Horror Chapter
Where am I? On a train? Was everything that just happened a dream?
He opened his eyes to find himself lying in a seat, the train moving calmly and slowly along the tracks. The pitch-black night outside the window filled his vision, with occasional flashes of nearby lights streaking by like lightning. Everything was so peaceful.
His previously tense body was now completely relaxed. He didn't know how long it had been until a cold signal from his brain made him realize that he was drenched in cold sweat without even noticing. Instinctively curling up, his wandering thoughts returned to his body at that moment.
Why is this happening? Am I really caught in some unknown supernatural event? Why have two people told me they would be waiting for me in future events? Why! What is going on?
He couldn't make sense of it; everything that had happened today had shaken his worldview to its core! He felt like he was going insane! His thoughts were spiraling into dangerous territory! He needed answers! He urgently needed to know what was happening! Why was he experiencing this?
He was just an ordinary person, so ordinary that he wouldn’t even create a ripple in a crowd. Yet, this utterly mundane individual had encountered supernatural events one after another within such a short time—events that others might never experience in their entire lives!
Confusion, fear, and despair swept over him like tidal waves crashing against the shore. He felt as if he could hardly breathe, cold sweat pouring down from his forehead like pearls, dripping onto the swaying floor.
At that moment, the girl sitting across from Jiang Liu noticed something was off. He was curled up unusually, his face pale to the point of being frightening. She immediately stood up from her seat and approached him, squatting down with concern. "Hey? Sir! Are you okay?"
But at that moment, Jiang Liu's mind was a chaotic mess, like a city in ruins after a tsunami, unable to hear her words.
"Sir? Sir!" The girl seemed to have some knowledge of first aid; without hesitation, she unbuttoned Jiang Liu's shirt and laid him on the cool floor, methodically performing emergency measures.
Gradually, Jiang Liu's breathing began to improve, and his curled-up body started to relax. Although his condition was getting better, he still ignored the girl's words. With no other choice, she struggled to seek help from a few onlookers to lift Jiang Liu back into his seat and placed his head on her lap for careful attention.
Some kind-hearted passengers called for the Conductor and inquired about Jiang Liu's condition. After receiving the girl's assurance that he was fine, they arranged for him to be moved to the sleeper car before leaving with relief. The concerned girl followed Jiang Liu as he changed compartments, determined to take care of him until he woke up.
The night passed unknowingly, and when Jiang Liu woke up, he found himself lying on a bed with a girl sitting beside him, engrossed in a book.
"What’s going on? Am I caught up in another supernatural event? And who is this girl? How did she end up next to me?"
"Ah! You're awake!" The girl noticed Jiang Liu stirring and asked with concern, "How are you feeling? Is there anywhere that still hurts?"
Jiang Liu, experiencing such close proximity to a girl for the first time, felt a bit flustered and stammered, "N-no, I'm fine. I feel okay."
"Then I can relax! But what were you thinking? Running around when you're sick! Luckily you ran into me; otherwise, who knows where you would have ended up!" The girl scolded him sternly.
"It seems I fainted. This girl must have saved my life. Indeed! The aftereffects are getting worse; has it really come to the point of fainting?"
"Hey! I'm talking to you!" The girl noticed Jiang Liu zoning out during her reprimand and became even more irritated. "Let me tell you, people like you are the most annoying! Don't you know it's basic courtesy to pay attention when someone is speaking to you?"
"Uh... I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I suddenly thought of something else. Also, thank you for saving my life," Jiang Liu said, lowering his attitude significantly and expressing his heartfelt gratitude. After all, this girl had saved him; it was necessary to thank her.
"No need!" As the saying goes, one doesn't hit a smiling face. Seeing Jiang Liu's sincere gratitude eased her anger considerably. She waved her hand dismissively and said, "You need to take care of your own body. I couldn't just stand by and watch you die when you suddenly fainted. If you really want to thank me, taking care of yourself is the best way!"
"I'll definitely be more careful next time!" Jiang Liu quickly promised, patting his chest to assure her he wouldn't make the same mistake again.
"Pfft!" The girl's laughter at Jiang Liu's exaggerated gesture made her roll her eyes at him. In that moment, Jiang Liu felt his heart skip a beat; the world seemed to brighten extraordinarily because of her smile.
"Alright! Now that I see you're fine, I should head back to my compartment! By the way, the Conductor came by earlier, worried you might have another episode, so he asked you to rest in this room and ensured no other passengers would come in. He wanted you to wake up and have a good rest, but you'll still need to cover the cost of the sleeper ticket!"
After saying this, the girl began to pack her books to leave the room, but was stopped by Jiang Liu. "Wait! What if I faint again?"
The girl glanced at Jiang Liu with a skeptical look and suddenly smiled. "You're not my type! So I suggest you don't waste your efforts!"
"You’re overthinking it," Jiang Liu quickly denied. "What I mean is, since I have to pay for this sleeper ticket anyway, and no other passengers will come in, why not just stay here and rest until we reach our destination? It saves you from having to go back to that hard bench."
The girl looked at Jiang Liu's innocent expression and thought for a moment before replying, "Alright! But I've already told you that you're not my type, so don’t even think about flirting with me!"
"Okay! I promise not to flirt with you at all! I just want to chat a bit more with my lifesaver!"
The girl laughed at Jiang Liu and sat back down on the opposite bunk, opening her book and ignoring him as she quietly read.
At that moment, Jiang Liu finally noticed the girl's appearance. Her pure white dress and fair skin looked delicate under the moonlight, while her long black hair cascaded around her shoulders like a waterfall. A faint blush tinted her cheeks. She seemed as serene as an ethereal fairy!
Deeply captivated by this enchanting scene, Jiang Liu was suddenly reminded of a phrase he had seen online before:
"In that fleeting moment when we brushed past each other, my heart raced uncontrollably; in that first second of our conversation, I felt like a child lost in wonder; in that moment of shared laughter, my world found its belonging; and in that instant when we held hands and gazed into each other's eyes, I knew I could never marry anyone but you!"
