When I returned to find Mingyue, I realized just how wise and important my decision had been.
She lay on the ground, pale and covered in blood, a line of crimson at the corner of her mouth. It was clear she was at the end of her strength, with no will left to resist.
Yang Yi stood before her, a cold smile on his face, his features twisted in malice.
In his hand, he gripped a branch as thick as an arm, raised slightly, ready to bring it crashing down onto Mingyue's head.
There was no hint of mercy, no sign of compassion.
The scene before me ignited a furious shout: "Yang Yi, stop!"
A flame of anger blazed within me; if that blow landed on Mingyue's face, even if she survived, it would not end well for her.
Hearing my voice, Yang Yi paused, the stick he was about to swing frozen in mid-air.
When he looked up and saw me, his face broke into that cold smile again as he said leisurely, "I didn't expect you to run away and then come back. Are you here to seek death?"
I replied darkly, "Your target is me. Don't harm her."
Yang Yi shrugged nonchalantly. "Since you've come here, I don't mind. After all, I don't want to offend another Unloading Gate."
With that, he indeed abandoned Mingyue and took a step toward me.
What surprised me was that Yang Yi now appeared noticeably weaker than before.
The oppressive and chilling aura that had surrounded him had vanished completely.
"You, why did you turn back?"
Mingyue lay on the ground, watching as Yang Yi stepped toward me. She slightly turned her weak head, tilting it to look at me, seemingly both powerless and resentful, her teeth clenched tightly.
I sighed and looked at her helplessly, saying, "Knowing full well that leaving you alone is dangerous, how could I only care about my own safety and disregard your life? That would be selfish. It proves that coming back was the right choice; otherwise, if something happened to you, I would never find peace for the rest of my life."
Upon hearing this, she opened her mouth.
But in the end, she couldn't utter a single word and simply turned her head away weakly.
Yet I clearly saw that in the moment she turned away, a tear slipped from her eye.
I didn't think too much about it; perhaps it was just because she was touched.
But what I said was the truth. If I hadn't come back, Mingyue might have died at Yang Yi's hands today.
Of course, even though I had arrived now, our fates were still uncertain.
Soon, Yang Yi was getting closer and closer to me.
Although I felt no confidence in my heart, since I had chosen to turn back, I wouldn't retreat. Instead, I began to prepare myself mentally and carefully observed Yang Yi at that moment.
His steps seemed a bit unsteady, and there was a hint of weariness in his expression.
Though he wore a chilling smile on his face, that trace of fatigue could not be hidden away.
I couldn't help but start to speculate. Earlier, Mingyue had mentioned that inviting the Demon into one's body wasn't without its drawbacks. After the Demon left its host, there would be a backlash.
Was it possible that Yang Yi's current state was due to the Demon he had summoned leaving his body and causing a backlash?
I pondered this in my heart, my gaze fixed on Yang Yi.
Yet, even so, I knew I could never be his match; my only hope lay in summoning the Demon.
As I saw the distance between us closing rapidly, I quickly began to chant the incantation: "Heavenly Thunder Sovereign, Dragon and Tiger clash, Sun and Moon illuminate, heed my command, summon the heavenly soldiers and generals, earthly soldiers and generals, divine soldiers and generals, official soldiers and generals, Five Thunder Divine Generals, with the talisman as my guide, Urgent Command."
My speed was astonishing. By the time Yang Yi reacted, I had already reached out and unleashed a talisman that fell from the sky.
He paused for a moment, looking at me with surprise. "Good kid, so you had this all planned out."
I ignored him, lowering my head. At the moment the talisman struck, I felt a sudden heaviness wash over me, a chilling sensation enveloping my entire being.
It felt as if something had abruptly entered my body.
Cold and terrifying.
After a moment, when I raised my head again, I sensed an incredibly violent power surging within me.
That power made me feel as if I could tear a living person apart with my bare hands.
This was the reason for summoning the Demon.
Mingyue looked at me weakly once more before closing her eyes slightly and slipping into unconsciousness.
What I saw when I lifted my head was Yang Yi's grim Withered Face. He stared at me with cold eyes and said icily, "You’ve learned quickly, kid. You really managed to summon the Demon. But you underestimate me too much; don’t think that just because you’ve summoned the Demon that I can’t do anything about you or that it will save your life."
As the voice fell, he fearlessly stepped closer to me.
I, however, almost completely ignored Yang Yi's words at that moment.
The powerful force within me had turned me into a raging beast. I couldn't help but throw my head back and roar at the sky, as if trying to release the immense power inside me.
Then I charged directly at Yang Yi, swinging my terrifying fists.
Yet Yang Yi did not retreat. When my fist came crashing down towards his face, he swiftly dodged to the side and produced a Yellow Talisman from his hand.
"Thunder Break for the Warriors."
His movements were incredibly swift. As his voice echoed, the Yellow Talisman instantly struck down onto me.
A jolt coursed through my body as that rune hit me. I felt a deafening explosion in my mind, like a thunderclap, sending waves of dizziness through my head and blurring my vision.
At that moment, he conjured another identical rune in his hand and repeated the incantation. With a swift motion, he slammed that rune down onto me once more.
The previous shock had not yet subsided when another wave of tremors surged through my mind.
It felt as if something was about to be forced out of my body by him, an excruciating sensation.
He let out a cold laugh. "Did you really think summoning a Demon would allow you to contend with me? How naive."
As he spoke, he delivered a fierce kick to my body, sending me flying to the ground.
Then he advanced again, reaching into his mouth to bite his middle finger, causing blood to flow instantly. He pressed one hand against my head while the bloodied finger moved rapidly at the center of my brow.
I had a feeling that he was either writing or carving a rune.
But then I heard him coldly shout, "Whoever comes here, just roll back where you came from, or else, I will summon the thunder to strike you."
As his voice fell, he pressed his finger hard against my forehead. My mind instantly shook with a loud "boom," as if a real thunderclap had sounded.
I felt a lightness throughout my body, and I knew that the Demon I had just summoned had been expelled from my body by Yang Yi.
Everything went dark before my eyes, and the overwhelming dizziness made it impossible for me to open them again.
I felt as if I were like the bright moon, directly sinking into unconsciousness.
Yet, as I closed my eyes, I faintly saw a ray of colorful light shooting in from afar.
