Gu Chen spoke calmly, but anyone could see the gravity on his face. As Zhou Zhen and I walked along, we couldn't contain our curiosity any longer.
So, I asked again what he meant by the severed dragon vein he had just mentioned.
Gu Chen sighed and glanced at Zhou Zhen, acknowledging that Zhou Zhen was indeed correct. The location of this ancient tomb did not seem like a place where a dragon vein would be found.
The towering peaks that held dominion over the world did not possess the grandeur of true feng shui landscapes.
However, all of this was a result of later alterations. Human destruction had ruined this precious feng shui site, creating a situation akin to a trapped dragon.
As for who had damaged this feng shui site and used the Seven Soul-Settling Nails to confine those within the tomb, that was not something we needed to worry about at the moment.
Thus, Gu Chen chose not to elaborate further, as he himself was unaware. After returning, Gu Chen had us find Chen Sheng and the police officer Captain Xie.
He gathered everyone together and briefly explained the seriousness of the situation, urging everyone to leave as quickly as possible—preferably before nightfall.
Gu Chen's words caused everyone's expressions to change. Chen Sheng and his group were relatively unfazed; they had no doubts about Gu Chen's words and nodded in agreement, saying they would leave after lunch.
However, the police officers and those so-called archaeologists were not so easily convinced. Although they were shaken by Gu Chen's words and still reeling from yesterday's incident with the Dried Corpse, these old stubborn ones remained skeptical of us. Despite their fear, they still hesitated.
After a moment of silence, an older man stepped forward. He looked at Gu Chen and us before saying, "I won't leave. Even if there is something in that ancient tomb, there are definitely valuable artifacts inside. I have to stay here."
Upon hearing this, Gu Chen's brows furrowed tightly together as he shot him a cold glance. "Are you afraid that I, Gu Chen, will keep the artifacts for myself?"
The old man merely snorted in response, remaining silent. From his demeanor, it was clear he was resolute in his decision to stay.
The person seemed to hold considerable authority among the experts. When he refused to leave, the remaining experts quickly followed suit, deciding not to depart either.
This caused Gu Chen's expression to darken significantly.
Captain Xie noticed Gu Chen's grim demeanor and saw that the experts were unwilling to leave, leaving him at a loss.
To be honest, after last night's events, Captain Xie genuinely believed Gu Chen's words and was reluctant to stay here.
However, he had come along to protect these experts and was responsible for maintaining order at the scene. Although, according to Gu Chen's request, there were no personnel assigned to guard the ancient tomb at the moment, it would be inappropriate for him to leave while the experts remained.
With a helpless chuckle, he turned to the elderly man and suggested, "Professor Wang, why don't we leave for now? We can return once Master Gu has dealt with the situation here."
Professor Wang, the elderly man from earlier, responded sharply, "Captain Xie, don't tell me you're scared."
Seeing that his kind suggestion was met with hostility from Professor Wang, Captain Xie felt his patience wearing thin. He retorted coldly, "So what if I am? To be honest, I am scared. Can you blame me for being afraid after over ten people died?"
Upon hearing this, Professor Wang snorted but fell silent.
The other police officers and a few experts exchanged uneasy glances; clearly, Captain Xie's words had struck a chord of fear within them as well.
After a brief pause, Captain Xie said, "Fine, if you want to stay, then stay. I’ll accompany you. The rest of you should finish your lunch and head back to the station."
With that, he huffed and turned away without saying another word.
Gu Chen furrowed his brow deeply and finally let out a cold snort. "If you choose not to leave, don’t blame me for not warning you when something happens."
Coldly tossing out a sentence, Gu Chen waved his hand at me, Zhou Zhen, and Anfu, saying, "Let's go prepare some things."
After lunch, Anfu and I made another trip to Old Three Villages. This time, however, we weren't there to gather information; we were searching for purebred black dogs.
Gu Chen mentioned that a large amount of Black Dog Blood was needed, so the two of us practically ran all over Old Three Villages. In the end, we only found two purebred black dogs and brought them back alive.
By the time we returned, it was already evening, and Chen Sheng and the others had left.
However, the group of experts led by Professor Wang remained. Ultimately, Captain Xie had no choice but to send a large number of police officers back to the station. The workers hired for the excavation were also unwilling to stay and had long since left.
Counting the remaining people, I found there were fifteen in total: five experts led by Professor Wang, six police officers led by Captain Xie, and four of us—Gu Chen, Zhou Zhen, Anfu, and myself—making exactly fifteen.
Although their presence annoyed Gu Chen somewhat, he still instructed Captain Xie to arrange for everyone to stay as close together as possible in a few nearby tents for safety's sake.
He then issued a very serious warning to everyone: once it got dark, they should stay inside and not wander around.
Everyone nodded obediently in response to this. However, after night fell, something unexpected happened.
That night, I couldn't sleep because I was preoccupied with thoughts of Mu Yan. I had no idea what time it was but kept hearing what sounded like music outside—a faint melody that seemed like someone was playing a flute, drifting through the air.
The sound was somewhat vague but clear enough upon closer listening. I couldn't help but feel curious and sat up in bed. I was sharing a tent with Gu Chen, Zhou Zhen, and Anfu.
I considered waking them up but saw they were all asleep. So I decided to go out and take a look; surely nothing too dangerous would happen.
As I left the work shed, the sound of the flute grew clearer in my ears. The melody was melancholic, and for some reason, it stirred a deep sadness within me that was hard to articulate.
Unconsciously, I found myself following the source of the flute's sound, my steps quickening.
In the darkness, I moved forward step by step, oblivious to my surroundings, with only one thought in my mind: I wanted to see the owner of that flute.
Soon, I felt the sound drawing nearer, slowly coming into view.
After taking a few more steps, I frowned slightly and stopped. In front of me, on the grass, there was a figure crouched down, facing away from me.
I stretched my neck and squinted to get a better look at the person.
At that moment, the flute's music ceased, and an eerie silence enveloped the area; it was so quiet that I could only hear my own breathing.
Tentatively, I asked, "Who... who are you?"
The figure remained still and did not respond. Frowning again, I took two more steps forward.
Suddenly, they turned their head sharply towards me, startling me. With a look of disbelief, they exclaimed, "It's you!"
