Arriving at City, I followed my father's directions and brought Gu Chen and the others to that strange place. Standing on the bridge, I gazed down at the River Surface. At that moment, I noticed that Gu Chen and the others were all frowning slightly.
Seeing their expressions, and recalling the earlier conversation between my father and Gu Chen at home, I couldn't help but feel a mix of confusion and concern.
Following their gaze, I looked toward the River Surface.
However, aside from the gentle breeze causing slight ripples on the Water Surface, I saw nothing unusual.
The entire River Surface was eerily quiet, and I didn't notice anything amiss.
Yet, even though there was nothing visibly wrong, deep down, I had an unsettling feeling that something was indeed off about this river in some way.
That feeling seemed very real, and it felt as if whatever was wrong was not far from us.
Suddenly, a shock ran through me, and I instinctively turned to Gu Chen, my face betraying my alarm.
"Did you notice something?" Gu Chen asked calmly.
I nodded and replied, "Master, I feel like there are eyes watching us from within the water."
The sensation was particularly strong, having appeared suddenly as if a gaze from beneath the surface had just landed on me while I was observing the lake.
It was cold and very real.
At this point, I was certain that beneath this calm River Surface, there must be some terrifying presence.
Could it really be Li?
In broad daylight like this, how could such a feeling arise? Given Li's abilities, perhaps it would make sense.
But if it wasn't Li, then what could it be? That thought sent chills down my spine.
However, with Gu Chen and the other disciples of the Taoist Nine Meridians present, I felt there was nothing to worry about.
After a brief silence, Gu Chen pointed to a section of the River Surface below and said softly, "Take a look at this stretch and see if there's anything different from the others."
His words puzzled me, but I followed his finger and looked over. Initially, aside from the earlier feeling, I didn't notice anything unusual.
But in the next moment, I suddenly made a startling discovery: the distance he indicated, about a hundred meters of River Surface, indeed had a very obvious distinction from the surrounding areas.
This hundred meters of Water Surface seemed to be shrouded in shadow under the trees, giving off an impression of darkness and depth.
In contrast, the distant River Surface shimmered with silver light, rippling beautifully.
"This is due to the gathering of Yin Qi; it's concentrated and not dispersing," I said, looking at Gu Chen in surprise.
Gu Chen nodded. "That's right. It is indeed the accumulation of Yin Qi that has turned this place into a burial ground for something down there, allowing it to cultivate here."
After saying this, Gu Chen glanced at me and continued softly, "Alright, let's all leave. The thing down there has already noticed us. It's not wise to act during the day when there are so many people around. We'll come back at midnight."
Mao Guoxue and the others nodded gently. I had no objections either but quietly asked Gu Chen with some concern, "Master, could it really be..."
"It's possible; we can't rule it out. But we'll know for sure when we see it tonight," Gu Chen replied as he turned and took the lead.
After leaving, Gu Chen instructed me to find a suitable hotel for everyone. We settled into a presidential suite together due to safety concerns.
The remaining time was spent idly watching television or resting with our eyes closed. After dinner, we continued in this manner until midnight when Gu Chen finally spoke up.
He called everyone together and instructed me to check out of the hotel.
The streets were still bustling with pedestrians in the early morning hours, but fortunately, the location of that river was slightly away from the city center, so there weren't too many people around.
Following Gu Chen, we arrived directly at the riverbank, getting closer to the Water Surface. A gentle breeze swept by, sending a shiver down my spine and giving me a chill.
Standing at the riverbank, my gaze was fixed on the Water Surface in front of me, feeling somewhat anxious.
The others stood there as well, silent, and the atmosphere felt tense as everyone's eyes were glued to the River Surface.
However, I didn’t see a hint of heaviness on their faces, which seemed somewhat contrary to the atmosphere around us.
But then again, it made sense; these people were all descendants of the Taoist Nine Meridians, each skilled in their own right. Even if there were formidable beings in the river, they wouldn’t pose a challenge to them.
After a moment, Gu Chen suddenly spoke up.
He gazed calmly at the River Surface as if talking to himself and said, “Since you know our purpose for coming here, aren’t you going to show yourself?”
His sudden words surprised me, but my gaze instinctively turned towards the Water Surface.
Not long after his voice faded, bubbles began to rise from the previously calm Water Surface before us, creating an eerie scene as if boiling water was churning beneath. The area of disturbance was about a meter wide, continuously bubbling up.
I stared intently at that spot and slowly, under the moonlight and the glow of the streetlights on the bridge, I saw what appeared to be a blurred face emerging from the water.
Though pale, I instantly recognized it: “Li.”
I quickly glanced at Gu Chen, but she showed no sign of surprise. The others seemed equally unfazed, as if they had known all along.
Soon, the Water Surface settled again, but now a figure floated above it, half of its body suspended over the Water Surface.
“Li, it’s really you.”
I opened my mouth nervously but found myself at a loss for words.
Although the time apart wasn't too long, seeing her this time made it seem like she had grown quite a bit. Even her body, partially exposed above the water surface, was noticeably taller.
Her gaze fell on me, and there was not much change in her expression as she coldly said, "You came to kill me."
"K-kill you?" I stammered, taken aback, my face turning pale.
"And you brought so many helpers," she continued without waiting for my defense. Her voice seemed to chill even further, and I could see the seriousness etched on her face.
Clearly, whether it was Gu Chen or anyone else present besides me, she could sense an inexplicable pressure emanating from them.
Finally, her gaze suddenly landed on Mu Yan, who stood beside me, trembling with excitement. She paused slightly, and for a moment, her emotions seemed to shift as a glimmer of something unusual flashed in her eyes.
However, when her gaze swept over the others present, her tone instantly turned cold again.
As if questioning me, she said icily, "Mother, are you also here to kill me with them?"
When she asked this question, I felt a sharp pain in my heart, as if something had stabbed me deeply.
At that moment, I could see the despair on her slightly pale face—a sense of helplessness and coldness that came from being abandoned.
