Grandma Jiang did not refuse; each step seemed heavy as she slowly leaned toward the bed. Life and death were determined by fate, and this was Xiao Juan's own choice. Grandma Jiang knew that even if she wanted to stop it, it was impossible.
She had already tried everything she could do.
"Ah!"
Mao Shiba suddenly shouted, recklessly bursting through the door and rushing out. Mao Guoxue and the others sighed softly, shaking their heads slightly, but they did not chase after him.
They understood that for Mao Shiba, staying here would mean facing something that might be too cruel for him.
"Are you really ready?" After a brief pause, her gaze fell on the tearful figure lying beside Lin Hao. Grandma Jiang seemed to muster all her strength.
"Granddaughter is unfilial; please proceed, my lady." She kept her eyes closed, unable to bear seeing Grandma Jiang's current state. Yet, even knowing she was heading toward death, her response was exceptionally resolute, without a hint of hesitation.
A trace of sorrow flickered in Grandma Jiang's eyes, but she said no more. She acted directly, and in an instant, the room fell into silence. Mao Guoxue, Mu Yan, and Mingyue all turned their gazes toward her, watching quietly with their hearts in their throats.
Three days later.
The cold moon hung in the night sky, sleepless as it turned to witness the changes. Unaware of when the yellow leaves fell with the wind, looking up at the vast sky, winter came as autumn faded, leaving a solitary figure with a sorrowful expression.
The night breeze blew gently; a lone figure stood proudly outside the door, slightly tilting their head to gaze at the sky, illuminated by the moonlight, revealing a face full of sorrow.
Suddenly, joyful exclamations erupted from within the room—laughter and sounds of tears of joy filled the air.
He abruptly turned to look back; in that moment, the door swung open. Mingyue rushed out from inside, slightly flustered. Tears sparkled in her eyes, yet her face was filled with joyful surprise as she exclaimed, "He’s awake! He’s finally awake!"
"Three days—three whole days! He’s finally awake!" The person speaking was Mao Guoxue, who seemed almost unable to believe it.
Mingyue nodded repeatedly. "He really woke up! Lin Hao is alive!"
Mao Guoxue was taken aback and then let out a long sigh of relief. After a while, he said with a deep breath, "This way, we can at least repay Grandma Jiang."
"Mm."
Mingyue nodded lightly again, then turned and walked back into the room, with Mao Guoxue following closely behind.
Inside the room, Lin Hao had already opened his eyes, though he still appeared somewhat weak.
Mu Yan sat beside him, her face filled with concern.
When Mao Guoxue and Mingyue entered the room, Lin Hao was noticeably more alert, but he seemed unable to believe that he was still alive.
Once he regained some strength, he learned the details from Mao Guoxue and the others.
This revelation caused Lin Hao's heart to sink, and his face instantly turned pale once more.
"Hey, you don't need to blame yourself. The reason you're in this situation is because of Grandma Jiang and Xiao Juan. This can be seen as a punishment for them," Mao Guoxue sighed and tried to comfort him.
I remained silent, but the truth of exchanging one life for another—sacrificing Xiao Juan to save myself—was something I found hard to accept at that moment.
"Alright, you've just woken up and your body is still weak. You should rest for now. I'll step out and have someone bring you some food," Mao Guoxue said before sighing again and leaving the room.
Soon, only Mu Yan and Mingyue remained in the room. Mu Yan stood at Lin Hao's bedside while Mingyue kept a slight distance nearby.
Their eyes met, and looking at Mu Yan, I had already learned everything from Mao Guoxue. There were no unnecessary words or sweet nothings—just a simple thank you.
Yet within that thank you was a profound sense of gratitude and emotion.
Of course, I needed to express my thanks to Mu Yan, but I felt the same way about Mingyue.
So after thanking Mu Yan, I also turned to Mingyue and said the same.
Mu Yan shook her head, and Mingyue shook her head too, but their eyes were filled with tears.
I did not ask why, for I knew it was because they were happy that I had survived.
Yet the cost of this survival was something that was hard to accept.
The next day, after a night of rest, I had nearly recovered. After breakfast, my strength had returned significantly, and with the support of Mingyue and Mu Yan, I walked out of the room.
I was going to meet a few people: Grandma Jiang, Xiao Juan, and Mao Shiba.
According to what Mingyue and Mu Yan told me, the reason I was alive was that Grandma Jiang had extracted the Gu Worm from Xiao Juan's body and then placed that Gu Worm into mine. As long as the Gu Worm remained within me, my life was spared.
However, the outcome for Xiao Juan was regrettable. Although it was surprising that she had not died, she fell into a prolonged coma.
This state could last a lifetime.
For her, being a living dead might be considered fortunate; but for those who were alive, it could be a torment.
I wondered how Grandma Jiang felt every day facing her granddaughter who lay unresponsive. It must have been a heart-wrenching experience.
Then there was Mao Shiba. After Grandma Jiang left, he naturally followed her to take care of Xiao Juan for the rest of his life.
From this alone, one could see how deep Mao Shiba's feelings for Xiao Juan were. While I felt guilty, I also felt inadequate in comparison.
By the time we arrived at Grandma Jiang's house, it was almost noon. Grandma Jiang did not react much to our arrival and said little.
Xiao Juan lay in her room, peaceful like a sleeping beauty, serene on her bed.
Mao Shiba sat silently at her bedside, never leaving her side; his expression full of deep affection.
The scene filled me with an even deeper sense of guilt, but all I could do was bow deeply to Grandma Jiang and Mao Shiba, offering my apologies. Then, I took one last deep look at Xiao Juan, who lay motionless on the bed, before turning to leave.
I couldn't bear to watch any longer, nor did I know how to face the situation.
She loved me, yet it led to her own suffering and ruined her life.
Upon returning to Upper Clear Academy, I spent the entire day indoors, engulfed in profound self-reproach.
I had no idea what to do next or how to move forward; I felt utterly lost.
It wasn't until I received a phone call that night that I finally found a sense of purpose and let out a sigh of relief.
The call was from He Si. It was the first time I had heard from him since we parted ways. He informed me that he and my master, Gu Chen, were currently in Qinghai, where they could find the Divine Dragon and obtain Dragon Blood. He urged me to come to Qinghai to seek them out.
The specific location was at Qinghai Lake.
