Gu Chen's words left me feeling somewhat lost, but at the same time, I was also filled with confusion.
I asked, a bit puzzled, "Master, what do you mean by coming late?"
Gu Chen's statement clearly indicated that someone had taken Mu Yan's body away beforehand, but who could that person be?
Gu Chen did not answer directly. Instead, he said calmly, "Don't worry too much. No matter who took her body, we already know the location. Tomorrow, we'll prepare and go find her."
I nodded, but I noticed that Gu Chen's expression was somewhat grim.
I didn't understand why at that moment, but when tomorrow came, I would realize why Gu Chen looked so troubled. The cave he mentioned was not as simple as I had imagined.
After leaving the Mu Family, Zhou Zhen was waiting for us outside in the car. Once we got in, he drove straight to the hotel.
While driving, Zhou Zhen spoke with a serious tone, "Xiao Lin, you were being reckless. The reason we didn't tell you when we arrived was to keep you safe from danger. Yet you still came. If we hadn't arrived in time, just think about the consequences."
Hearing this, I glanced apologetically at Gu Chen and said softly, "Master, I'm sorry. I was just a bit anxious."
Gu Chen remained silent, his expression still heavy with concern.
Upon arriving at the hotel, he instructed Zhou Zhen to prepare for something and then turned to head back to his room.
Curious, I wondered why we needed to prepare if we already knew where Mu Yan's body was located. Why not just go there directly tomorrow?
So I asked Zhou Zhen about it. He merely shook his head and said that the cave seemed complicated in some way, but he couldn't specify what made it so.
Just from its exterior appearance, the cave gave off an eerie and sinister vibe.
Zhou Zhen's words made me furrow my brow in concern. I couldn't help but ask him, "Uncle Zhou, is there anything you need me to help with?"
Zhou Zhen nodded and said, "There really is."
I replied, "Uncle Zhou, what do you want me to do?"
Zhou Zhen said, "Tomorrow morning, wake up a bit earlier and prepare some dry food and water. We’ll need to take it with us; we might be away from the hotel for a few days."
"A few days?" I was immediately puzzled.
"Yes, a few days," Zhou Zhen said calmly.
I nodded without asking further questions, and Zhou Zhen returned to his room. I went to check on He Si, and after being entangled by Xiao Juan for a while, I returned to my own room.
The next morning, I got up early and followed Zhou Zhen's instructions to buy enough bread and biscuits for a few days, along with some bottled water.
On my way back, I ran into Xiao Juan, who was looking for me. Seeing the amount of food I had bought, she was surprised and exclaimed, "Wow, Lin Hao! I didn’t realize you were such a foodie; you’re just like us girls!"
I felt a bit speechless and explained that Uncle Zhou had asked me to buy these supplies for the next few days.
Upon hearing this, Xiao Juan paused for a moment before asking, "What supplies? Where are you all going?"
So I recounted Zhou Zhen's and Gu Chen's words. Xiao Juan frowned and said, "I was wondering last night why you didn’t see that female ghost’s body when you came back. Now it makes sense. No way am I staying behind this time; I'm going with you!"
I was at a loss for words and replied, "You should ask Uncle Zhou and the master; I can't make that decision."
Just then, Zhou Zhen walked out of his room. I quickly raised the items in my hands and said, "Uncle Zhou, I've taken care of what you asked."
Zhou Zhen nodded, and then Xiao Juan immediately clung to him. However, Zhou Zhen did not agree; instead, like me, he pushed Xiao Juan towards Gu Chen.
This made Xiao Juan extremely angry, but when Gu Chen came out, she still entangled him.
Initially, Gu Chen was unwilling to let her in. First, he said that there would definitely be many unexpected dangers inside the cave.
Secondly, He Si's injuries had not healed yet, and someone needed to stay behind to take care of him.
But ultimately, unable to withstand Xiao Juan's persistent pleas, Gu Chen had no choice but to agree, leaving only Anfu behind.
Since the number of people had been decided and everything was ready, Gu Chen checked the time and said, "Let's just go."
We nodded, and then Xiao Juan and I took some food and carried two large backpacks.
Zhou Zhen and Gu Chen each brought their prepared talismans and magical tools. Zhou Zhen even held a Peach Wood Sword in his hand as we got into the car and left.
After leaving the hotel, it took about an hour's drive to reach our destination—the cave that Zhou Zhen and Gu Chen had mentioned.
At this point, we had already left the city and arrived in a remote area surrounded by mountains. We parked the car on the road, and there was still a distance to walk.
Fortunately, it wasn't too far. I helped Xiao Juan lighten her load a bit, and after walking for about ten minutes, we finally reached the entrance of the cave.
However, upon seeing the cave before me, I couldn't help but furrow my brows slightly.
In front of the cave was a lake about ten meters wide. The water was clear and deep, but it gave off an unsettling feeling of being bottomless.
Behind the lake was the cave they had mentioned. Yet this cave indeed looked as eerie and sinister as Zhou Zhen had described.
As I looked over, it resembled a giant skull.
Especially when gazing at its reflection in the lake, the sight felt even more eerie.
Both Xiao Juan and I stood there, stunned, exchanging glances.
The shock on our faces was evident. At that moment, Gu Chen calmly said, "Can you all swim? If not, figure out how to make a raft."
Saying this, he pulled out the dagger he had used last night and tossed it in front of us.
I picked up the dagger from the ground and nodded, indicating that I could swim and wouldn't need to go through that trouble.
Zhou Zhen then turned his gaze towards Xiao Juan; it was clear he could swim too. Xiao Juan frowned slightly as she looked at the lake before us.
Noticing this, I asked, "You can't swim?"
I glanced around; all I saw were barren mountains. If we needed to make a raft, we would probably have to return to where we had parked earlier. We could only use the dagger in hand to gather some branches and vines to cobble together something for the ten-meter distance.
To my surprise, Xiao Juan nodded and said she could swim. Gu Chen then instructed everyone to be careful not to get their supplies wet.
I thought for a moment and quickly replied that it was fine since the biscuits and bread we bought were packaged, so getting them wet wasn't a concern.
Gu Chen didn't say much more and directly walked over, jumping into the water without hesitation. He held his belongings high above the water's surface as he swam toward the opposite shore.
Zhou Zhen turned to look at me and Xiao Juan and said, "Let's go."
He then took some supplies from Xiao Juan's hands to help lighten her load.
I nodded and then looked at Xiao Juan, saying, "Why don't you give me everything you have left?"
She silently nodded, said okay, and then handed it to me.
I didn't think much of it and took it, my gaze fixed on the lake before me as I took a deep breath.
Although Zhou Zhen and Gu Chen were already in the water, the reflection of the Skeleton Cave shimmering in the water still felt eerie and unsettling, sending chills down my spine.
It was as if a skeleton with its mouth wide open was waiting for us to jump in and swallow us whole.
However, I felt somewhat relieved because of Zhou Zhen and Gu Chen; the ripples they created in the water made the shadow less intimidating, easing my fear.
I didn't hesitate too much; after all, it was just a distance of a few meters that I could swim across.
So after a brief moment of hesitation, I jumped right in.
But what I didn't expect was that this short distance nearly drowned me.
And the culprit behind it all was Xiao Juan.
