The "Lark's Secret Record" is a legacy passed down through generations of the "Ancient Family," and it represents the culmination of Gu Chen's lifelong efforts. It is divided into three volumes: the Spell Section, the Feng Shui Scroll, and Demonology. The Spell Section was given to me as a handwritten manuscript by Gu Chen. Although I had not yet had the chance to study it in detail, I was already overwhelmed by the dense text that filled its pages. The content was vast and profound.
As for the Feng Shui Scroll and Demonology, Gu Chen did not provide a detailed explanation but gave me a brief introduction. The Feng Shui Scroll discusses observing the Celestial Star above and examining the Leyline below, using the natural landscape's flow to determine the auspiciousness of Feng Shui and locate dragon veins. Demonology, on the other hand, was described by Gu Chen as extremely profound. He mentioned concepts like Weather and Earthly Movements and Heavenly Fate and Earthly Energy, explaining that changes in earthly fortunes correspond to shifts in weather; likewise, celestial movements affect earthly energies. Changes in the natural environment can lead to alterations in Feng Shui conditions, causing spiritual beings within mountains and rivers to undergo transformations due to significant shifts in auspiciousness. If purity and chaos mix, terrifying entities may arise. Those who defy reason are labeled as demons! As for how to understand and judge these matters, Gu Chen merely said lightly that it was up to my own comprehension.
However, he emphasized that I should take a look at this volume first so that I could familiarize myself with these unknown creatures. His words left me puzzled, prompting me to ask him why. Gu Chen turned his gaze toward me but shifted the topic: "Xiao Lin, you are still unable to break the Demon King's Cauldron; do you know this?" I nodded and replied, "Of course I know. Master, why do you ask?" He did not answer directly but continued, "Do you know how to break it?" I forced a smile and shook my head, saying, "Master, please don't joke with me; how would I know how to break it?"
He nodded slightly and said, "Alright, I'll tell you now." With that, he turned and sat on the edge of the bed before pointing to a nearby sofa. "Sit down." I dared not hesitate and quickly took a seat, looking at him seriously. The Demon King's Cauldron had always been a heavy burden on my mind; now that Gu Chen was telling me how to break it, I certainly could not take it lightly.
"Breaking the Demon King's Cauldron is not difficult; first, you need to neutralize the Three Bloods."
"Which Three Bloods?" As soon as Gu Chen finished speaking, I hurriedly asked but received a glare from him. Embarrassed, I lowered my head and said, "Master, I'm just a bit nervous; please continue."
"Demon Fetal Essence, Nine-Tailed Fox Blood, plus one last thing: Dragon Blood." After saying this, Gu Chen glanced at me calmly. My body trembled at his mention of Dragon Blood; I could hardly believe my ears. Dragon Blood! I remembered when I first encountered Zhou Zhen; he had a dark Manticore Scale on him that was said to have been taken from a Silver Dragon. So I had already accepted that dragons existed in this world. However, the idea of extracting blood from a dragon was something I never considered or dared to attempt. Dragons! They are symbols of Chinese culture and faith—mythical beings!
"Are you shocked?" Seeing my astonishment on my face, Gu Chen asked lightly. I nodded and admitted, "Master, taking blood from a dragon... that's simply impossible!" He silently nodded in agreement: "Yes, it is indeed quite difficult. But you don't need to worry about that; leave it to me."
"Leave it to you? Are you really going to extract blood from a dragon..." I looked at Gu Chen in disbelief. Setting aside where one might find a dragon—if one could even be found—it's easy to imagine that Dragon Blood would not be easy to obtain.
I couldn't help but chuckle bitterly: "Master, let's forget about that!" Gu Chen did not dwell on this topic any longer but shifted gears: "Aside from Dragon Blood, you'll need to handle Nine-Tailed Fox Blood and Demon Fetal Essence yourself."
Handle it myself? His words left me momentarily stunned as I awkwardly replied: "But Master, I don't know anything!"
"You can learn if you don't understand. The purpose of doing these things is for your own sake; having you do them is also a form of training. Moreover, if one wishes to grow, true growth only comes through real experience." He suddenly became serious and looked at me intently: "You must remember this: do not fear danger; only through trials of life and death can one truly grow and mature. Conversely, if your master does everything for you and solves all your problems for you throughout your life, then you've wasted your life—you will end up being someone who can only talk big without any real substance."
His words left me speechless; all I could do was nod silently in agreement. Yet there was no denying that what Gu Chen said was true—I understood his reasoning well enough. Gritting my teeth with determination in my voice, I said: "Thank you for your guidance; I understand now." However, what puzzled me was what he meant by Demon Fetal Essence, so I asked him directly.
I hadn't thought much about it when asking; however, Gu Chen's answer made me frown again: "It refers to the child between you and Mu Yan—the fetus in her womb." That was Gu Chen's response; once again, I fell silent and nodded slowly.
Then he added casually: "Of course besides these Three Bloods, there are several other items needed as supplements." Hearing this made me look at him intently as I quietly awaited his next words.
He continued: "Larch wood—specifically from the Larch tree—plus Yellow Cicada shells, Giant Python Spine, Hundred-Year Lingzhi mushrooms, Silver Rune Ashes—all these should be boiled together in water over high heat for twelve hours. Then immerse yourself completely in this mixture for a day and night while consuming the Three Bloods internally for neutralization; only then can we resolve the issues with the Demon King's Cauldron. However, finding these items will be fraught with danger and will not be easy."
At this point in time, I had no concept of the dangers he spoke of but curiously asked: "Master, where should we look for these items?"
"The Taihang Mountains should have them," Gu Chen replied calmly.
After saying this he did not elaborate further but waved his hand dismissively: "Alright then; you can go now; I'm feeling tired and need some rest." Though many questions lingered in my mind upon hearing this response from him, I respectfully nodded: "Master then I'll leave you to rest." With that said, I exited his room and closed the door behind me.
Once back in my own room later that evening after reflecting on Gu Chen's words carefully—I found that when I went looking for him again he had already left. Zhou Zhen had also departed without a trace except for a note left behind. The contents were quite simple—it essentially instructed me to head to Taihang Mountains in search of those items he mentioned while stating he had gone off to find the crucial Dragon Blood himself.
However, the last line of small print on the note made my brows furrow deeply: “One must not overestimate oneself while seeking righteousness.” Even though he had left he still took care to warn me once more before departing.
