I was slightly taken aback, not quite understanding what Gu Chen meant. However, when I saw his gaze sweep over Mu Yan and Li, then back to me, an inexplicable sense of foreboding rose within me.
Li frowned slightly, and Mu Yan looked at Gu Chen with a face full of confusion.
I took a deep breath and turned my gaze to Gu Chen. The more serious he appeared, the stronger my uneasy feeling became.
Finally, after a pause, I asked, "Master, I don't quite understand your words. Please clarify."
As I spoke those words, my heart nearly leaped into my throat because I had no idea what Gu Chen would say next.
But I was certain that if what he was about to say concerned me, Mu Yan, and Li, it would not be good news.
This feeling was particularly strong in my heart at that moment.
He nodded lightly, his gaze sweeping over Li and Mu Yan once more before returning to me. Then he calmly asked me a question: "Xiao Lin, do you remember what I said before we entered the Chu King's Tomb?"
"Master, you said many things back then, but I'm not sure which one you are referring to. Please enlighten me." I genuinely did not know which statement Gu Chen meant, but his question made my mood even heavier.
Before entering the Chu King's Tomb, Gu Chen had not yet truly accepted me as his disciple.
In other words, it was something he said before officially taking me on as his student. Although he hadn't said much, none of it was good—except for the warnings against being with Mu Yan.
With this thought in mind, I quickly reassured myself, shaking my head and telling myself that Gu Chen wasn't referring to those things; it was just my overthinking and self-imposed pressure.
After all, in the Chu King's Tomb, Gu Chen had already promised me that he would no longer target Mu Yan and had tacitly acknowledged my relationship with her.
A gentleman's word is as valuable as gold.
Moreover, he is Gu Chen—my master. After such a long time together, he should understand the difficulties between Mu Yan and me better and recognize our feelings for each other now.
But then Gu Chen's words left me stunned, frozen in place, unable to believe what I had just heard.
He said calmly, "Humans and ghosts walk different paths."
"Master, what do you mean?" After a long pause, I finally reacted, but disbelief still clouded my face.
He took a deep breath and sighed, seeming somewhat helpless. Yet he repeated his earlier statement: "That's right, this is what I meant, and today I want to discuss this matter."
With Gu Chen's confirmation, a shiver ran through me. It wasn't just me; even Mu Yan looked bewildered, her expression blank.
"What do you mean?" Li was momentarily taken aback, but his gaze quickly turned sharp, locking onto Gu Chen.
Even I couldn't believe it—Gu Chen was indeed implying that he wanted to stop me from being with Mu Yan again. But I quickly snapped at Li.
Yet I ended up asking the same question as him.
"I want you to separate from them; that's it. This time it is necessary, with no room for negotiation," Gu Chen stated firmly, without a hint of hesitation.
I felt as if I had been struck by lightning, my whole body trembling.
I shook my head instantly. "Impossible! Master, why are you stopping us again? Didn't you promise me before that you wouldn't interfere with Mu Yan? Didn't you already acknowledge our relationship?"
I couldn't believe those words could come out of Gu Chen's mouth again. Even more shocking was how heartless he seemed.
But I kept shaking my head. "We've faced too many difficulties together with Mu Yan. Now that I've just recognized Li as well, there's no way I'm separating from them."
"Really won't separate?" Gu Chen asked.
"Absolutely not." My response was unwavering.
He nodded slightly, looking at me for a moment longer. His gaze swept lightly over Mu Yan and Li before he spoke again: "Even if it means death, there will be no separation."
I nodded firmly once more and said, "Once a teacher, always a father. Even if you, Master, were to kill me to stop us, I would not part ways with them. This is a bond, a promise, and a responsibility that I, as a man, must uphold."
My words did not come lightly.
If I had never met Mingyue, or if Mingyue had never known me, then we would not have the many intersections that followed, nor would we face such choices and guilt.
From friends to lovers, and ultimately to strangers.
Throughout history, countless people have gone from acquaintance to understanding, and then to estrangement—all because of the word "love."
So I am afraid. I fear that my unwillingness to confront this today will lead my relationship with Mingyue to evolve into such an ending. A heart may burn with passion, but it can still grow cold.
And once that moment arrives, the bond between Mingyue and me will reach its end.
But I am powerless because I do not know what I should do now—what is right and what is wrong.
Or perhaps it is about facing Mingyue while betraying Mu Yan, or facing Mu Yan while betraying Mingyue.
