Grandma Jiang's expression was not good, and neither was Xiao Juan's. Even Mao Shiba looked the same; apart from Mao Guoxue, the three of them wore cold faces, as if someone owed them money.
It was understandable for Grandma Jiang and Xiao Juan to be this way, but seeing Mao Shiba like this puzzled me a bit.
However, after a moment's thought, it made sense. I already knew that Mao Shiba liked Xiao Juan.
His current attitude towards me could only be attributed to Xiao Juan.
This made me feel a mix of helplessness and amusement.
They walked straight into the room, and I briefly introduced their identities to my parents and Liu Man.
Seeing me lying on the bed, looking miserable, Xiao Juan stood beside Grandma Jiang. She glanced at me from a distance before turning her head away. I was a bit surprised; this behavior didn't seem like her at all.
But it was for the best; it saved me quite a bit of trouble.
Looking at my current state, Mao Guoxue frowned and said, "Yang Yi came yesterday."
I nodded with a grim expression and replied, "Yes, thankfully Liu Man and those police outside were here; otherwise, I probably wouldn't have seen today's sun."
Mao Guoxue nodded slightly in response. "Unfortunately, there's no sun outside either."
His words darkened my mood further, and my parents' expressions also fell as they realized that Mao Guoxue was the person I had invited to help. They quickly sought his assistance in resolving the village's crisis.
Of course, Mao Guoxue did not refuse; he had come specifically to help me this time.
As I was speaking, my phone rang again. When I picked it up, I was surprised to see that it was Mingyue calling. Even more astonishing was the fact that she was in Henan and currently in City.
She asked for my address over the phone, saying she wanted to come find me.
The last time we parted, Mingyue mentioned she had some personal matters to attend to. Had she resolved them now?
I felt puzzled but still provided her with the address. I then asked Liu Man for a favor, asking her to arrange for someone to pick up Mingyue.
Although Mingyue might not be a match for Yang Yi given her abilities, she could assist Mao Guoxue from the sidelines, which put my mind at ease.
“Second Uncle, the lives of everyone in our village depend on you now.” After hanging up with Mingyue, I looked seriously at Mao Guoxue.
Mao Guoxue nodded and said, “You don’t need to worry about this. Since I’m here, nothing will go wrong. The main concern is still Yang Yi.”
“Yeah, if he doesn’t die, I won’t find peace.” I nearly gritted my teeth in hatred at the thought of Yang Yi.
Mao Guoxue glanced at me but didn’t say anything.
His gaze then fell on Mao Shiba as he instructed, “Eighteen, bring out what we have.”
Mao Shiba nodded and turned to leave.
Mao Guoxue said to me calmly, “Have your dad take me with him to your Back Mountain Graveyard.”
My dad stood by, and upon hearing this, he immediately walked over with an excited expression and said, "Master Mao, I'll take you there right now."
Mao Guoxue nodded. After Mao Shiba gathered the prepared items, they followed my dad towards the Back Mountain Graveyard.
At that moment, Liu Man approached and said, "Lin Hao, how about I let my people head back to the office? If we delay any longer, it won't be good for me to report back."
Hearing this, I quickly nodded and replied, "Thank you for your help."
"Come on, there's no need to be polite. You've helped us too," Liu Man said with a smile before turning to arrange things.
In an instant, only my mom, Grandma Jiang, Xiao Juan, and I remained in the room.
With no one else around, Grandma Jiang's gaze turned cold as it swept over me.
I was startled and quickly called out, "Grandma Jiang."
She snorted softly and shot me a fierce glare, startling my mom as well. My mom looked at Grandma Jiang with concern and asked, "Excuse me, has Lin offended you in some way? If so, I can apologize on his behalf. Please don't hold it against him."
Grandma Jiang waved her hand dismissively. "This is none of your business."
With that, she leaned on her cane and walked directly to the front of my bed, her seemingly murky eyes shining brightly as they fixed on me.
"Grandma Jiang..."
I looked at her and weakly called out again, feeling a subtle pressure emanating from her.
"Let me ask you a question, Lin."
"Please go ahead, Grandma," I replied quickly.
"How is my granddaughter, Xiao Juan?" she said calmly.
"Xiao Juan is doing very well," I answered almost without thinking.
"Really well?" Grandma Jiang furrowed her brow and asked again.
I affirmed, "Yes, really well."
"That's good," Grandma Jiang nodded and said, "What if I were to arrange a marriage between you and Xiao Juan?"
"What? What are you saying, Grandma?" Her words caught me off guard, and I instantly widened my eyes, glancing between Grandma Jiang and the silent Xiao Juan beside her, startled by what Grandma Jiang had just said.
My mother was also taken aback by Grandma Jiang's statement, her face filled with astonishment as she looked at her.
Then she couldn't help but steal a few glances at Xiao Juan before looking toward another room.
In that room, Mu Yan's body lay on another bed, which made my mother's expression turn somewhat complicated. It seemed she had begun to understand something.
"Don't play dumb with me. What I mean is simple: I want you to marry Xiao Juan," Grandma Jiang said, her tone suddenly cold, her face darkening instantly.
This time, I understood clearly what she meant.
However, a hint of helplessness flashed across my face. After a brief silence, I finally shook my head and looked at Grandma Jiang with determination. "Grandma, I cannot marry Xiao Juan."
Though it was just a moment, many thoughts raced through my mind.
"It really can't be done," a hint of severity crossed Grandma Jiang's face.
I took a deep breath and glanced at Xiao Juan standing beside me. Her expression was stiff, her crimson lips tightly pressed together.
I knew she must be feeling extremely hurt, but I still shook my head and said, "Xiao Juan is great. She's not only beautiful but also lively and cheerful. With her qualities, she could easily find someone ten or even a hundred times better than me."
"Good, kid. You're impressive."
To my surprise, Grandma Jiang smiled at that moment, but her smile sent a chill down my spine.
Finally, she raised her cane and pointed it at me. "Kid, you will regret what you said today."
"I'm sorry, Grandma." I knew she must be very angry at this moment, so I could only lower my head.
"No, the one you should apologize to is not me, but Xiao Juan for her loyalty," Grandma Jiang said, suddenly turning around and calling out, "Xiao Juan, come out with me."
Xiao Juan nodded, giving me a deep look filled with sorrow.
I wanted to say something, but as I watched their retreating figures, I opened my mouth but couldn't find the words.
My mother sighed helplessly.
Outside the door, Grandma Jiang stood with her back to Xiao Juan, her tone tinged with a hint of concern. "So, have you thought it over? If you really want to be with him, this is the only way."
"Grandma..."
Xiao Juan looked up at Grandma Jiang's aged back, tears shimmering in her eyes.
"Well then, how do you want me to help you?" Grandma Jiang turned around, her face filled with sighs. Upon seeing Xiao Juan's expression, her heart ached once more.
Xiao Juan wiped away the tears that had already fallen from the corners of her eyes. In the next moment, a glimmer of determination appeared in her gaze as she bit her lip and said, "I'll do it the way Grandma suggested."
