Horror Chapter
Li Lin walked into Student Sister's room and saw Jiang Liu staring at the Giant Mirror covered by the bed.
He approached and asked, "What's wrong? Did you find something?"
Jiang Liu looked at the mirror obscured by the bed and felt a flicker of doubt in his mind. However, he chose not to share this with Li Lin and changed the subject. "No, but did Li Jing mention where she felt the gaze?"
"Not really, but she was definitely in the bathroom when she was washing her hair."
Li Lin sensed that Jiang Liu was hiding something from him. However, after a moment of thought, he figured that Jiang Liu might not be entirely sure himself, so he decided not to press further, to avoid leading him down a wrong path.
The two of them arrived at the bathroom where Student Sister had washed her hair and noticed that the faucet was still running. Jiang Liu reached out to turn it off and surveyed the bathroom before asking Li Lin, "Do you think this could be Student Sister's illusion?"
"Hard to say." Li Lin also felt uncertain as he looked at the makeup mirror on the sink. "But we can assume that Student Sister isn't lying; perhaps a ghost really is fixated on her! Why do you think she felt that malevolent gaze while washing her hair?"
"Are you suggesting it’s the mirror?" Jiang Liu turned to see Li Lin gazing into it.
"That's very possible. If what you said last night is true—that the only way for the ghost to enter our room is through the mirror—then while Student Sister was washing her hair, the ghost could have been watching her from the other side of the mirror! That’s why she felt that malevolent gaze in the room!"
Jiang Liu nodded, finding some logic in Li Lin's reasoning, but he still questioned, "Do you really think breaking the mirror is our way out?"
"I'm not sure, but I have a gut feeling." Li Lin reached out to touch the mirror. "My intuition tells me this isn't a way out; it might actually trigger a dead end in this supernatural event!"
"Oh!" Jiang Liu was surprised. He had always thought that Li Lin believed breaking the mirror would lead to their escape, but now he realized they shared similar thoughts.
"You're really not going to come out if I ask you to make a choice, huh? That's just my intuition," Li Lin said with a bitter smile.
"Heh, actually, I think the same way. Breaking the mirror could very well push us into an unknown situation," Jiang Liu pointed outside the room. "But those newcomers out there might not think so, especially Li Jing. Once she calms down, she'll probably start believing that there's a ghost peering at her through the mirror, and that breaking it will end this supernatural incident."
Li Lin sighed. "That's why I hate working with newcomers, except for you! Your performance is better than some veterans!"
Jiang Liu caught another meaning in Li Lin's words and asked, "From your tone, does that mean supernatural incidents can be collaborative?"
"Of course!" Li Lin smiled as he looked into Jiang Liu's eyes. "None of this is secretive; it's fine to tell you now. Consider it a favor for you. When the next opportunity arises, I hope we can continue working together."
"Thank you."
"I remember discussing this with you before. Supernatural incidents fall into two categories. One is the life-threatening supernatural incidents we're experiencing now, which we collectively refer to as 'otherworldly missions.' These are tasks that aren't issued in reality. Generally, a few people are forcibly selected to come to our current Edge World and complete the supernatural incidents it presents. These missions are usually sudden and occur without any preparation, which is why the mortality rate for these tasks is extremely high. Those who survive such missions are typically among the elite in our group," Li Lin explained to Jiang Liu.
After hearing Li Lin's explanation, Jiang Liu understood why Li Lin and Xu Qian had shown some enthusiasm when they realized he had already experienced such supernatural incidents. He had thought they had other intentions toward him; it turned out he was overthinking.
"What about the other type?" Jiang Liu asked.
"The other type of supernatural incident is relatively simpler, with a lower survival rate, and several people can collaborate on it," Li Lin said, his tone slightly off, giving Jiang Liu a sense of helplessness.
Li Lin continued, "However, this type of mission is also the most despairing! These missions occur in the real world—like those haunting events you've seen online or ghosts killing people; they all belong to this category."
"Occurring in the real world!" Jiang Liu was taken aback by Li Lin's words, momentarily speechless.
"Yes, it happens in the real world! And there are no restrictions!" Li Lin said with a bitter smile. "No restrictions means that once we enter a supernatural event, ghosts could kill us at any moment!"
"But if that's the case, the mortality rate should be extremely high!" Jiang Liu said, puzzled. Logically, without the suppression of ghosts, their methods of killing could vary greatly, and even deploying the entire national army might not eliminate these unknown entities.
"Oh, you've misunderstood," Li Lin realized from Jiang Liu's surprised expression that he hadn't explained himself clearly. He continued, "What I mean by lifting the suppression is that there are no so-called rules for killing; ghosts can kill for no reason at all!"
"What do you mean?" Jiang Liu still didn't understand.
Li Lin elaborated, "Let me give you an example. Suppose there's a haunted room that issues a task to me in the real world to resolve this haunting within a certain time frame. I can go in alone or bring a few companions with me. As long as we haven't entered the haunted room, there's no danger at all; the only risk might be the time limit imposed! Once we enter the haunted room, that's when the ghost will attack us. But remember, it will never issue us a mission that guarantees our death. In supernatural events in the real world, there is something that can eliminate ghosts."
"Ghosts can be eliminated?" Jiang Liu was completely shocked by this news; he never expected that such unknown entities could actually be killed.
Li Lin nodded and continued, "Yes, they can be eliminated, but we need to find a way."
"But the mortality rate is still very high!" Jiang Liu questioned.
"What I mean is relative!" Li Lin said with a wry smile. "You might not have noticed, but in these otherworldly supernatural events we're experiencing right now, the ghosts are indestructible! All we can do is hold out until time runs out or find some way to survive; it's not like in real-world supernatural events where there are methods to eliminate spirits!"
"I see now, but I have another question. If there are indeed supernatural events in the real world, then surely the government would notice? And with the internet being so advanced now, if someone just died here, it's likely that the whole country would know about it soon after; it can't be hidden!"
