They returned to the intersection of three paths, and the biggest dilemma facing Ye Huan and Yu Wuxia was which road to take to delve deeper underground. No matter which path they chose, if they made the wrong decision, it could lead them to a place from which they would never return. Of course, there was also the possibility that Ye Huan and Yu Wuxia could find a clear route directly to the core of the Eight Gates of Immortal Trapping Formation. However, ultimately, that chance could only be one in three.
"Lady Luck, where have you been lately? Why don't you come out and help us?"
With a grim expression facing the three paths ahead, Ye Huan resorted to his last option—blindly choosing a path. Gritting his teeth, he lifted his leg to step into one of the roads. Just then, Yu Wuxia noticed Ye Huan's movement and hurriedly stopped him, asking, "Ye Huan, what are you doing? Do you know which path leads to the core of the Eight Gates of Immortal Trapping Formation?"
"If I knew, would I need you to tell me?"
Ye Huan rolled his eyes at Yu Wuxia. If he truly knew which path led to the core of the Eight Gates of Immortal Trapping Formation, he wouldn’t have followed Yu Wuxia back to this entrance in the first place; there was no need to waste time here.
"Impulsive! You are being too reckless. We are trapped here; one wrong step could mean we never get out again. Even if you don’t think about yourself, can’t you think about those around you?"
Adopting a scholarly demeanor, Yu Wuxia couldn’t help but lecture Ye Huan after hearing his words. Yet, Ye Huan was well aware of what Yu Wuxia was saying. The real question was how they could find the path leading to the core of the Eight Gates of Immortal Trapping Formation.
Lowering his head in silence, Ye Huan stared at the three stone steps leading underground for a long time without knowing how to respond to Yu Wuxia. After some observation, he soon made a discovery: on one of the dusty stone steps lay a footprint. Judging by its size, it was only about three inches long; it seemed likely that it belonged to a woman.
"Ye Huan... Ye Huan, are you even listening to me?"
After receiving no response for a while, Yu Wuxia thought Ye Huan was distracted and became furious. But just as he finished speaking, he noticed where Ye Huan's gaze was fixed. This prompted him to crouch down and murmur, "What is this..."
"You see it too; someone has passed through here recently, and it must have been a woman. This is undoubtedly a path leading to the core of the Eight Gates of Immortal Trapping Formation."
Still fixated on the footprints of the woman on the blue stone steps, Ye Huan felt a flicker of doubt arise within him as he shared his speculation with Yu Wuxia. After all, in Yuxu Palace, aside from Yuxiang'er, Yu Wuxia's adopted daughter, there seemed to be no other women present. Even Zhao Ziyu had only arrived later. Moreover, if Ye Huan himself was unaware of this place, how could Zhao Ziyu possibly know? In other words, this woman could not be anyone Ye Huan recognized and was likely not even from Yuxu Palace.
Consider this: a person who is not from Yuxu Palace arrives at the heart of the Guardian Array. What does that imply? It suggests that Yuxu Palace has long been targeted by someone. To put it bluntly, aside from the Heavenly Dragon Sect, there might be other enemies of Yuxu Palace that Ye Huan was completely unaware of.
"I don't think so."
Yu Wuxia directly refuted Ye Huan's words. As soon as he finished speaking, he crouched down to carefully examine the ground. After a thorough inspection, he quickly discovered something amiss. Just as Ye Huan had said, these were indeed the footprints of a woman. In Yuxu Palace, aside from Yuxiang'er, there were no other women present. However, it was precisely this point that raised questions for Yu Wuxia, prompting him to share his deductions with Ye Huan.
"Look at this footprint; it's only about three inches long. It definitely belongs to a woman. But think about it—are there any other women in Yuxu Palace besides Yuxiang'er? If I'm not mistaken, this must be the work of someone who intruded into Yuxu Palace to investigate its secrets. Furthermore, these footprints only show signs of entering but none of leaving, indicating that the person has not come back out after going in. Clearly, this does not lead to the heart of the Yuxu Palace array."
"That seems to make sense..."
Furrowing his brow slightly, Ye Huan pondered Yu Wuxia's words and looked down at the ground where indeed only traces of entry remained. He couldn't help but admire Yu Wuxia's experience; he considered matters far more thoroughly than Ye Huan did. Fortunately, neither of them had entered yet; if they had, it was likely that not only would Ye Huan perish inside, but even Yu Wuxia, the current leader of Yuxu Palace, would meet his end there.
Having ruled out one passageway, Ye Huan began to carefully observe the other two passages after his earlier discovery. However, as time passed, he had to admit with frustration that these two sets of blue stone steps leading underground had likely seen no one pass through in recent years and left behind no useful clues.
"What should we do next? Aside from the previous passage we sent out through, these remaining two have no traces at all."
Confused, he turned his gaze toward Yu Wuxia. Considering safety and based on previous examples, Ye Huan thought it best to consult Yu Wuxia first. To his surprise, when Yu Wuxia finally responded, it only fueled Ye Huan's urge to strangle him. Yu Wuxia simply said, "Forget it; I can't do anything about it now. We'll leave it to fate."
As soon as he finished speaking, Yu Wuxia stepped into one of the passages leading underground. This made Ye Huan genuinely question who had just lectured him for so long—was Yu Wuxia merely looking for trouble?
Shaking his head with a bitter smile and unable to make sense of it all, Ye Huan decided not to dwell on it further and followed closely behind Yu Wuxia as they descended the right-side blue stone steps. They quickly advanced downwards for over a hundred meters. However, just like the previous stretch of road they had traversed with trepidation toward the heart of the array, they found themselves facing three new passageways that were indistinguishable from those before…
"Dammit, is this ever going to end? Elder Yu, did you bring me to some kind of illusion?"
Ye Huan looked strangely at the three stone staircases before him, which were almost identical to the fork in the path he had seen earlier. He was curious if he had fallen into some strange trick while traversing that passage and was now stuck in a loop.
"No, it's not an illusion. Look at these three forks; when we came here earlier, there were footprints left on one of the paths, right? Now look at these three forks in front of us—there are no footprints here, which means we have been moving forward all along. We just have to make another choice."
Yu Wuxia observed Ye Huan's expression closely and quickly identified the differences between this fork and the previous one. He made sure to share all his findings with Ye Huan. However, while Yu Wuxia spoke lightly about it, Ye Huan didn’t think it was a good thing to have to make another choice between life and death after finally deciding on a path.
