My thoughts at that moment were incredibly simple: the thickness of this wooden door must be thicker than my belly, right? But it had been shot through with a hole. If that had hit the Fox Demon, I was sure it would either be dead or severely injured. After stepping out of the room, I found the villagers outside looking at me with puzzled expressions, a bit dumbfounded. Mingyue walked over and, seeing my relaxed demeanor, asked lightly, "Have you thought of a solution?" I nodded and replied, "I should be able to deal with that Fox Demon now!" She nodded in agreement without saying much more, only adding, "Then it's up to you tonight."
At that moment, Mu Yan also approached me and gently said, "How about I go with you?" I was about to agree but glanced at Mingyue and shook my head instead. "Never mind, you stay here with Mingyue. I'll go alone." Upon hearing this, Mu Yan seemed a bit surprised but quickly gave me a thumbs up and praised, "Good luck! Now that's what a real man is." I was left speechless; so I hadn't been a real man before! Mingyue added calmly, "Don't go too far. If anything happens, I'll come help you." I nodded and said, "You must remember what you said."
Even though I had found a way to deal with the Fox Demon, facing it alone still frightened me. But as Gu Chen said, one must grow up eventually. A jade must be carved to become a gem; a person cannot mature without going through trials. What I needed now was to face these Monsters and Spirits alone. Only by experiencing danger could I truly mature and become Gu Chen's worthy disciple—perhaps even the future successor of his lineage in Taoist Nine Meridians.
The weight of responsibility felt immense on my shoulders. So when faced with challenges, I couldn't choose to retreat; all I could do was confront them and learn to bear them. Mingyue nodded and said reassuringly, "Don't worry." I didn't say anything more and took one last look at everyone in the yard and house. Facing their hopeful and excited gazes, I nodded deeply and called out to Liu Xiqiao beside me, "Sister Liu, do you have any wine? It's cold in the mountains at night; how can we warm ourselves without some wine?"
Liu Xiqiao responded excitedly to a middle-aged man in his fifties nearby, "Old Man Gao, hurry and bring Lin Xiaodi a bottle of your medicinal wine!" Old Man Gao was indeed that middle-aged man. Since his house had enough space, everyone had gathered there. Upon hearing Liu Xiqiao's request, Old Man Gao hurriedly agreed and rushed into a room to fetch a transparent bottle filled to the brim with liquid—along with some roots and white substances that looked like swollen insects.
I didn't care what it was; unscrewing the cap, I took several swigs before striding out into the yard and opening the large door directly towards the outside. Although my back was turned to them, I could feel their admiring and grateful gazes upon me. Soon after, I heard the sound of the wooden door closing behind me. A gentle breeze blew by, causing me to shiver slightly. With a wry smile, I thought that being a hero wasn't always easy!
I walked step by step toward the village entrance; the surroundings were eerily silent except for the sound of the wind. As I walked, I took more gulps of wine to bolster my courage but forgot Mingyue's warning as I ventured further away. "It's just a Fox Demon—a mere beast! When it comes here, I'll show it who's boss," I thought as I found a stone by the roadside and sat down to wait.
They say alcohol gives courage; people often claim that those who are drunk are the bravest. At that moment, I felt just that. Not long after sitting down, I suddenly heard rustling sounds. At first, I thought it was just the wind but soon realized it didn’t sound quite right. The noise came from behind me, so I quickly turned around.
What I saw made my heart race soberly: behind me was a fox as large as a wolf, crouching low and cautiously approaching me step by step. Its green eyes sparkled with intelligence as they fixed on me without blinking—as if afraid of startling me. But when our gazes met directly, its true nature revealed itself instantly; it became fierce.
Baring its teeth revealed two rows of sharp fangs like daggers. There was no denying that if it bit me even once, it could easily tear through human skin. Though I'd prepared myself for this moment—perhaps due to the alcohol—I initially felt startled but then shifted from fear to anger.
With a loud roar, I shouted: "You beast! How dare you eat humans? Let's see how I'll deal with you today!" As my voice fell, I hurled the bottle in my hand at it with all my might; however, it dodged swiftly. Then it lunged at me; I quickly sidestepped and pulled out a Yellow Talisman from my pocket.
This creature was quite intelligent; upon seeing the Yellow Talisman in my hand—originally intending to pounce again—it suddenly halted its advance. It bared its teeth but seemed wary of what I held. "You beast! So you have something to fear," I taunted boldly as a cold smile crept across my face while reciting the incantation for Purple Ghost Sword.
Just then, the fox turned tail and ran away. But as I chanted the spell, my Yellow Talisman folded into shape; forming an incantation gesture sent forth a beam of purple light directly toward the fleeing fox—piercing through its body.
The immense force propelled its body forward before crashing onto the ground. Rushing over to inspect it closely revealed that there was indeed a bloody hole in its abdomen gushing blood profusely while it emitted pitiful cries—but its green eyes glared at me fiercely as if wanting to devour me.
Seeing this made my anger boil over again; without hesitation, I kicked it hard once more—sending it flying far away while cursing under my breath: "Die already! Turns out you're not so tough after all!" As I approached again to deliver another kick—ready to send this beast off—I suddenly heard a familiar voice call from behind me: "Lin Xiaodi."
Confused, I turned around only to see Liu Xiqiao leisurely walking towards me; however her tone sounded somewhat off. After pondering briefly about what felt wrong about her voice—I realized in an instant: one word—soft! Her voice was both soft and soothing—it almost seeped into one's bones—a feeling indescribably delightful!
