The sounds from outside made everyone's nerves tense up, their faces filled with fear. Suddenly, a scream erupted from the crowd: "A fox! A fox has climbed onto the roof!" I turned to look, and sure enough, the roof was crawling with foxes. In the darkness, their eyes glowed with an eerie green light, resembling a swarm of ghosts that sent chills down one's spine. They were everywhere, making high-pitched squeaking noises. Soon, there came loud banging and thumping from outside the door. My heart raced, and my face changed as I exclaimed, "This is bad! Those foxes are going to break in!" Just as my words fell, the foxes on the roof began jumping down one by one, diving into the crowd and launching their attack.
Old Man Gao saw this and immediately shouted, "Damn it! Let's fight these beasts!" Without hesitation, he dashed to a corner of the room, grabbed a shovel, and burst through the door. The moonlight outside was not particularly bright, but it illuminated countless pairs of green eyes. When all those eyes gathered together, they reflected a sinister glow, revealing a mass of fox shadows baring their sharp teeth and glaring fiercely at everyone inside the house.
With Old Man Gao leading the charge, everyone became enraged. In an instant, accompanied by shouts and furious roars, everyone grabbed whatever they could find—be it wooden sticks or iron shovels—anything that could be used as a weapon. They were ready to rush out and fight to the death. But at that moment, Mingyue suddenly shouted, "Stop if you don't want to die!" Her voice was loud and urgent, tinged with anger. As she spoke, she moved like an arrow released from a bow, quickly darting forward and landing right in front of the open door. Without saying a word, she firmly shut the door.
"What are you doing, girl?" The villagers inside were furious; their eyes were bloodshot as they saw Mingyue blocking the door. They couldn't help but voice their complaints as if her presence would prevent them from attacking. I was puzzled as well and rushed over to Mingyue's side, anxiously asking, "Mingyue, why are you stopping everyone from fighting? Old Man Gao is still outside!"
Mingyue shot a cold glance at everyone before replying icily, "If you all want to live, stay put inside. If you truly want to go out and fight, I assure you that none of you will survive." Her words stunned me for a moment before I asked urgently, "Do you have a plan?" She didn't explain but instead shot another cold glance behind her where several villagers were swinging their shovels and wooden sticks at a fox while others were grappling with those that had jumped down from the roof.
With no further explanation, she dashed towards them like lightning. Without hesitation, she knocked away their weapons and sent them sprawling aside. Then she grabbed several injured white-haired foxes off the ground and stood in front of the villagers to confront other foxes in the yard. Mingyue's expression was icy; she radiated an intense aura of determination. The foxes were equally defiant; they bared their teeth and brandished their sharp claws while glaring at her menacingly, pacing back and forth as if preparing for a lethal strike.
After several tense seconds of standoff, Mingyue threw the injured foxes forcefully onto the ground in front of her and coldly addressed the remaining foxes: "Back off! I don't want to kill you. Go back and tell your ancestors that there's someone here whom they cannot offend." It seemed that the foxes understood her words; after snarling for a moment, they obediently leaped back onto the roof and fled.
Seeing this made everyone inside breathe a sigh of relief. Suddenly, someone in the crowd shouted in panic—it was Liu Xiqiao's voice—her face filled with anxiety. "Old Man Gao! Old Man Gao is still outside!" I immediately recalled that Old Man Gao had rushed out with a shovel in hand earlier. With the door tightly shut now and remembering all those glowing green eyes outside, worry crept into my mind.
Mingyue didn't say anything but turned swiftly towards the door and ran over to it. When she reached it, instead of opening it, she took a leap and vaulted over the courtyard wall to jump outside. Her actions left everyone astonished but also provided some comfort amidst our fears; this was evident in the villagers' expressions.
Everyone fell silent as they stood in the courtyard watching towards the door anxiously waiting for news about Old Man Gao. Soon enough, there came a series of knocking sounds from outside that made us all shudder. I quickly asked, "Is that you, Mingyue?"
"Yes," came her voice from outside. Upon hearing her voice, one villager standing by the door exclaimed excitedly: "It's Miss Mingyue!" As he spoke, he hurriedly opened the door.
When the door swung open, there stood Mingyue smiling slightly at him as she walked back inside. However, I couldn't shake off my unease as I studied her closely; something felt off about her presence. I couldn't pinpoint what exactly was wrong at that moment but felt an underlying doubt rising within me. So I approached her cautiously and asked: "Mingyue... where's Old Man Gao?"
"Old Man Gao?" She seemed taken aback for a moment before sorrowfully replying: "I was too late; Old Man Gao is dead."
"Old Man Gao is dead?" The villager who had just opened the door looked devastated upon hearing her words; disbelief clouded his features as he stared at her in shock. Meanwhile, I discreetly pulled out a yellow talisman from my pocket and held it tightly in my hand before saying to him: "Sir, can you come over here? I need to talk to you."
"Lin Xiaodi? What is it?" He appeared lost in grief over Old Man Gao's death but still moved closer to me when I beckoned him over. As soon as he reached my side, I decisively pulled him behind me while fixing my cold gaze on Mingyue: "You are not Mingyue! Who are you really?"
