When I first heard what Xiao Juan said, I had already begun to speculate in my mind. However, I never expected that the two would actually be connected, and this revelation made my face turn extremely grim.
At that moment, Mao Guoxue stepped forward and asked, "Did Xiao Juan tell you?"
"Yes."
I nodded but then looked at Zhou Zhen with some confusion and asked, "Uncle Zhou, the Zombie that the Cloud Ghost General turned into was controlled by that Mysterious Man in Black last time and taken away using a corpse-controlling technique. How could it appear here again?"
Zhou Zhen frowned at my words, seemingly puzzled. "I'm just as confused. However, I did sense a familiar aura there, and this aura is indeed the malevolence from the Zombie that the Cloud Ghost General transformed into. It just seems even more violent now."
"So you mean it's stronger now?" Upon hearing this, I shuddered, and my expression grew even darker.
Seeing my troubled face, Mao Guoxue said, "Xiao Lin, you can just rest easy in bed. You don't need to worry about the Zombie. Although it's powerful, I still have ways to deal with it."
Mao Shiba, Mao Guoxue's nephew, might not be able to handle the Zombie transformed from the Cloud Ghost General, but he could hold on for a while. Given Mao Guoxue's profound abilities, his assurance provided me with some comfort.
Zhou Zhen added, "We're just going back to get some things and then we'll head over. We need to dig it out from underground before dark and eliminate it."
I said, "Uncle Zhou, I want to go see too."
Zhou Zhen guessed it was because I was worried and shook his head. "You can rest assured. Even though it's a Jumping Zombie, dealing with it should be easy for Guoxue Brother. Besides, we’ll dig it out before dark; we just need to pay attention to one thing: we can burn it afterward."
Hearing this, I looked at Mao Guoxue again. He nodded at me, which finally eased my mind.
However, since I only saw the two of them, I became curious and asked, "What about Grandma Jiang?"
"Grandma Jiang?" Mao Guoxue shot me an annoyed look.
I was puzzled. "What? Did something happen to Grandma Jiang?"
Mao Guoxue shook his head. "Of course not."
"That's..."
Mao Guoxue answered the question indirectly, somewhat annoyed, "Do you want Grandma Jiang to see what just happened between you and Xiao Juan?"
I immediately felt embarrassed, my face turning red from his words, and I hurried to explain.
Seeing my awkwardness, Mao Guoxue laughed heartily, "Alright, I was just joking. We only came back to grab a few things before heading over, so we left Grandma Jiang there to avoid any trouble."
"I see," I nodded. After that, Mao Guoxue and Zhou Zhen left together.
Not long after they left, Xiao Juan ran over again and asked if Mao Guoxue and Zhou Zhen had asked me anything. I replied sarcastically, "So you can be scared too?"
Xiao Juan didn’t argue; she just kept teasing me. I shook my head and said no, which made her stop. However, she was considerate enough to know I was unwell and didn’t linger to bother me. Instead, she said she would bring me dinner later.
I waited until dark, but Mao Guoxue and Uncle Zhou still hadn’t returned. I felt a bit anxious. According to what they had said earlier, they were supposed to dig out the Jumping Zombie before dark and burn it. By now, they should have been back.
Yet it was already dark, and there was still no sign of them.
Before long, Xiao Juan brought over the food. I couldn’t help but ask her if Grandma Jiang had returned. She shook her head and said no.
Then I asked if Mao Guoxue and Zhou Zhen were back yet. She shook her head again and said that Mao Shiba had gone to check the situation.
Hearing this made me even more worried. Could it be that even Mao Guoxue couldn’t handle the Jumping Zombie transformed from the Cloud Ghost General?
Seeing me fidgeting like an ant on a hot pan, Xiao Juan placed the food in front of me and said, "Don’t worry too much; just eat your meal. With Teacher Mao and Grandma around, nothing will go wrong."
I shook my head and said, "Xiao Juan, do you know where they are? Why don’t you take me there to see?"
Xiao Juan rolled her eyes at me and said, "What can you do there? Lin Hao, you staring at me won’t help either. Teacher Mao and Uncle Zhou told me to stay here and watch over you."
"Did they say I couldn't go over?" I asked, somewhat annoyed.
"No," Xiao Juan replied, taken aback. She shook her head and said, "They just said you were sick and told me to keep an eye on you."
"Exactly, they didn't say I couldn't go," I pointed out.
Seeing that Xiao Juan seemed a bit swayed, I quickly added, "Besides, it's already late and they still haven't come back. Aren't you worried about your grandmother?"
After saying this, I deliberately glanced at Xiao Juan's face and noticed a flicker of hesitation. I knew that mentioning Grandma Jiang made her worry.
Seizing the moment, I encouraged her with more words until she finally nodded and said, "Finish your meal first. If something happens later, I'm afraid you won't have the strength to keep up."
I nodded in agreement. What she said was true; after lying down all day and taking medicine, although my cold had improved a lot and my strength had returned somewhat, I still felt weak. If I didn't eat, I'd be even weaker and wouldn't be able to run away in case of danger. In that situation, I'd only be putting myself at risk.
Without further ado, I picked up the bowl and started shoveling the rice into my mouth. I quickly finished the whole bowl and then put on my shoes before leaving with Xiao Juan.
Xiao Juan found an electric scooter and took me away from Upper Clear Academy.
At first, there were still a few pedestrians on the road, but soon we ventured into more secluded areas where people became increasingly scarce. Only the occasional car sped by us.
Xiao Juan rode the scooter while I sat behind her. I wasn't sure if it was the wind or something else, but I suddenly felt a chill that sent goosebumps all over my body.
I huddled my shoulders, sensing something was off; after all, it was summer.
I asked Xiao Juan if she felt cold or noticed anything strange. She didn't respond but turned back to smile at me.
I frowned slightly; her smile seemed odd and very awkward.
Before I could think much more about it, a blinding light appeared ahead of us, accompanied by a series of urgent honks echoing in my ears as a large truck loaded with goods sped toward us from the opposite side of the road.
Just as it seemed we were about to collide, Xiao Juan rode her electric scooter without any intention of stopping; in fact, she even accelerated. This made me scream out in panic.
Then came a loud crash as the electric scooter was knocked to the ground by a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. In that instant, I felt as if someone had pulled me back with lightning speed, yanking me down to the ground.
My head hit the pavement, and I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me.
I quickly struggled to get up, repeatedly calling out Xiao Juan's name because just moments ago, I had witnessed her being struck by that oncoming truck.
"Xiao Juan, please don't be hurt! You must be okay!" I muttered anxiously.
"Lin Hao."
At that moment, a familiar voice filled with anger came from behind me.
When I turned around, I was taken aback, my brow furrowing slightly. There stood Xiao Juan right behind me, her face flushed with rage as she glared at me.
How could this be? I had just seen her get knocked down!
But if she wasn't Xiao Juan, then who could she be?
