I was engulfed in despair, trapped in endless fear; for I knew that these skeletons suddenly crawling out of the ground must have been conjured by Gu Chen.
The yellow talismans floated down, and coupled with the incantation he had just recited, that cold snort indicated that Gu Chen was indeed angered by me.
I had actually struck him with a punch; this time, I was surely doomed.
In an instant, I was surrounded by an overwhelming chill and suffocation, feeling as if I were about to lose consciousness.
At that moment, I gradually forgot my fear, thinking that if I were to die, then so be it. At least I had tried my best. Even if I couldn't stop He Si from attacking Mu Yan, it would be a death without regrets. After all, I had done what a man should do.
But just as I began to close my eyes slowly, Gu Chen approached. I vaguely heard him reciting another incantation, and then I felt the chilling aura around me diminish significantly.
Just moments ago, it felt as though my neck was tightly gripped by a pair of dead branches, suffocating me; now my breathing gradually became smoother.
Opening my eyes, I saw Gu Chen standing beside me, holding a talisman folded into a long strip, pinched between his middle finger and thumb, resting flat against his chest.
As my gaze swept around, I noticed that the skeletons which had crawled up from the ground were now perfectly arranged around me, motionless.
Looking at the talisman in Gu Chen's hand, I realized he was using it along with his incantations to control these skeletons.
I gritted my teeth and took a faltering step forward, intending to snatch the talisman from him.
But in the next moment, with a flick of his finger, the previously quiet skeletons surged toward me, enclosing me in their midst.
Gu Chen snorted coldly and said, "You dare to strike me? You have quite the nerve. Do you know that even without lifting a finger, I have many ways to make you suffer?"
I nodded weakly and replied, "Then go ahead and kill me."
"You’re not afraid of death?" Gu Chen asked casually.
"I am afraid," I said helplessly. "But if you want me dead, what can I do?"
"Mm."
Gu Chen nodded and said, "You're right. However, I'll give you one more chance. Don't get involved with that female ghost named Mu Yan anymore. I can let go of the fact that you just hit me. What do you say?"
I rolled my eyes at him in disbelief and shook my head. "Stop talking nonsense. I must have been blind to take someone as fickle as you as my master. Do whatever you want with me; as long as I'm alive, I won't just stand by."
What I said wasn't out of any great righteousness or fearlessness of death, but just as I mentioned earlier—if I were to disregard Mu Yan's safety, I simply couldn't do it.
Human hearts are made of flesh. Mu Yan has saved me time and again; if I knew she was in danger and didn't step up, then I would truly be unworthy of being human.
"Alright, you've got some guts. I'll grant you that," Gu Chen replied coldly, seemingly too lazy to argue further. With a flick of his hand, he pointed at me, and instantly, a skeleton beside me lunged forward and grabbed my neck.
A chilling pain shot through me as the bony fingers pierced my skin, blood flowing freely.
"I'm asking you one last time."
Gu Chen spoke again, but I weakly shook my head; silence was the best answer.
Seeing my state, Gu Chen's expression darkened, but he said no more. Coldly, he uttered, "Then go die."
His words felt like a death sentence. In an instant, the suffocating pain returned, and I couldn't help but bitterly smile inside.
I had thought that finding Gu Chen in Shandong was a stroke of luck, but little did I know that it not only implicated Mu Yan but also cost me my life.
I gently closed my eyes. Regret washed over me as I silently bid farewell to my parents. My consciousness began to fade, and then I fell into complete unconsciousness.
I thought this time I was surely doomed, but when I awoke again, I found myself sprawled across Gu Chen's back. In the pitch-black night, he resembled a galloping camel, bumping forward at a rapid pace.
Lying on his back, I glanced around at the surroundings. Although it was too dark to see clearly, I could tell that I had already left the ancient tomb.
I lowered my head and looked at Gu Chen, who was running forward with me on his back. Although I was puzzled about why I hadn't died and how I had left the ancient tomb, I still asked in a somewhat cold tone, "Where is this?"
"You little brat, you're awake," Gu Chen replied somewhat irritably.
To be honest, even though I was currently relying on him, I had no good feelings toward him at all. Hearing his words, I ignored him and quietly waited for his next response.
Noticing my silence, he spoke again, "Aren't you trying to save Mu Yan? Of course, this is on the way back."
"On the way back?"
I was suddenly taken aback, unable to believe what I was hearing. "You... weren't you determined to kill Mu Yan? Why are you saying this now?"
Before I could finish my sentence, Gu Chen interrupted me. He said gruffly, "I'm already old; it's not easy to find a disciple like you. Yet you insist on opposing me and don't even fear death. Do you expect me to wait another ten or eight years to find a suitable disciple?"
Alright, I understood Gu Chen's words. My heart felt a slight warmth.
It seemed that Gu Chen didn't truly intend to kill me; even if he had targets, they were only aimed at Mu Yan.
While he might be somewhat stubborn about this, it wasn't entirely his fault. After all, as someone who practiced Maoshan Techniques and dealt with ghosts and demons, it was part of his duty.
If it weren't for me, he wouldn't have gone through so much trouble or even taken a punch from me because of this situation.
Thinking of this made me feel a bit sad. I wasn't as angry with Gu Chen anymore; in fact, a hint of guilt arose within me. My voice softened as I said, "Master, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have hit you."
As Gu Chen continued to run forward with me on his back, he shook his head and said, "It's lucky it's you; if it were someone else, just try calling them out. Who would dare touch even a finger of Gu Chen? This time I'll let it slide, but if there's a next time, just wait and see how I'll deal with you."
I repeatedly assured him, "There definitely won't be a next time."
Gu Chen snorted coldly as if pretending to be angry.
I couldn't help but laugh, "Master, it turns out you're not as cold and bad as I imagined."
Hearing this, Gu Chen slightly paused, turned his head to look at me, and asked, "Am I really that cold and bad?"
"Uh." I shook my head repeatedly. "You're quite good, Master."
"Then that's settled." Gu Chen snorted lightly.
I said, "Master, let me down. I can walk by myself."
Gu Chen replied, "I think it's better if you don't. At your speed, you won't keep up. If we get back late and something happens to Mu Yan, you'll be the one causing trouble for me. I won't have any way to deal with it."
Upon hearing this, I silently nodded, my heart suddenly feeling heavy.
But in the end, even with Gu Chen's pace and speed of running, we still arrived a step too late.
The third update is here. Although it's a bit late, I managed to get it in before midnight. Thank you all for your support. After reading, everyone should get some rest. See you tomorrow.
