After reaching the elevator door, the two were panting heavily, exchanging glances that reflected their lingering fear and confusion.
They didn’t dare linger too long and hurried into the elevator back to the first floor. Once they arrived, Jiang Liu glanced at the time and realized that only seven or eight minutes had passed. He couldn’t help but feel puzzled.
[The time spent fumbling around in that darkness surely felt longer than seven or eight minutes. But why does the clock show such a short duration? Is it an illusion?]
Before Jiang Liu could ponder further, Li Lin forced a smile at him and said, “Looks like we’re really lucky; the ghost didn’t kill us!”
Thinking back on what had just happened, Jiang Liu felt a wave of fear wash over him, but more than that, he was filled with questions. He turned to Li Lin and asked, “How did you know that if there was a ghost, it wouldn’t trigger a dead end?”
Li Lin had calmed down considerably by then. Looking at the spacious lobby, she explained, “I just stumbled upon it. When that cold hand gripped mine, I sensed something was off. Then I thought about it: a ghost wouldn’t randomly hold our hands without reason. But if it wanted to kill us, it wouldn’t give us such an obvious hint. So I guessed that the ghost wanted to lead us out of that darkness. As for why it was so blatant, I figured it was a warning against triggering a dead end.”
“Looks like you were right!”
Jiang Liu couldn’t help but smile wryly; acting on mere speculation seemed reckless. It appeared that those who had survived several supernatural encounters were not to be underestimated.
“Just lucky,” Li Lin humbly replied, furrowing her brow as she asked Jiang Liu, “But I’m still puzzled about why the ghost wanted to lead us out.”
“I have the same question. If it truly wanted to kill us, it wouldn’t act this way!” Jiang Liu shared his confusion about this phenomenon.
“Li Lin, have you noticed that Liu the Great is missing?”
At that moment, Xu Qian’s voice came from behind them. The two turned around to see Xu Qian and a girl named Lin Mao'er stepping out of the elevator.
Both were taken aback! Li Lin rushed over anxiously and looked at Xu Qian, asking, “Are you guys okay? Did you encounter anything?”
Xu Qian and Lin Mao'er both looked puzzled, unable to comprehend what Li Lin was talking about. Xu Qian asked in confusion, "What do we have to worry about? Ghosts?"
Li Lin's thoughts got stuck in her throat as she stared at Xu Qian, unsure of how to respond.
At that moment, Jiang Liu approached and shared the supernatural occurrences he and Li Lin had encountered on the second floor. After hearing this, Xu Qian and Lin Mao'er both expressed fear, realizing how fortunate they were to have gone to the third floor instead, which was completely different from the eerie atmosphere of the second floor; it was filled with lights everywhere.
Lin Mao'er nodded in agreement, confirming Xu Qian's words. Jiang Liu and Li Lin exchanged glances, both filled with confusion.
"Could it be that only the second floor is a special case? Where can ghosts appear?"
"Have you found Liu the Great?"
Just as Jiang Liu was lost in thought, the voice of the White-Collar Man came from behind. He and Student Sister were part of a team searching the first floor.
"No, we haven't seen Liu the Great," Li Lin replied, snapping back to reality and shaking her head.
"Neither have we; we couldn't find Liu the Great," Xu Qian added, also shaking his head.
"What should we do? It's almost half an hour already, and we still can't find Liu the Great!" Student Sister said anxiously.
"We have no choice; we've done our best. But it seems likely that Liu the Great has fallen victim to a ghost," Li Lin said helplessly.
It was only their second day at the hotel, and someone had already mysteriously disappeared. It was easy to imagine how much more difficult their lives would become in the hours ahead.
"Let's head back to our rooms for now. We can discuss anything further once we're there," Jiang Liu suggested.
Everyone nodded and returned to their respective rooms. Jiang Liu began to sort through all the questions that had been troubling him over the past few days.
First, why were they required to stay in this hotel for a week? If the ghost started killing more quickly, they wouldn’t last even a week; there had to be another way out!
Second, where exactly did Liu the Great disappear? Was it from his room? Or did he leave unnoticed while everyone was distracted? But Lin Mao'er had been paying attention to everyone’s rooms and hadn’t seen Liu the Great leave.
Third, why hadn’t the ghost killed me and Li Lin when we were on the second floor? Instead, it took us away from there! Was it because we hadn’t triggered a dead end? That didn’t make sense; if that wasn’t considered triggering a dead end, then Liu the Great wouldn’t have needed to die so soon.
Fourth, the hotel’s restrictions allowed them to go out at night but imposed a time limit, requiring everyone to stay in their own room! It felt excessive, and instinct told him that the hotel’s restrictions couldn’t be that simple! There had to be more meaning behind them!
“Hey! Jiang Liu, why aren’t you talking?”
Li Lin's voice from inside the hotel interrupted Jiang Liu's thoughts.
“Ah! I was thinking about something and didn’t hear what you said!” Jiang Liu replied.
“What were you thinking? Come out and let’s discuss it together,” came the voice of the White-Collar Man.
“I was thinking about the content of that note we found in the hotel!” Jiang Liu selectively posed a question.
“Are you referring to the restrictions imposed by the hotel?” Li Lin asked.
“Yes, now that I think about it, I feel like the hotel’s restrictions are not just as simple as limiting us!” Jiang Liu answered.
“Not limiting us! Could it be limiting the ghost instead?” White-Collar Man casually suggested.
Upon hearing this, Jiang Liu's eyes lit up as he thought, That's right! If the hotel's rules not only restrict us but also limit the actions of ghosts, then the hotel's restrictions can be seen as clues for us!
After pondering for a moment, Jiang Liu asked Li Lin, "Have you ever experienced this type of supernatural event before?"
There was silence in Li Lin's room for a while, likely as he recalled past experiences. Eventually, Li Lin spoke up, "I haven't personally encountered such supernatural occurrences, but I've heard some old seniors talk about their experiences. It seems like there was something else... but I can't quite remember."
"You really need to remember!" Jiang Liu urged anxiously, feeling that what Li Lin had forgotten could be an important clue.
"Wait a moment; let me think carefully."
Everyone held their breath, afraid to disturb Li Lin's thoughts. After a long while, Li Lin finally spoke again, "I forgot the specifics, but I do remember one thing: that old senior once said that when experiencing such supernatural events, one should learn to take initiative rather than passively accept certain facts."

"What's wrong? Do you have any thoughts?" Li Lin asked.
"Not yet, but I think I've already guessed one of the hints the hotel has given us!" Jiang Liu replied confidently.
"What! You already know a hint?" Li Lin and the others exclaimed in surprise.
