Chapter 218: Strong Acid Swamp
Since ancient times, countless professionals have sought to venture into the heart of the Northern Liang Mountain Range to witness the legendary Tenth-Level Beast. However, without exception, they all met their demise—either at the hands of the many magical beasts within the Northern Liang Mountain Range or in the circular swamps surrounding its center.
"This is no ordinary swamp..."
Standing before a swamp on the southern side of the Northern Liang Mountain Range, Ye Huan gazed at the faint purple mist rising from it. At first glance, he sensed that this area was far from simple. In fact, when Ye Huan tossed a stone into the swamp, his earlier suspicions were confirmed. He could see with his own eyes that as soon as the stone hit the surface, a large amount of purple mist enveloped it, rapidly shrinking it until it vanished completely.
Noticing Ye Huan's actions and seeing that the stone had disappeared without even sinking into the swamp, the knowledgeable Ye Luo stopped Ye Huan from impulsively throwing in an M4A1 assault rifle to test the waters. He spoke up, "No need to try; it's acid. Judging by the situation, this should be a Strong Acid Swamp."
"Strong Acid Swamp?"
Ye Huan looked at Ye Luo in confusion. He had heard of Strong Acid Swamps before, but as far as he knew, swamps typically formed in extremely humid rainforests. As for a Strong Acid Swamp, it required a series of acidic environmental factors to exist—its rarity in Jiuzhou was probably second only to that of a Tenth-Level Beast. How could such a vast Strong Acid Swamp exist in the relatively dry Northern Liang Mountain Range?
Just as Ye Huan was filled with confusion and doubt, Ye Luo carefully observed their surroundings and opened his mouth again, delivering shocking news: "Young Master, we might not find the Holy Dragon here. Look at the mist floating above that Strong Acid Swamp; if I'm not mistaken, it should be the toxic gas carried by the legendary Tenth-Level Beast, Hell Dragon..."
"You mean to say that there is no Tenth-Level Magical Beast Sacred Dragon at the center of the Northern Liang Mountain Range, but rather a Tenth-Level Beast, Hell Dragon?"
According to Ye Luo's analysis and glancing at the continuously floating purple mist above the Strong Acid Swamp, Ye Huan had to admit that Ye Luo's reasoning was indeed sound. He had heard of Hell Dragons before; legend had it that they were formed from Hell Serpents—Third Rank magical beasts—that survived for over a thousand years and underwent mutation. Their skin could withstand blades and swords; even a Ninth-Level Practitioner's sword energy would likely fail to penetrate it. Moreover, being a creature from hell, wherever a Hell Dragon went, it would emit a purple mist capable of corroding everything.
However, these were ultimately just legends whose truth could not be verified. But now that they were here, did Ye Huan intend to return empty-handed? After hesitating for a moment and thinking about his immobile brother Ye Tian back home, Ye Huan could only comfort himself and said to Ye Luo, "Ye Butler, I still want to see what lies at the true center of the Northern Liang Mountain Range because no one can guarantee that there aren't two Tenth-Level Beasts present there."
"Well..."
Ye Luo thought carefully as well; who said that there must be two Tenth-Level Beasts at the center of the Northern Liang Mountain Range? If there truly was a Hell Dragon present, perhaps a Holy Dragon might also appear—just like how Fire Armored Dragons and Frost Lizards coexist in mutual restraint.
Nodding in agreement with Ye Huan's perspective, Ye Luo then posed another question: "By the way, Young Master, since you plan to enter the center of the Northern Liang Mountain Range, have you found a way to cross this Strong Acid Swamp?"
A method? This was something Ye Huan hadn't considered yet. After all, this Strong Acid Swamp could corrode anything; aside from above it, there seemed to be no other way through. Just as he was about to ask Ye Luo if they could find an area nearby suitable for summoning an Apache Attack Helicopter, a voice suddenly interrupted him: "He has no way; I do!"
"Who is it?"
Given that they were already close enough to the center of the Northern Liang Mountain Range, anyone appearing here was likely someone with extraordinary strength. Upon hearing the voice, Ye Huan quickly drew an M4A1 assault rifle and aimed it toward the source of the sound. Beside him, Ye Luo reacted similarly, though lacking Ye Huan's weapon, he instead unsheathed a longsword, both of them questioning in unison.
"You don't need to be too nervous. Let me introduce myself. My name is Bai Yulin. Like you, I'm here in the Northern Liang Mountain Range searching for a Tenth-Level Beast. However, I am a bit luckier than you; I made it here without any trouble..."
Bai Yulin smiled as he responded to Ye Huan and Ye Luo. Judging by his appearance, he looked quite young, around his twenties. His long hair was neatly tied back in a ponytail, and he wore a white robe that accentuated his handsome features. With sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, he was strikingly good-looking—perhaps even rivaling Ye Huan.
Influenced by Bai Yulin's smile, Ye Huan felt no significant hostility toward him but remained vigilant. Holding his M4A1 assault rifle steady, he continued to question, "So it's Bai Yulin, huh? You say you have a way to cross the Strong Acid Swamp—how true is that? Also, why do you want to help us?"
"I do have a way, but don't get me wrong; I'm not here to help you. I'm here for my own reasons. You see, there’s something very important to me located at the center of the Northern Liang Mountain Range that I must obtain at all costs!"
With a serious expression on his face, Bai Yulin quickly provided his answer and added, "By the way, it won't hurt to tell you this: what I want is the Hell Dragon's inner core!"
"The Hell Dragon's inner core? Dude, that's a Tenth-Level Beast! Are you really that confident?"
Upon hearing Bai Yulin's words and scrutinizing him from head to toe, Ye Huan couldn't shake off his doubts about Bai Yulin's strength. After all, no one had ever seen a Tenth-Level Beast before. Unable to contain himself any longer, Ye Huan voiced his concerns.
To Ye Huan's surprise, Bai Yulin candidly replied, "I don't have that much confidence in being able to defeat a Tenth-Level Beast myself; that's why I'm looking for you."
"…"
Ye Huan never expected that Bai Yulin intended to use them to kill the Tenth-Level Beast known as the Hell Dragon. Both he and Ye Luo fell into a state of speechlessness. After weighing the pros and cons for a moment, Ye Huan finally nodded in agreement. The reasons for his consent were twofold: first, having a way to cross the Strong Acid Swamp would save both him and Ye Luo from wasting time there—who knew if dangers lurked above the swamp? Second, Ye Huan had come with the intention of obtaining blood from the Holy Dragon and was already mentally prepared for a confrontation with a Tenth-Level Beast. Besides, collaborating with Bai Yulin meant their combined strength would surpass that of just two.
However, Ye Huan wasn't foolish. After agreeing to Bai Yulin's proposal, he made sure to state his own conditions: "Bai Yulin, helping you obtain the Tenth-Level Beast's inner core is fine, but aside from providing a way across the Strong Acid Swamp, if we encounter the legendary Tenth Level Magical Beast—the Sacred Dragon—you must also help us obtain its blood..."
"The Holy Dragon's blood? What do you need that for?"
Bai Yulin looked at Ye Huan with an odd expression as if he had heard something unbelievable; his eyes widened slightly.
"My father has been poisoned by Bone Poison; only the blood of a Holy Dragon can cure him..."
Observing Bai Yulin's expression, Ye Huan remained unfazed, just as he would be if he heard that Bai Yulin intended to obtain the inner core of a Tenth-Level Beast. It was both shocking and entirely reasonable; if Bai Yulin had appeared unperturbed, Ye Huan would have truly begun to question what kind of person he was.
After a moment of hesitation, Bai Yulin ultimately agreed to Ye Huan's terms. He retrieved four peculiar yellow talismans from his robe, handing two of them to Ye Huan and Ye Luo. He affixed one to his own chest.
"What is this?"
As Ye Huan took the talisman, a chilling sensation coursed through his arm and into his limbs and internal organs, making him instantly feel that this talisman was undoubtedly a valuable item; otherwise, it wouldn't possess such an extraordinary aura.
Like Ye Huan, when Ye Luo received her talisman, she too felt a jolt of energy and looked at Bai Yulin with a changed expression, nearly pulling him aside for an explanation.
Noticing their reactions, Bai Yulin understood that without clarification, the situation would remain unresolved. He picked up the last remaining talisman and explained, "This is a talisman infused with the blood of a Ninth-Level Beast known as the Shadow Empress. It can repel any kind of deadly poison in existence, including various strong acids."
To demonstrate for Ye Huan and Ye Luo, Bai Yulin waved his hand, unleashing two streams of sword energy that sliced through a towering tree with a diameter of one meter. He then used a hand strike to reduce the tree's trunk to a six-meter-long, one-meter-wide plank about five centimeters thick. Carefully placing the talisman on the plank, he tossed it directly into the Strong Acid Swamp. Miraculously...
With the naked eye, it was evident that the plank bearing Bai Yulin's talisman showed no signs of corrosion from the strong acid; it simply floated atop the foul-smelling mire. Even the purple mist in the air seemed to have found its nemesis, retreating obediently to the sides.
With a slight smile, Bai Yulin waved his sleeve and leaped confidently onto the plank, gesturing for Ye Huan and Ye Luo to follow.
Exchanging glances and encouraged by Bai Yulin's example, Ye Huan and Ye Luo jumped onto the plank together and began drifting toward the other side of the Strong Acid Swamp...
