The familiar aura enveloped me, reminiscent of the time Gu Chen summoned the Demon in the cave. It was just as domineering, just as terrifying—cold and powerful.
I stood there in a daze, my gaze fixed on Yang Yi.
At that moment, he lowered his head, but the feeling he exuded was entirely different, as if he had transformed into another person.
"Let's go; I'm no match for him." After a brief silence, Mingyue suddenly spoke in a grave tone.
Upon hearing this, I quickly turned to Mu Yan beside me, grabbed her hand without hesitation, and we dashed away toward the distance alongside Mingyue.
Once we rounded the corner, Mingyue kept her eyes warily on him, stepping back cautiously.
As we ran, I noticed Mingyue hadn’t followed us. Concerned, I glanced back.
That one glance sent a jolt through me again, and I pulled Mu Yan to run even faster.
In that fleeting moment when I turned back, our eyes met—Yang Yi's gaze locked onto mine.
He slightly raised his head, Evil Energy radiating from him. His eyes were filled with a bloodthirsty coldness, and a sneer played at the corners of his mouth as he instantly turned to chase after us.
We poured all our strength into running forward, but he was like a vengeful spirit, his chilling gaze never leaving us. No matter how fast we ran, we couldn’t shake him off.
Suddenly, Mingyue came to a halt.
My expression changed instantly as I exclaimed in shock, "Mingyue, what are you doing? Why did you stop?"
With Yang Yi closing in fast, our only priority should have been to escape as quickly as possible. Yet Mingyue had unexpectedly stopped in her tracks, which made me anxious.
But she remained rooted in place, seemingly having no intention of fleeing any longer. Instead, she turned around and coldly faced the increasingly close Yang Yi. "His speed is too fast. I'll stay back to hold him off; you two run ahead."
"No way."
I shook my head firmly. "That's too dangerous. If we're leaving, we leave together; if we're staying, we stay together."
Mingyue disregarded her own safety, and I certainly couldn't be a coward.
But Mingyue still shook her head. "Don't worry. He has summoned a Demon. While I'm not his match, the time limit for summoning the Demon is also finite. As long as I can delay until that time limit, there won't be any danger."
"There's a time limit?" I asked, momentarily stunned.
"Of course," Mingyue replied calmly. "Not only is there a time limit, but once the Demon leaves his body, there will definitely be some backlash against him."
As she spoke, Yang Yi had already caught up.
Mingyue didn't have time to explain further. Seeing that I still wasn't moving, she pushed me hard and said, "If you don't leave now, it will only distract me. You're no match for him."
I gritted my teeth, unable to refute Mingyue's words. In terms of skill, I didn't possess the same abilities as Mingyue or Yang Yi; I lacked their agility and speed, and I certainly didn't have the immense strength of Mingyue's Exiled Ridge Lineage.
So after glancing at Yang Yi, who was closing in on us, I could only nod firmly at Mingyue and say, "Be careful."
With that, I turned around without a moment's hesitation and grabbed Mu Yan's hand as we continued to run forward.
We ran frantically without looking back, only hearing the sounds of fierce fighting and deep, chilling roars behind us.
I didn't know how long we had been running like this, but eventually, I felt completely drained of energy. It was Mu Yan who was pulling me along as we sprinted forward, not knowing how far we had gone.
My mind was filled with worry for Mingyue as I recalled the sounds of battle behind us—the low and cold roars reminded me of Gu Chen when he had summoned the Demon in the cave.
Even when facing two Demon Emperors, she was still able to contend with them.
But what about Mingyue?
At this moment, she was alone against Yang Yi, who had also been possessed by a Demon. This was extremely dangerous for her.
So, as these thoughts crossed my mind, I suddenly broke free from Mu Yan's tight grip on my hand.
Mu Yan paused, looking at me in surprise. "Lin Hao, what are you doing?"
"I’m not leaving," I replied.
Mu Yan frowned slightly. "We’ve run far enough; we should be safe now. You should sit down and rest for a while."
I shook my head. "No, Mu Yan, I need to turn back."
"Turn back?"
Mu Yan was clearly taken aback by my words. "Why?"
I took a deep breath. "It’s definitely dangerous for Mingyue to face Yang Yi alone, so I can’t leave her by herself."
Mu Yan fell silent for a moment, but seeing the determination on my face, she nodded. "Since you've made your decision, then let’s turn back."
I shook my head again. "Not us; it’s just me."
"What do you mean, just you?" Mu Yan was once again taken aback.
I explained, "Your situation is special. Going back to face Yang Yi will only put you in more danger, so it's better if I go back alone."
"No way."
Mu Yan shook her head decisively, refusing outright.
I said, "Mu Yan, trust me this time."
Mu Yan gritted her teeth and replied, "I won't let you go back alone; that would be like sending you to your death."
"I won't be going back to die," I shook my head.
"But you—"
"But what can I do? I'm useless, right?"
Before Mu Yan could finish, I gave a self-deprecating smile and said, "Don't worry. I've thought about it for a long time. Since Yang Yi can summon a Demon, so can I. I also memorized the incantation he just recited. Besides him, I've seen my master summon a Demon once, so I'm confident."
"You mean to summon a Demon to deal with him?" Mu Yan looked at me in disbelief, clearly taken aback.
I nodded firmly. "An eye for an eye. Other than that, Yang Yi right now is simply unbeatable; Mingyue is no match for him either."
Upon hearing this, Mu Yan fell silent.
I continued, "Time is running out. You need to stay here and wait for us to come find you."
After saying that, I didn't say anything more and turned to head back.
But just as I turned around, Mu Yan reached out and grabbed my arm. I turned to look at her, and her face was still filled with worry.
I smiled gently and said softly, "Trust me, one day I will have to grow up and face some things on my own, instead of always needing someone to stand in front of me, right?"
My words left Mu Yan speechless once again, but she gradually loosened her grip on me.
I smiled slightly and stepped forward to give her a warm hug, lightly kissing her forehead.
Her forehead was cold, devoid of any warmth, but I didn’t mind at all.
She appeared indifferent, her gaze complex; it was filled with worry, as if we were parting for life and death. Yet there were no tears in her eyes because she was not an ordinary person.
Gently releasing my arms from around her, I chose not to say more. Resolutely, I turned away and ran back in the direction I had come from as fast as I could.
This time, Mu Yan obediently stood there in a daze, watching me disappear from her sight.
Only her solitary and desolate figure remained, the sound of the wind whispering around her.
