an immense psychological effect on people. Even if he saw some horrifying scenes while lighting the lighter, it would be better than being blind in darkness.
He struck it several times but found that no light appeared; not even a spark from the flint!
“Hmm? Could it be that the lighter is broken?”
Jiang Liu cursed under his breath, "Damn lighter, of all times to break down!"
He shook it a few more times and tried again. To his disappointment, there was still no light, not even a spark. Furious, he slammed the lighter onto the ground.
"Bang!"
Just as he threw the lighter away, a loud noise erupted nearby. Startled, he jumped up, ready to curse at whoever was making the racket when suddenly a chilling thought struck him, sending a shiver down his spine.
The sound that had just echoed beside him felt eerily familiar—familiar to every smoker out there.
Jiang Liu enjoyed smoking; whenever he felt down or overwhelmed with stress, he would light up a few cigarettes and smash the lighter to bits in frustration. It was precisely because of this habit that when he heard that sound moments ago, he instantly recognized what had caused it.
Indeed! It was the sound of a lighter exploding!
Every smoker knew that a lighter without gas could never produce such a violent noise. Since that lighter had made such a loud bang, it meant there was still gas inside. The flint was also fine; just earlier, he had shared a smoke with Li Lin, so it couldn't have broken down right when he needed it.
So the question arose: if the flint was fine and there was enough gas in the lighter, why hadn't he seen any flames or even a flicker of spark earlier?
After pondering for a long time, a terrifying answer emerged in Jiang Liu's mind.
At that moment, he looked into the darkness before him and realized that this darkness felt different from any night he had experienced before. It wasn't as heavy; it seemed almost uniform.
He had never been blind, so he didn't know what color darkness appeared to those who were. But this darkness felt peculiar to him; it was as if something obscured his vision. It reminded him of looking through thin gauze at the world, as if something were blocking his sight. He felt like if he waved his hand, he could disperse this strange darkness.
He reached out to touch what lay before him but found nothing covering his eyes. It was ironic that after smashing the lighter in anger, he couldn't verify the unsettling thought that had crossed his mind.
Just then, a series of loud banging sounds echoed from not far ahead, accompanied by some chaotic voices.
Jiang Liu was startled, and just as he was about to step back, he heard Li Lin's urgent voice.
"Hey! Li Jing, are you still in there? If you're alive, make a sound!"
"Quick, Li Lin, get out of the way and get ready to break down the door!" Xu Qian's voice followed.
Hearing his companions' voices, Jiang Liu immediately felt a surge of excitement! He wasn't dead; he had survived that terrifying scene. Although he didn't understand why the ghost had spared him and not killed him, it didn't matter. He felt a renewed sense of joy and shouted, "Hey, everyone, I'm in here! Hurry up and save me!"
Since the darkness before him had not yet lifted, Jiang Liu dared not move recklessly. He could only stand in place and shout loudly, hoping that Li Lin and the others would break down the door and find him.
Outside the door, when Li Lin and the others heard Jiang Liu's voice coming from Student Sister's room, they were momentarily stunned but quickly reacted. They shouted into the room, "Stay where you are! We'll be there to save you soon! Xu Qian, you two girls step aside; Jin Wanquan, let's kick down the door together!"
Then they heard the sound of kicking against the door. After about five or six kicks, they finally heard the door burst open.
As Li Lin and the others rushed into the room, Jiang Liu, who had been waiting for their rescue, suddenly felt as if someone had pushed him from behind. He stumbled forward a few steps. When he steadied himself and turned around to look back, he was astonished to find that he could see again! The eerie darkness had vanished without him noticing.
Before him stood the Giant Mirror embedded in the wall!
The mirror, once covered in blood, now showed no trace of it; it was clean enough for him to see every detail on his body. The bloody head that had hung in mid-air had also disappeared. Looking behind him, he noticed that the scattered limbs on the floor were gone as well. It was as if everything had just been a dream.
