Horror Chapter
“Otherworld? Are you joking?”
As Li Lin was explaining to the Student Sister, another newcomer with a white-collar appearance also woke up and expressed disbelief upon hearing Li Lin's explanation.
“Oh! It seems everyone is awake now.” Li Lin looked at the other three who had also regained consciousness and continued, “Yes, you heard me right, and I’m not mistaken. This is indeed the Otherworld! A place filled with ghosts and death!”
“Are you kidding me? Or am I part of some reality show? Where are the cameras?”
The White-Collar Man clearly did not believe Li Lin’s nonsense, thinking it was all just a television stunt. He began searching around for any hidden cameras. The other two newcomers, upon hearing the White-Collar Man's words, sighed in relief; they would rather believe this was some kind of reality show than accept the explanation from this frail-looking man.
“So you are the most well-mannered newcomer I've ever met,” Li Lin said helplessly as he watched the new guy search every possible hiding spot for cameras. He turned to Jiang Liu.
After the three newcomers had thoroughly searched the car for any hidden cameras without finding anything, they finally turned their attention back to Li Lin. The White-Collar Man shouted at him, “Tell me! Tell me where you’ve hidden the cameras!”
“I’ve long since moved past this.” Li Lin remained calm, as if he had experienced this situation many times before. “This place is no longer the reality you imagine. You can call it Otherworld or a multidimensional space, but I prefer another name—Edge World!”
The other four newcomers fell silent upon hearing this term, including Jiang Liu.
Li Lin looked at their astonished expressions and spoke with a hint of resignation: “I know that many of you are unwilling to believe, but this is reality.”
“Tell me, please tell me this isn’t real, that you’re just tricking us!”
The Student Sister was on the verge of breaking down upon learning the truth. The other three newcomers looked at Li Lin with pleading eyes, hoping to hear him say that it was all a lie. Unfortunately, they received a negative response.
“I hope you can accept this reality quickly. I know there may still be some who refuse to believe what I’m saying, but that’s okay! There will be opportunities later to prove that what I said is true. For now, I hope you take my next words to heart because they will greatly affect whether you survive the coming hours!”
Although deep down Li Lin had little faith in these newcomers’ ability to survive this supernatural event and felt it was a waste of effort to help them, he decided to extend his hand anyway. As for whether they would heed his advice, that was no longer his concern; he had done what he could.
The other newcomers were silent. Though they still harbored some disbelief, they rationally chose to listen to what Li Lin had to say next.
“The space we are currently in—its purpose remains unknown! The only certainty is that in this Edge World, bizarre and terrifying occurrences are everywhere. For instance, this car we are in can be considered our safe zone within this world. However, if you get out before reaching your destination, then unfortunately, you will encounter those terrifying monsters that only exist in your imagination. To those creatures, our living bodies are like a beam of light in the darkness; they will rush towards you and tear everything apart—including your soul!”
Hearing Li Lin's words, Jiang Liu turned his gaze towards the darkness outside the bus. At that moment, he suddenly felt as if countless terrifying creatures were lurking in the profound shadows, watching him.
The other four newcomers instinctively moved away from the windows after hearing Li Lin's explanation, fearing that a pair of hands might suddenly reach out from the darkness and pull them into the depths of hell.
"How could such a place exist!"
The White-Collar Man was still struggling to accept Li Lin's words, unwilling to believe what he had just heard.
"I understand what you're thinking right now; it's unbelievable, right? But that's the reality. When I first experienced this kind of supernatural event, I couldn't believe it either. I thought it was just a dream I was having. However, a series of terrifying events forced me to overturn everything I had known for over twenty years."
Li Lin pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and offered some to the newcomers before lighting one himself. He continued, "Before we reach our destination, I can answer any questions you have. But remember, this only applies until we arrive. After that, I won't answer any questions!"
"Why?" Student Sister asked, now calmer and curious.
"Because I don't want to waste time on unnecessary matters," Li Lin said, exhaling smoke as he looked at the newcomers. "Alright, let's save those discussions for after you've survived this supernatural event. For now, if you have any questions before we get there, ask quickly!"
"What is the task for this supernatural event?"
As a newcomer, Jiang Liu felt it was crucial to clarify the mission details. After all, he had already gone through two similar events before this one. He realized that understanding the task was vital; he had suffered in previous instances due to not paying attention to the mission details.
"The task is quite simple; we just need to stay in a hotel for a week."
"So simple?" The White-Collar Man asked in surprise.
"Simple?" Li Lin chuckled at the White-Collar Man, his expression somewhat exasperated. "Yes! It's simple—simple enough that all of you newcomers might end up dead during this supernatural event!"
"How is that possible!" The White-Collar Man exclaimed in terror.
"Don't believe me? What do you think a supernatural event is?" By this point, Li Lin's expression turned somewhat sinister as he grinned at the other newcomers. "Fear, despair, and death are its main themes! You know that every time we've gone through such events before, we've barely survived!"
Xu Qian noticed something was off with Li Lin's demeanor and patted him on the shoulder reassuringly. "Alright, alright, don't dwell on those past experiences. The important thing is that we're alive now! And we need to keep living and escape this damned world!"
After being comforted by Xu Qian, Li Lin's expression gradually returned to calmness. He adjusted his black-framed glasses and apologized to the startled newcomers. "I'm sorry; I got a bit carried away just now."
The crowd, startled by Li Lin's earlier expression, felt a sense of unease creeping into their hearts. They were beginning to accept the reality that Li Lin had presented to them: they were in a world that could not be understood through scientific reasoning.
The White-Collar Man remained silent, staring blankly at the floor, lost in thought.
"Actually, we shouldn't be too desperate. It won't assign us tasks that are guaranteed to lead to our deaths. We just need to observe carefully and find a way out to safely navigate this supernatural incident," Xu Qian reassured the others, noticing their expressions of despair.
"Who is it? I've heard you and Li Lin mention 'it' several times!" Jiang Liu pointed out, noticing the fear that flickered across Li Lin's and Xu Qian's faces whenever they referred to 'it.'
"Indeed, your qualities make you one of the best newcomers I've seen," Li Lin praised Jiang Liu once more. He was particularly attentive to Jiang Liu's excellent performance, speaking to him with a tone different from how he treated other newcomers.
"It is merely a term we use to refer to the force behind these supernatural events. Each time we receive a task, an image suddenly appears in our minds, informing us of the task details and sometimes even the location. That's why we call this mysterious force 'it.'"
"Then why isn't this information appearing in my mind right now?" Jiang Liu asked.
"Because you are not yet considered a true Escaper," Li Lin replied, introducing a term that Jiang Liu had never heard before.
Escaper? What could that possibly mean?
