Seeing this, I was drenched in cold sweat, staring at her in fear, but all I could do was step back.
Suddenly, I remembered that I had stuffed a few Yellow Talismans in my pocket when I left. Although I didn't know what those runes were, they were said to ward off evil spirits. Without hesitation, I pulled out two of them and held them out in front of me.
As I raised the talismans toward her, I trembled and warned the female corpse before me, "Don't come any closer, or I won't hold back."
I wasn't sure if the talismans would work, but it was the only way I could comfort myself.
To my surprise, when she saw the two talismans in my hands, a flicker of fear seemed to cross her face, and she instinctively took a step back.
With her retreating, my courage surged instantly, and I began to move toward the door. At that moment, all I could think about was getting out of there.
But the next second, the female corpse suddenly lunged at me. Startled, I quickly threw one of the talismans at her.
However, due to my nerves, I missed entirely. Instead, she grabbed me by the throat and hurled me away with great force.
With a loud crash, I slammed against the wall and then fell hard to the ground.
I felt as if all my bones were about to shatter from that impact.
Before I could catch my breath on the floor, her figure suddenly swooped down from mid-air again, scaring me half to death. I rolled to the side just in time to avoid her.
I felt like crying; I was all alone in that room. Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen were nowhere to be found—no one could protect me—and this female corpse was so fierce. What was I supposed to do?
Suddenly, I recalled the incantation Gu Chen had taught me in Chu King's Tomb. Gritting my teeth, I thought to myself that if death was coming for me, then so be it; I'd fight back.
As she charged at me once more, I scrambled to my feet and pulled another yellow talisman from my pocket. Instantly, I began chanting: "Heaven and Earth unite, Ritual Command of Nine Directions; with this pen in hand, Ten Thousand Ghosts Concealed; Urgent Command!"
After finishing the chant, I mimicked the sword gesture from before and formed a hand seal before throwing the talisman at the female corpse.
With a loud boom.
As soon as the talisman left my hand, it shot forth like a beam of golden light and struck her directly, exploding into sparks that sent her flying backward.
Seeing this filled me with joy. Quickly, I reached into my pocket for another talisman, ready to launch another attack. My confidence began to build.
But it was clear that the female corpse had been enraged; in the moment she fell, she sprang back up like lightning, her face twisted in a grimace, veins bulging, and her gaze more ferocious as she fixed it on me.
I couldn't help but gasp in shock, tightening my grip on the talisman in my hand, feeling a bit intimidated.
After all, this was the first time I faced something like this alone. If I could run away, I would definitely choose to flee rather than stay here to confront her.
She advanced step by step towards me, and I retreated slowly, clutching the talisman tightly in my hand until I found myself cornered against the wall.
With nowhere to escape, I steeled my resolve and began chanting again, slapping the talisman forward.
In an instant, a beam of golden light struck her, but this time it only managed to push her back a few steps.
Panic surged within me as I quickly reached into my pocket for another talisman. However, as soon as my hand slipped inside, my face turned pale with dread.
At this critical moment, there were no talismans left in my pocket.
The female corpse seemed to sense my despair; a chilling smile crept across her grotesque face as she advanced towards me with even more audacity.
All I could do was helplessly watch the few talismans I had scattered earlier behind her.
She was almost upon me now.
I suddenly forgot about the lack of talismans in my hand and began chanting spells aloud in an attempt to intimidate her.
But it had no effect whatsoever. The next moment, her hands clamped tightly around my throat, lifting me high off the ground until I was suspended in mid-air.
I struggled desperately, making muffled sounds and calling for help.
Just when I thought I was about to suffocate to death, the door suddenly burst open with a loud bang. A figure rushed in swiftly right after.
Before that figure even reached the doorway, I heard them begin chanting spells rapidly. The next moment, a golden beam shot forth and slammed into the female corpse, sending her flying away.
I too fell heavily to the ground with a dull thud.
I covered my neck with both hands, coughing violently, but I knew my life was spared this time because it was none other than Gu Chen who rushed in at the critical moment.
After sending the female corpse flying, he wore a grim expression and walked directly to my side.
I got up from the ground and looked at him, feeling a bit wronged as I called out, "Master."
He seemed not to notice me at all, ignoring my presence as he coldly stared at the female corpse before him.
The corpse climbed back to its feet, its gaze fierce as it glared at Gu Chen, becoming even more menacing. With a roar, it charged toward him.
I instinctively backed away toward Gu Chen, but seeing his unwavering demeanor as he stood his ground eased my anxiety somewhat.
Then, just as the female corpse reached him, Gu Chen swiftly pulled something from his hand. To my surprise, it wasn’t a talisman this time.
It was a dagger.
Just as I was puzzled by this, he swiftly drew the dagger across his palm, and in an instant, blood stained the blade.
At that moment, he unleashed a thunderous kick directly into the female corpse, sending her crashing to the ground. Without losing momentum, Gu Chen leaped onto her back, kneeling down to pin her firmly.
Then, with lightning speed, he reached out and twisted her head sharply. The hand holding the dagger moved like a flash across the corpse's neck.
Instantly, the fierce demeanor of the female corpse vanished; she clutched her neck with both hands and began to writhe in pain.
Only then did Gu Chen stand up, wiping the blood from the dagger onto his clothes before sheathing it.
Confused, I ran over to him and stole a glance at the corpse.
To my astonishment, a deep wound had split open on her neck, oozing thick black blood that flowed out continuously.
In no time at all, she collapsed to the ground and lay still.
Seeing this, I exclaimed in shock, "Master, is she... is she human or ghost? Why did you use a dagger instead of a talisman to subdue her?"
Gu Chen shot me a glare and coldly said, "She is neither a ghost nor a human; she is merely a corpse controlled by someone using unorthodox methods. This is somewhat similar to our Taoist Nine Meridians' Corpse Control Technique."
A corpse, unorthodox methods. I was even more confused, as I had no understanding of what Gu Chen referred to as unorthodox methods and the Corpse Control Technique.
However, another thought suddenly crossed my mind, and I quickly asked, "By the way, Master, what about Mu Yan? Has her corpse been taken away by you?"
"No," Gu Chen shook his head directly.
"No?" My heart sank as I asked, "Then where is it?"
Gu Chen's tone grew serious as he replied, "In a cave. We were a step too late."
