After arriving at Upper Clear Academy, Mao Shiba led the way while Zhou Zhen walked beside him, and I followed closely behind them until we reached a living room.
“Uncle Zhou, please sit.”
Mao Shiba said to Zhou Zhen, who nodded and took a seat, clearly familiar with the place as if he had been there many times before.
At that moment, Mao Shiba glanced at me and said, “Don’t be polite, make yourself comfortable. It’s just like being at my home here.”
Curiously, I asked, “Is this academy run by your family?”
Mao Shiba shook his head and replied, “Partly yes, partly no.”
“Partly yes, partly no?” I echoed, intrigued. “What does that mean?”
Zhou Zhen then spoke up, “Xiao Lin, it’s a long story. I’ll explain it to you later.” He pointed at Mao Shiba and continued, “Eighteen, you should hurry and find your Second Uncle and Yang Yidao. Have them come over to check on Xiao Lin.”
Upon hearing this, Mao Shiba nodded and said, “Alright, I’ll go right now.” He then turned and dashed out of the room.
Once Mao Shiba left, Zhou Zhen turned to me and explained, “Upper Clear Academy was established by three families; it’s not solely run by Mao Shiba’s family. However, the other two families are also quite remarkable.”
I nodded slightly without speaking, listening attentively.
Zhou Zhen continued, “These two families are like Mao Shiba’s family in that they belong to the Taoist Nine Meridians lineage. One of them is the Yang Family, which is skilled in Taoist Techniques and Feng Shui just like the Mao Family. The other is the Jiang Family, which is somewhat peculiar as they specialize in Gu Technique.”
I had a vague understanding of what Zhou Zhen referred to as the Taoist Nine Meridians; it essentially represented nine unique families.
As for Gu Technique, Zhou Zhen seemed quite mysterious about it and asked me, “Xiao Lin, do you know what Gu Technique is?”
I shook my head and said, "I don't know."
Zhou Zhen replied, "Well then, let me explain it to you briefly."
He spoke little about the Gu Technique, but it was shrouded in mystery. He mentioned that the Gu Technique could also be referred to as a form of ancient sorcery, passed down through generations since ancient times.
Most Gu are actually cultivated using various poisonous insects. As for the more advanced types of Gu, Zhou Zhen shook his head, indicating that he too did not understand how they were formed.
In his words, the Gu Technique is very mysterious; if a practitioner wants to harm someone, it is quite simple because they can cast their spells invisibly.
Although Zhou Zhen shared little information, it still sent chills down my spine. I asked with some fear, "If it's such a harmful thing, why would anyone want to learn it? How has it been passed down to this day?"
Zhou Zhen replied, "You're mistaken. The Gu Technique is not solely for harming others. Like Mausoleum Taoism, it can both harm and heal. The difference lies in whether the practitioner has malicious intent."
"The reason I brought you here is not only to help you resolve the Eight Character Death Curse but also to see if we can use his Jiang Family's Gu Technique to absorb the Yin Qi within you."
I frowned slightly and asked, "How can you absorb it using the Gu Technique?"
Zhou Zhen replied calmly, "It's simple: release the Gu."
My face turned pale instantly as I said in disbelief, "You mean to put a Gu Worm inside my body?"
Zhou Zhen nodded and said, "Exactly."
Damn it.
I couldn't help but curse inwardly. Setting aside what kind of poisonous creatures those Gu Worms were, just the thought of putting a living insect into my body was enough to make me feel nauseous.
"How do you even put it in? Do you just stuff it in through your mouth?"
I could hardly bear to think any further.
Noticing my pale expression, Zhou Zhen quickly explained, "The reason for placing the Gu inside your body is so that the Gu Worm can enter your heart meridian and absorb the Yin Qi that has invaded it. This way, your heart can start beating again."
His explanation seemed somewhat reasonable, but just the thought of a living creature wriggling around inside me made me feel nauseous.
I reached for my chest and felt a wave of despair wash over me. No heartbeat. If this continued, I might not even know whether I was alive or dead.
Especially since time was short; if someone discovered this, they would surely see me as a monster.
At that point, wanting to live a normal life would become nothing but a distant dream.
While I was caught in this intense internal struggle, Mao Shiba returned, followed by a middle-aged man in a dark suit. He appeared to be in his forties. Although he looked refined in his suit, there was an air of sharp authority about him.
Mao Shiba entered first and pointed at the man behind him, saying, "Uncle Zhou, my Second Uncle is here."
Zhou Zhen stood up respectfully and cupped his fists in greeting, saying, "Guoxue Brother."
The man in the suit was indeed Mao Shiba's Second Uncle. Upon seeing Zhou Zhen, he instantly smiled and hurried over to shake Zhou Zhen's hand. "So it's Zhou Brother who has come! Why didn't you let me know in advance? I could have come out to greet you."
Zhou Zhen quickly shook his head. "Guoxue Brother, you're too polite. I actually came here because I need your help with something."
Mao Shiba's Second Uncle replied, "You don't need to say that. Eighteen has already briefly explained the situation to me. If there's anything I can assist with, I will certainly help."
"Then I appreciate Guoxue Brother's assistance," Zhou Zhen said.
Zhou Zhen quickly nodded and then looked at me, pointing to Mao Shiba's Second Uncle. "Xiao Lin, this is Eighteen's Second Uncle, Mao Guoxue. You can just call him Second Uncle."
Upon hearing this, I respectfully called out, "Second Uncle."
Then Zhou Zhen pointed at me and introduced to Mao Guoxue, "Guoxue Brother, this is Xiao Lin. I mainly wanted to ask you to take a look at him."
Mao Guoxue nodded, his gaze now fixed on me.
After carefully examining me, he frowned and said, "Severely damaged heart pulse, Eight Character Death Curse, Demon King's Cauldron... indeed very troublesome."
"Second Uncle, is there no way to save him?"
Hearing this, my face immediately turned even worse as I anxiously asked.
He smiled slightly and replied, "It's alright. Although it's troublesome, it's not without a solution. Since Zhou Zhen brought you here, you can rest assured. I will find a way."
Upon hearing this, I quickly nodded in gratitude, feeling a bit more at ease.
Zhou Zhen then curiously asked, "Oh, Guoxue Brother, where is everyone? What about Yang and Grandma Jiang?"
Mao Guoxue laughed and said, "Yang Yi has been in seclusion for some reason lately. He hasn't been managing the students' classes much either; I've been handling everything alone. As for Grandma Jiang, well, you know she only has a few classes each week. She comes when it's time and leaves right after; she never stays around here for long."
"I see. But Grandma Jiang's personality is indeed a bit reclusive," Zhou Zhen remarked, clearly having some understanding of Grandma Jiang.
Mao Guoxue nodded and said, "Zhou Brother, let's sit down and discuss his current situation properly."
With that, Mao Guoxue gestured for me to sit down as well. I quickly nodded obediently and took a seat. Zhou Zhen sat beside me, and then I listened as the two of them began to discuss my current condition.
In the end, Mao Guoxue said to me, "Xiao Lin, the most important thing right now is to find a way to expel the Yin Qi from your body. After that, we need to figure out who placed the Eight Character Death Curse on you. Only then can we address the root of the problem. You have no objections, right?"
What objections could I possibly have? It was a pointless question. I quickly nodded and said, "I will follow the arrangements of Second Uncle and Uncle Zhou."
"Good," Mao Guoxue replied with a nod. He then called out to Mao Shiba in a commanding tone, "Eighteen, go to Grandma Jiang's place and ask her to come over. Just tell her we need her help to save someone."
Mao Shiba seemed somewhat reluctant upon hearing this. "Second Uncle, it's almost noon. Why don't I wait until after lunch to go?"
Mao Guoxue scolded him sharply, "Do you think Grandma Jiang won't feed you when you get there?"
"But Grandma Jiang's place is full of bugs; I can't eat there," Mao Shiba replied with a look of exasperation.
Unable to tolerate it any longer, Mao Guoxue let out a cold snort and reprimanded him, "I told you to go, so go! Stop with the nonsense."
With a glare from Mao Guoxue, Mao Shiba was so frightened that he turned and ran out.
