My first reaction was that the person who had just appeared beside me was not human at all.
When I turned around again to look behind me, that figure had already vanished without a trace.
Anfu cast a cold glance at me before turning and walking over to Zhou Zhen.
I stood there momentarily stunned, my gaze fixed on the corpse that Zhou Zhen had slung over his back. Thinking back to the figure I had just seen, a chill ran down my spine, and I couldn't help but gasp.
Startled, I shrank my neck and hurriedly followed Anfu towards Zhou Zhen.
When I reached Zhou Zhen's side, Gu Chen had also crawled out of the pit. They both looked rather pale.
Zhou Zhen had placed the corpse on the ground. Looking at its face, I could confirm it was indeed a dead person, and it looked exactly like the one I had just seen.
However, it seemed this person had only died recently. Feeling a wave of dread, I looked at Zhou Zhen and asked, "Uncle Zhou, who is this person and how did he end up down here?"
While fear gripped me, curiosity also bubbled up inside. I couldn't understand why Zhou Zhen would carry a dead body from below.
Zhou Zhen replied, "This person died down there; it seems he hasn't been dead long. The Yin Qi is too heavy down there, and with the humidity being high, the body doesn't decompose easily. Senior Gu was worried that it might cause a corpse transformation later on, so he asked me to bring it out and burn it."
"I see," I nodded but still felt curious. "But how did this person get in? Did he dig this entrance?" I pointed at the pit in front of us.
If that were the case, then perhaps this deceased individual was a Grave Robber who failed to find any treasures and instead lost his life.
Zhou Zhen remained silent, but Gu Chen snorted coldly and said, "Wanting to dig for treasure without considering the dangers—this kind of place is not somewhere he could just come to. Losing his life was entirely his own doing."
He patted the dirt off his clothes and turned to Anfu beside him, saying, "Anfu, are you scared?"
Anfu shook his head and replied, "Not scared."
"Good."
Gu Chen nodded, his expression becoming serious as he pointed to the pit in front of them. "If you're not scared, how about you stay here and guard it for the night?"
Anfu nodded in agreement. Gu Chen continued, "But remember one thing: just stay here. No matter what sounds come from inside, do not go in."
Upon hearing this, Anfu nodded again.
Zhou Zhen looked at Gu Chen, frowning slightly, unable to hold back a question. "Senior Gu, are you worried that someone might come in?"
Gu Chen nodded gravely. "This place is very sinister; it’s probably far worse than we can imagine. Whether someone barges in recklessly or enters intentionally, if they lack some skills, they’re likely to face dire consequences. Having Anfu guard here is much safer."
"There are ghosts inside?" I couldn't help but glance at the corpse on the ground and asked.
"Ghosts?"
Gu Chen couldn't help but let out a cold laugh and shot me a glance. "What are ghosts? There are far more terrifying things in this world than ghosts."
More terrifying things than ghosts.
Gu Chen's words made my heart sink. Zhou Zhen had mentioned something similar on the way here, but what could be more frightening than ghosts? At that moment, I had no idea.
Zhou Zhen waved his hand and said, "Xiao Lin, come help lift him back."
"Carry him back."
I glanced at Zhou Zhen, then at the corpse on the ground, feeling somewhat reluctant.
Zhou Zhen said, "If we don't carry him back, how are we going to deal with him here?"
Hearing this, I frowned slightly. Zhou Zhen had a point; there was no dry wood around, and using those living branches would be difficult to ignite without gasoline.
So, I gritted my teeth. Although I was hesitant and a bit scared, I walked over to help Zhou Zhen lift the body from both ends.
Then, leaving only Anfu to guard the spot, the three of us—Gu Chen, Zhou Zhen, and I—returned with the corpse.
After we got back to the factory, Gu Chen first found Chen Sheng and asked if he recognized the body we brought back. Chen Sheng shook his head, indicating he didn't know.
However, upon hearing that another corpse had been brought back, aside from Heizi and the others who were already dead, the few living people rushed over to take a look. Aunt Qiu and Uncle Cai, who were cooking, immediately recognized it.
Aunt Qiu pointed at the corpse on the ground and said to Uncle Cai beside her, "Old Cai, isn't this that A-Xing from the village?"
"A-Xing?"
Uncle Cai's brows furrowed slightly upon hearing this. He leaned in closer for a better look and exclaimed in surprise, "Oh, it really is A-Xing."
"Who is A-Xing?" Gu Chen asked immediately.
Uncle Cai quickly replied, "A-Xing is from Old Three Villages. He seems to have a good relationship with that Pork Seller. We often saw them together when my wife and I went to buy pork."
"The Pork Seller"
Gu Chen listened, murmuring softly as if lost in thought, his expression subtly darkening.
"Yeah, that Chubby Kid is a nice guy. He always picks out the best pork for me," Uncle Cai said, not understanding the situation, and couldn't help but praise the pork seller, Fatty.
"What’s his name?" Gu Chen asked again.
Uncle Cai and Aunt Qiu shook their heads. "We don’t know; we just call him Fatty."
Gu Chen nodded, then turned his gaze to Zhou Zhen, who looked puzzled. "Senior Gu, is there a problem?"
Gu Chen frowned slightly and shook his head. He looked at Uncle Cai and Aunt Qiu. "Here’s the plan: you two prepare some food for us first, and then make a bit more. Zhou Zhen, you take these two to gather some dry firewood and bring some food up the mountain to Anfu."
Upon hearing this, Zhou Zhen, Uncle Cai, and Aunt Qiu all nodded in agreement. Aunt Qiu and Uncle Cai went off to prepare the meal.
However, after Gu Chen mentioned it, I suddenly felt my stomach rumble; I realized we hadn’t eaten anything yet—what a predicament!
Soon enough, Aunt Qiu and Uncle Cai had prepared the meal. After we finished eating, Zhou Zhen took two people with him to carry the dry firewood they had prepared while we were eating, along with the food for Anfu.
As they were leaving, I curiously asked Zhou Zhen why they needed the firewood. He explained that the place had heavy Yin Qi and was dimly lit; bringing firewood for Anfu would also serve as a source of light.
The next morning at dawn, Gu Chen instructed Zhou Zhen to take me along with Uncle Cai and Aunt Qiu to find that pork seller, Fatty. They also planned to look for A-Xing's family to inform them of A-Xing's death and handle the body directly.
As for himself, he said he needed to prepare some things, draw some necessary runes, and take care of A-Xing's remains.
As I walked down the road, carrying Uncle Cai and Aunt Qiu on my back, I couldn't help but share with Zhou Zhen what had happened last night with the jade pendant. I asked him if it meant that Mu Yan was about to awaken.
He nodded and said it was possible, but it was also likely that she hadn't fully recovered yet. Therefore, when I was in danger, the pendant only vibrated as a warning without her actually appearing.
Thinking it over, I agreed. Otherwise, based on Mu Yan's past behavior, she would have shown up instantly.
However, Zhou Zhen warned me seriously. He said that if Mu Yan did awaken, I must ensure she leaves quickly. Under no circumstances should Gu Chen see her or even know that she had been by my side all along. Otherwise, given Gu Chen's temperament, he might take action against Mu Yan.
At that point, no one would be able to stop him.
