As we left the hotel, He Si was still unconscious on the bed. Gu Chen had asked Anfu to stay behind, and we followed Mingyue as she led the way to the place she mentioned.
Throughout the journey, I felt a mix of anxiety and curiosity about what this place could be and whether Mu Yan was truly there.
I wanted to ask Mingyue, but when I saw her cold expression, I ultimately held back.
With Anfu remaining behind, Zhou Zhen took charge of the car. Following Mingyue's designated route, Zhou Zhen soon furrowed his brow and said with some surprise, "Senior Gu, it seems we've arrived at Qingyang District. Just ahead is Qingyang Palace."
Gu Chen slightly raised his head, gazing ahead through the car window with a frown. Although he didn’t speak, it was clear he had noticed as well.
Qingyang Palace is one of the famous attractions in Chengdu, which was easy to recognize.
Hearing this, I felt confused and couldn't help but glance at Mingyue, who sat beside me with her aloof demeanor. "Mingyue, where exactly are you taking us?"
She shot me a cold glance and replied, "Do you want to find Mu Yan?"
Mu Yan.
Her words stunned me momentarily, and my expression changed as I excitedly asked, "You know where Mu Yan is?"
She shook her head and said, "I don't know."
"Don't know?"
I was at a loss for words; my earlier excitement instantly faded. I said somewhat irritably, "Then why did you bring it up?"
To my complaint, she didn’t seem angry but instead paused before saying, "But I know another Mu Yan."
Another Mu Yan?
What does that mean?
Her statement left me momentarily stunned again; even Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen were taken aback. Gu Chen frowned slightly and asked in a deep voice, "Mingyue, you seemed curious about the name Mu Yan when we first mentioned it. What do you mean by bringing up Mu Yan again now?"
Mingyue glanced at me briefly before turning to Gu Chen and said lightly, "I can tell that your skills are profound, so you must have some understanding of the fundamentals of the Exiled Ridge Lineage."
Upon hearing this, Gu Chen frowned slightly but nodded in agreement. "The Exiled Ridge Lineage is quite similar to the Tomb Robber and Moving Mountains schools; its techniques can be summarized in four words: observe, listen, inquire, and cut, divided into four characters and eight methods."
I looked on in confusion, my brow furrowed as I watched Gu Chen and Mingyue, unable to grasp the meaning behind their words.
At that moment, Mingyue nodded and continued, "That's right. I am very sensitive to various scents, and from him, I detect a familiar smell."
Though I was puzzled, it was clear that her last statement was directed at me since her gaze was fixed on me.
This made me pause for a moment. A familiar smell? I looked over myself carefully and took a deep breath to sniff; apart from a faint scent of sweat, I couldn't identify any other odor on me.
Moreover, this scent was something she recognized. I turned to her with a puzzled expression.
Gu Chen also frowned at this and looked at Mingyue, saying calmly, "Please continue."
"Muyan."
Mingyue spoke those two syllables lightly.
Muyan—again with the name Mu Yan.
I couldn't help but feel anxious. "What exactly do you want to say?"
She always kept things so cryptic that it left me feeling unsettled.
Even Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen appeared puzzled by her words, their gazes shifting toward Mingyue as they frowned slightly.
Mingyue's expression remained unchanged as she continued, "I can smell Mu Yan on him."
"Which Mu Yan? Is it the one you know?" I looked at her with sudden excitement.
She had mentioned Mu Yan before, but at that time, we thought the Mu Yan she knew was not the same person we were talking about.
However, her bringing it up again made me think twice.
Moreover, she said she could smell Mu Yan on me, which only intensified my anxiety.
Her gaze, which seemed somewhat cold, swept over me once more as she said lightly, "Perhaps the Mu Yan we are talking about is indeed the same person."
The same person.
That couldn't be possible.
Before I could respond, Zhou Zhen suddenly slammed on the brakes and turned to Mingyue, who was sitting in the back. "Miss Mingyue, perhaps you don't know yet, but the Mu Yan we're talking about is actually not human at all."
"Yes, she's a ghost," Gu Chen added with a slight nod, emphasizing his point.
I stared intently at Mingyue without speaking, waiting for her response.
She seemed unfazed by Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen's comments and said, "Perhaps she is not human, but maybe she is— a living dead."
"Living dead?"
Her words caught me off guard again, and my brows furrowed deeper. I couldn't help but grit my teeth and ask, "What do you mean by that? What is a living dead? Can you please clarify instead of beating around the bush?"
"You care about her," she glanced at me, responding with a non sequitur.
I felt a surge of anger and retorted, "Of course I do! If I didn't care about her, I wouldn't have come here."
"Xiao Lin, how can you speak like that?" Zhou Zhen interjected, noticing my tone was a bit confrontational. Gu Chen shot me a glare but remained silent.
I calmed down slightly, lowering my head and saying nothing, though I was genuinely anxious inside.
Mingyue seemed unfazed; she gave me a meaningful look before turning her gaze forward and said lightly, "You should park the car near the entrance of Qingyang Palace and keep an eye out for someone."
"Who?" Gu Chen asked, frowning slightly.
"The One-Sided Diviner, known for his accurate predictions," Mingyue replied calmly.
"A fortune teller?" I couldn't help but interject.
"Yes, his name is Liu Xin. You just need to find him to locate the Mu Yan I mentioned. Then you will understand what I've been saying," she answered indifferently.
Upon hearing this, Gu Chen couldn't help but scoff, "How can we trust the words of a wandering sorcerer?"
Clearly, Gu Chen held some disdain for the person Mingyue mentioned; even Zhou Zhen seemed to share the sentiment.
However, this was understandable. When it came to fortune-telling and divination, both Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen could probably deduce a thing or two themselves.
While these practices might not strictly belong to the realm of Maoshan Techniques, they had dabbled in it enough to understand some aspects. Therefore, if they truly needed a fortune teller, they wouldn't resort to seeking help from strangers on the street.
Mingyue didn't seem to mind their skepticism; after finishing her explanation, she said no more and simply opened the car door to get out.
I frowned slightly and asked, "What are you doing?"
She replied, "I've said everything I needed to say. The rest is up to you to find out. Whether you believe it or not is your choice."
With that, she closed the car door without hesitation and turned to walk away.
Watching her retreating figure, Gu Chen furrowed his brow but remained silent. Zhou Zhen glanced at Gu Chen and asked, "Senior Gu, should we check out what she mentioned?"
Upon hearing this, Gu Chen's brow furrowed again, clearly reluctant.
However, I was deeply troubled by Mingyue's words and quickly suggested, "Master, why don't we go see that person she mentioned?"
Only then did Gu Chen nod in agreement and said to Zhou Zhen, "Let's go take a look then."
