As my voice faded, that greenish entity, resembling a Will-o'-the-wisp, hovered in the air not far from us. Its speed was astonishing. What on earth was this thing that moved so quickly? Even more terrifyingly, it only paused for a moment before drifting away like a gust of wind. As it moved, all the Wandering Spirits and Wild Ghosts around it, including the Yin Soldiers, instantly vanished. However, I could see clearly that they hadn't disappeared; instead, they transformed into wisps of black gas and floated toward the greenish entity like a Will-o'-the-wisp. What was happening? While I was astonished, confusion washed over me; the scene before me was simply too bizarre. At that moment, Xiao Juan exclaimed excitedly, “Ghostly Gu Worm.” Ghostly Gu Worm... I looked at Xiao Juan with confusion; it was clear she recognized this entity, or perhaps it was indeed the so-called Ghostly Gu Worm? Xiao Juan seemed to have lost her earlier tension and pointed excitedly at the greenish entity, saying, “Ghostly Gu Worm! It’s the Ghostly Gu Worm sent by Grandma Jiang to save us.”
“Grandma Jiang sent that to save us?” I frowned in doubt.
“Yes,” Xiao Juan nodded. “Now we’re safe.” Hearing this, my gaze shifted back to the greenish entity—oh right, the Ghostly Gu Worm. Although this thing was sent by Grandma Jiang, could it really be effective? Meanwhile, the Wandering Spirits and Wild Ghosts in the distance had noticed its presence and were rushing toward it frantically. Xiao Juan said not to worry and just wait to see what would happen. I felt puzzled about where Xiao Juan's confidence came from and curiously asked, “What exactly is a Ghostly Gu Worm? Is it also a type of Gu Worm?”
Xiao Juan shook her head and replied, “Strictly speaking, it can no longer be called a Gu Worm!”
“Can’t be called a Gu Worm?” I asked in confusion. “But didn’t you just call it a Ghostly Gu Worm?” I was baffled by Xiao Juan’s words.
Xiao Juan explained, “Ghostly Gu Worm is its name, but now it can actually be referred to as a Gu Demon or Ghostly Gu Demon.”
Gu Demon... As I pondered this, I suddenly exclaimed in shock, “Are you saying this Gu Worm has turned into a monster?”
Xiao Juan teased without giving a direct answer and said, “Just watch closely.” I nodded; after all, those Wandering Spirits and Wild Ghosts were too preoccupied with the green entity to pay attention to us. In mid-air, the entity flickered like a Will-o'-the-wisp; strangely enough, any Wandering Spirits and Wild Ghosts that approached it vanished instantly. Eventually, none dared to come near it anymore. Suddenly, it took the initiative to charge at those Wandering Spirits and Wild Ghosts.
Like a whirlwind, it swept through them; Yin Soldiers and Wandering Spirits continuously disappeared in its wake. The Yin Soldier Officer fighting alongside Mu Yan also noticed this strange presence and roared angrily before abandoning Mu Yan to charge directly at it.
“Mu Yan! Come here quickly!” Mu Yan had been struggling against the Yin Soldier Officer; now that he was free from his grasp, I called out urgently. Not far away, Mu Yan nodded and awkwardly floated behind me. I asked with concern, “Are you okay?”
She shook her head and replied softly, “I’m fine.” Then she stood silently beside me. Xiao Juan shot me a disdainful glance and muttered under her breath, “Beast! Not even letting ghosts off.” Her voice was low but clear enough for me to hear; I felt speechless but chose not to respond and focused entirely on the Ghostly Gu Worm and the Yin Soldier Officer.
At this moment, the Yin Soldier Officer and the Ghostly Gu Worm were locked in combat. The powerful Yin Soldiers comparable to Ghost Generals exuded an intense Killing Intent; although they repeatedly struck the Ghostly Gu Worm without injuring it, their relentless attacks only fueled its anger as it roared while swinging its arms.
With each blow that sent it flying away again and again, the Ghostly Gu Worm emitted an eerie screech. Its cry sounded strange—somewhat like a Dragon Roar but deeper and less resonant; instead, it resembled the hissing of a snake. Suddenly, after being struck away once more, it circled around us in an instant. This time I finally saw its true form and was taken aback.
In that fleeting moment as it zipped past like a gust of wind, I saw sharp appendages like blades but resembling arms sweep away all nearby Wandering Spirits and Yin Soldiers. Those looked like centipede legs. Centipede? Just as this thought crossed my mind and I looked up again, I noticed that the body of the Yin Soldier Officer had been ensnared by something long.
That thing had a serpentine shape yet wasn’t quite a snake. The reason I thought so was because its appearance was horrifying—it made my scalp tingle with fear. I never imagined such terrifying yet bizarre creatures existed in this world. It had a snake-like body with centipede legs but an even stranger head resembling both a snake's head and a dragon's head; its length exceeded ten feet—taller than an average person.
“What... what on earth is that?” I couldn’t help but mumble to Xiao Juan.
Xiao Juan replied proudly, “I told you! It’s the Ghostly Gu Worm; but you can also call it a Gu Demon.”
“You mean Grandma Jiang raised this thing?” I asked incredulously.
“Yes,” Xiao Juan nodded. “To cultivate such a worm isn’t easy; you need to select twelve highly toxic insects and let them devour each other.”
I interjected involuntarily: “So you’re saying they kill each other?”
Xiao Juan confirmed: “Yes! The stronger ones consume the weaker ones until only one remains. Then for three years you feed various poisonous insects daily for it to become a Ghostly Gu Worm; however, Grandma Jiang’s Ghostly Gu Worm isn’t that simple.”
I frowned and asked: “What do you mean?”
Xiao Juan explained: “As I said before—this Ghostly Gu Worm can already be called a Gu Demon.” Seeing my puzzled expression, she clarified: “While the Ghostly Gu Worm is powerful too, it's not strong enough to devour Spirit Entities yet; this particular one took Grandma Jiang over ten years of effort to cultivate into what it is now.”
“I see,” I nodded slowly but still found it hard to accept—at least somewhat unsettling—to think someone would raise such terrifying creatures.
While Xiao Juan and I were talking, footsteps echoed from deeper within the forest followed by bright beams of light from flashlights approaching us. I wondered who would come out here at such an hour when there were so many Wandering Spirits and Wild Ghosts around—it seemed incredibly unsafe!
However, upon hearing those footsteps, Xiao Juan’s face lit up with joy as she said: “It must be Grandma Jiang coming!” Sure enough, just as she finished speaking, an old woman hunched over with a cane emerged from the trees holding a flashlight—it was none other than Grandma Jiang!
“Grandma! You finally made it!” Upon seeing Grandma Jiang, Xiao Juan rushed toward her excitedly. I quickly called out for Grandma Jiang as well and hurried forward to support her.
Grandma Jiang looked affectionately at Xiao Juan and said: “If I hadn’t come soon enough what would happen if my precious granddaughter got into trouble?”
“Uh-huh! I knew Grandma loves me most!” Xiao Juan replied playfully.
Grandma Jiang smiled as she patted her head but then turned her icy gaze toward Mu Yan standing behind me and coldly asked: “You Spirit Entity have quite some nerve standing here openly while I'm here—do you want your soul scattered?”
I immediately panicked and quickly explained: “Grandma Jiang! Don’t misunderstand! She just came to save us!”
“Save you?” Grandma Jiang frowned at Xiao Juan.
At that moment Xiao Juan wore a mischievous smile on her face as she feigned innocence: “Hmph! She was bullying me just now!”
“What? Someone dared bully my granddaughter?” Upon hearing this Grandma Jiang’s demeanor turned icy.
I grew anxious because although Grandma Jiang wasn’t particularly skilled in authentic Metaphysical Arts or Maoshan Daoism—being part of Nine Families of Dao Veins—her creation of something like the Ghostly Gu Worm hinted at formidable abilities. If she decided to take action against Mu Yan... The thought terrified me as I cast pleading glances at Xiao Juan.
Xiao Juan had only been joking earlier but seeing my distress didn’t press further; she coldly huffed at Mu Yan before turning back to Grandma Jiang saying: “Alright Grandma; actually she did delay things which allowed your Gu Worm to arrive.”
“Fine,” Grandma Jiang grumbled reluctantly. “In that case you ghost girl should leave quickly—I’ll spare you this time.”
Mu Yan remained unmoved merely staring coldly at both Grandma Jiang and Xiao Juan—clearly unimpressed by their threats.
Knowing Mu Yan’s aloof nature made me worry about whether Grandma Jiang would truly let her go unharmed so I hurriedly revealed Mu Yan’s identity explaining she was carrying my Demon Fetus.
Only then did Grandma Jiang look surprised at her before nodding without further intent to trouble her.
“Uncle Zhou?” Suddenly someone patted my shoulder; turning around revealed Zhou Zhen standing behind me looking somewhat mysterious.
He didn’t speak but gestured for me not to say anything while casting wary glances at Grandma Jiang and Xiao Juan before signaling for me to follow him ahead.
Furrowing my brow in confusion about why Zhou Zhen approached now with such caution regarding Grandma Jiang and Xiao Juan yet still nodded following him forward—I walked several steps when Zhou Zhen whispered urgently: “That’s not Grandma Jiang or Xiao Juan—not even Mu Yan either—you’ve fallen under someone else’s illusion! Don’t speak or look back—just follow closely behind me!”
