Horror Chapter
In the blink of an eye, more than half a month had passed. During this time, Jiang Liu had been working at a 24-hour convenience store at a crossroads, arranged by Nianxia's Aunt. The store sold various snacks and drinks, and since it operated around the clock, his shift started at 1 PM. The only perk was that there was Wi-Fi in the store and a computer that could access the internet, allowing Jiang Liu to occasionally slack off during his boring night shifts.
Over the past half month, Jiang Liu's relationship with Nianxia had rapidly progressed from mere acquaintances to friends. Of course, this was just his perspective; only Nianxia knew what place he held in her heart. Nevertheless, this development made Jiang Liu feel elated throughout the month, working tirelessly as if he were a dedicated worker. This might be an exaggeration, as there was hardly any heavy lifting to do in the convenience store, especially during the night shift. The first half of the night was relatively busy, but by the second half, there wasn't even a single soul in sight, leaving him to idly play on the computer.
The peaceful life over the past month had made him forget about the terrifying events he experienced half a month ago. He thought he had finally escaped that despairing incident, but he had forgotten one thing: peace does not necessarily mean a stable life; it could also be brewing a greater storm!
That night, as the clock's hands pointed to a certain hour, Jiang Liu sat bored in front of the store's computer browsing some questionable websites. With nothing on his mind, he glanced at the time and figured that no one would come at this hour. He closed the website and got up to head to another counter to heat up some Spicy Hot Pot to fill his stomach.
At first, when he started working, Jiang Liu wanted to make a good impression on Aunt Nianxia and endured hunger without eating anything from the store. It wasn't until later that Nianxia called him and informed him that he could eat whatever he wanted from the store as long as it wasn't excessive. This was permitted by her Aunt since she left Jiang Liu alone for night shifts and there was only this store selling food nearby. It was unreasonable for anyone to endure hunger during late hours; thus, they set up a computer to keep the staff awake and attentive.
After learning all this, Jiang Liu felt moved to tears, thinking how understanding Nianxia's Aunt was as a boss. However, upon further reflection, he realized that there were only two employees in the store—Nianxia and himself. The previous two employees had resigned due to personal matters just before Nianxia brought him in to work, giving her Aunt some breathing room.
Moreover, since there were only two employees in the store now, Nianxia obviously couldn't take night shifts; therefore, he was left as the sole choice for nighttime work. He might have been tricked by Nianxia, but who could blame him? At that time, Jiang Liu's intelligence clearly needed recharging; he followed Nianxia without asking any questions.
"Damn this cohabitation life! She works during the day while I work at night! Except for when we hand over shifts, I spend all my time alone sleeping like a lonely ghost! I hardly get to see her!" Jiang Liu grumbled angrily while waiting for his Spicy Hot Pot.
Where was the good cohabitation life?
Thinking back to half a month ago when Aunt Nianxia spoke enticingly about living together made Jiang Liu feel naïve. He sighed over the shattered dream of a beautiful cohabitation life while comforting himself with the thought that they were indeed living together now—love would come! Bread would come too! He just needed to be patient.
During his daydreaming, he added more and more ingredients into the pot until he finally realized that it was overflowing with food.
"Oh no! This is definitely going to get me scolded by Nianxia's Aunt!"
Looking at the overflowing ingredients in the pot, Jiang Liu felt like crying. The mess he had created, he had to eat it all, even if it meant shedding tears!
With gritted teeth, Jiang Liu decided to treat the Spicy Hot Pot like a regular hot pot, flipping out the cooked food from the bottom and eating it, while simultaneously opening a few bottles of soda.
Although the air conditioning was on in the restaurant, Jiang Liu soon found himself sweating profusely. Just as he sighed over his miserable fate while eating, a customer walked into the shop.
Is there really someone coming in?
Jiang Liu thought to himself. But since a customer had entered, he figured it was just another patron; why bother with the details?
“Hello, welcome! What can I get for you?”
Jiang Liu asked casually without looking up, as he was still focused on tackling the food waste issue before him, which directly affected his paycheck.
After a long silence without a response, Jiang Liu felt a jolt of surprise! He thought: Could they have taken something and run off?
Quickly lifting his head to look for the person, he saw a man in a black trench coat standing not far from him, quietly observing him without saying a word. Jiang Liu began to scrutinize the man's peculiar attire.
The shiny black shoes reflected the restaurant's lights, and the impeccably wrinkle-free trench coat covered most of his body. His hair was a messy Granny Gray, and his appearance was so ordinary that one could easily forget it in an instant.
Yet this seemingly mundane face possessed eyes that seemed to see right through one's soul! Jiang Liu felt uneasy under the gaze of the Trench Coat Man and wanted to curse but held back.
What kind of lunatic is this? Wearing such heavy clothing in summer without fearing heatstroke outside.
“Hello! Is there anything you need?”
Jiang Liu could no longer bear the gaze of the Trench Coat Man and was the first to speak up.
"Who are you?" Jiang Liu asked, a hint of confusion in his voice.
"I want to tell you that everything has not ended; it has only just begun," the Trench Coat Man replied, a strange smile creeping onto his ordinary face.
"What do you mean?" A wave of intense unease surged from the depths of Jiang Liu's heart. He felt as if a terrifying storm was slowly approaching him. "Who exactly are you?!"
"Haha!" The Trench Coat Man chuckled. "Who I am is not important to you right now. What matters is that this period of calm has made you forget everything you experienced over the past half month! I am simply here to remind you!"
"Who are you? What do you know?!" Jiang Liu, unable to maintain his composure, rushed out from behind the counter and grabbed the Trench Coat Man by the collar, shouting uncontrollably.
The words of the Trench Coat Man laid bare the questions Jiang Liu had been too afraid to confront for the past half month. The tranquility of his life had led him to believe that those terrifying memories would fade away with time, never to resurface. But with just a few cryptic phrases from the Trench Coat Man, those buried memories began to resurface once more.
He was scared! Scared that the horrific game would return and shatter his peaceful life! Ever since experiencing the Death Game half a month ago, his love for a tranquil existence had exceeded all expectations. He did not want to be plunged back into fear and danger of death!
Yet just when he resolved to live a good life, the Trench Coat Man suddenly appeared in his world, declaring that everything had not ended but was only just beginning!
