For the past three days, Gu Chen had been busy with matters concerning the ancient tomb, not mentioning Mu Yan even once, which relieved me greatly.
During these three days, I had also officially become his disciple, performing the customary rites and offering him tea as a sign of respect.
However, I found it strange that he seemed in no hurry to enter the tomb; instead, he had Anfu stationed there, which puzzled me.
If he had been preparing during the first two days, then on this third day, he had little to do and appeared to be waiting for something.
It wasn't until a man named He Si arrived in the evening that I realized he was waiting for someone.
He Si looked to be a few years older than me, probably around twenty-seven or twenty-eight. He appeared mature and composed.
Curiosity stirred within me about this He Si, who could command Gu Chen's attention.
I glanced at Zhou Zhen and quietly asked if he knew who He Si was. Zhou Zhen shook his head, saying he didn't know him either, but anyone invited by Senior Gu must be someone significant.
I nodded in agreement. At that moment, Gu Chen pointed to He Si and introduced him to us: "Xiao Si is a disciple of the Qingwei Sect, specializing in thunder techniques. Although he is not from the Taoist Nine Meridians, his skills are formidable."
Upon hearing this, Zhou Zhen and I exchanged knowing glances. I had heard of the Qingwei Sect before; it was said to have originated during the Northern Song Dynasty, but I hadn't expected it to still exist today.
Gu Chen then pointed at me and Zhou Zhen while introducing us to He Si: "These two are my newly accepted disciples—one is my apprentice, and the other is a friend."
Upon hearing this, He Si greeted Zhou Zhen and me warmly, acknowledging our introduction. His gaze settled on me as he smiled and said, "To be accepted as a disciple by Senior Gu means your future achievements will surely be remarkable."
I quickly smiled back and replied politely, "Fourth Brother, you flatter me. I will definitely rely on your guidance and teachings in the future."
Although I addressed him as Xiao Si, I didn't dare to be presumptuous. Regardless of He Si's abilities, just considering his age, calling him Fourth Brother was quite appropriate.
Sure enough, when He Si heard this, he burst into laughter and said cheerfully, "You know how to flatter, kid. Alright, I'll accept you as my little brother."
I nodded and smiled without saying anything.
At that moment, Gu Chen spoke up, "Alright, since Xiao Si is here, you all should get ready. We're heading down to the ancient tomb tonight."
"Senior Gu, is Xiao Lin going too?" Zhou Zhen couldn't help but ask.
"Of course he's going. A jade stone must be polished to become a gem," Gu Chen said, glancing at me before turning to prepare for our descent.
I didn't think much of it; if I was going, then so be it. With Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen by my side, along with the somewhat mysterious He Si, I figured we wouldn't encounter any danger.
After they finished their preparations, we arrived at the location of the ancient tomb. I followed them directly down into the tomb while Anfu remained outside to guard.
As we descended from the pit, the light suddenly dimmed significantly. A chilling aura rushed towards me, causing me to shiver involuntarily.
At that moment, Gu Chen, who had gone down first, turned on his flashlight and illuminated the area ahead. With the beam of light guiding us, I noticed that the space in front seemed to open up.
Upon entering from the pit, we found ourselves facing a wide tomb entrance made of bluestone. It stood several meters high and wide, covered in moss and looking quite damp.
Without hesitation, I squeezed through the entrance, followed closely by Zhou Zhen and He Si.
"Master, is this the passageway of the ancient tomb?" I asked in awe as I directed my flashlight forward.
The tomb passage, illuminated by the light, appeared to be very long, at least a hundred meters in length, and it extended downward like an endless abyss, exuding a chilling and eerie atmosphere. My voice echoed in the silence, adding to the unsettling ambiance that sent shivers down my spine.
Gu Chen nodded and said, "That's right. Stay close to me."
I quickly agreed; in a place like this, it was only wise to stick close.
However, after walking for a while, I felt compelled to ask, "By the way, Master, I remember that a few days ago when Uncle Zhou and I went to find Fatty, he mentioned there was a stone door here. Where is that door?"
A sense of dread washed over me as I recalled Fatty saying that A-Xing and the others encountered ghosts after opening that stone door. The thought of whatever it was that Fatty described—something with many hands—made my scalp tingle.
Gu Chen glanced at me lightly and pointed ahead. "The end up there."
"Are we going in there soon?" I asked tentatively.
He Si chimed in from behind, "Xiao Lin, you really lack courage. How will you keep up with Senior Gu in the future?"
I felt a bit embarrassed at his words and glanced at Gu Chen. He remained silent, but his expression clearly indicated his agreement with He Si's comment.
I quickly defended myself, saying, "I'm just curious; I'm not scared."
He Si smiled but said nothing further.
We continued to move forward slowly. I looked around; everyone was quiet. The only sounds were our footsteps echoing in the tomb passage, creating an eerily silent atmosphere.
I examined the surroundings closely. The passage seemed to be constructed of blue stone bricks, much like the entrance of the tomb, covered in moss. In some places, droplets of water fell from above; if one landed on my face, it felt icy and piercing.
“Caw caw caw.”
Suddenly, my nerves tensed up, and I turned to Gu Chen with a terrified expression, saying, “Master, what is that sound?”
“It’s the sound of a ghost calling,” Gu Chen replied calmly, seemingly unconcerned. Upon hearing this, my face changed dramatically.
I said nervously, “That’s not right, Master. According to Fatty, as long as we don’t open that stone door ahead, there shouldn’t be any ghosts.”
Gu Chen replied lightly, “The ghost isn’t here; it’s just trying to deceive people and drive them to madness.”
“Oh, so that’s how it is.” I relaxed slightly at his words but remained on edge as we continued forward together.
We weren’t walking very fast. After about ten minutes, I felt we had descended several dozen meters underground. The eerie and sinister atmosphere grew stronger.
Soon, we reached the end of the ancient tomb, where a stone wall blocked our way. He Si stepped forward at that moment, shining his flashlight and carefully feeling around.
Zhou Zhen and I stood beside Gu Chen, watching quietly. I felt a bit anxious, thinking this must be the stone door that Fatty and A-Xing had opened.
Before long, He Si’s gaze fell on the wall to the right of the stone door. There was a slightly rusted dark steel plate with an oval-shaped protrusion on it. He placed his hand on it and twisted it gently.
Suddenly, a heavy humming sound echoed through the air. He Si released his hand, and the stone door in front of us shook violently before slowly rising upward.
“Creak creak.”
As the stone door swung open, the lanterns in our hands flickered erratically, emitting a series of crackling sounds as if they were being interfered with by some unseen force.
A chilling gust of air rushed toward us, and I instinctively turned my terrified gaze toward Gu Chen and the others.
Suddenly, all the lights went out, plunging us into an endless darkness.
"Master! Uncle Zhou!"
I couldn't help but call out urgently, reaching forward, but my hands grasped nothing but empty air. This only heightened my fear; I remembered they were right beside me.
But why couldn't I reach them now?
I was terrified, feeling as if a monstrous creature loomed before me, ready to swallow me whole.
Abruptly, the lights flickered back on in the darkness, igniting a spark of excitement within me. But that exhilaration was quickly extinguished, replaced by fear and a scream.
The first thing that caught my eye was a pale yet oddly flushed face. It was a deeply contradictory sight—so frightfully white yet vibrant like that of a living person, with cheeks unnaturally full as if filled with water.
However, compared to this bizarre fear, the strange smile curling at her lips and her ambiguous gaze sent me into deeper terror and despair.
Just as she lunged toward me, I screamed in panic. At that moment, I suddenly heard Gu Chen's cold snort.
I looked up to see He Si behind her, one hand resting on the corpse before us. With a swift pull, Gu Chen produced a Blue Rune from his hand and flicked it directly onto her.
A sudden scream escaped her lips, and a spray of blood splattered across my face, cold and gruesome, making me feel nauseous to the point of nearly vomiting.
The corpse vanished without a trace. I wiped my eyes and finally noticed Gu Chen and He Si standing beside me, while Zhou Zhen was off to the side, shining a flashlight in my direction.
I stared at the three of them in a daze, still shaken as I asked, "Master, Uncle Zhou, Fourth Brother, what just happened?"
Gu Chen remained silent, but He Si chuckled and said, "It's nothing. Just a Blood Corpse. It was an illusion created by a ghostly trick. But with us here, you won't come to any harm."
"Blood Corpse?"
I frowned slightly, still feeling a chill run down my spine. Although He Si's words were true—having them around meant I was safe—I was still terrified.
He Si nodded. "Yes, it's a Blood Corpse. It's likely that the top layer of this tomb was smeared with a lot of Vermilion, which caused the formation of the Blood Corpse."
Even though He Si explained how the Blood Corpse came to be, I didn't fully understand it. He didn't elaborate further either; he simply told me to wipe my face before we all stepped through the stone door together.
Inside the stone door was a spacious area. I nervously followed behind them, glancing around. At that moment, I noticed Gu Chen suddenly examining the wall beside us.
Upon closer inspection, there were slight crevices on either side of the wall. Gu Chen touched it with his hand and then his gaze fell upon a Bronze Lion on the adjacent wall. He said, "This is likely another burial chamber."
He Si looked at Gu Chen; they exchanged a nod.
Then Gu Chen suddenly called out to me, "Xiao Lin, come here."
Hearing this, I quickly shouted for Master and took a couple of steps closer to stand beside him. Sister of the Dark Wife was fierce.
At that moment, Gu Chen grasped the Bronze Lion on the wall and gently pressed down. Instantly, the stone door before us opened to reveal yet another burial chamber.
However, before I had time to be surprised, I felt a sharp pain in my neck, and then I was kicked from behind by He Si, followed closely by Gu Chen being pushed in as well.
In the next moment, with a loud crash, the stone door of the tomb slammed shut.
At that moment, I didn’t think about anything else; I instinctively reached for my neck and immediately panicked because the jade pendant that had been there was gone.
He Si. I suddenly realized that it must have been taken by He Si just now.
But in the next instant, an even more terrifying thought crossed my mind, causing my face to turn pale as I turned to look at Gu Chen standing beside me, unable to believe what I was about to say: “You… you actually lied to me.”
