Chapter 213: Searching for the Holy Dragon (Part Two)
According to Ye Huan's understanding, the Northern Liang Mountain Range was indeed vast. Although there were no specific figures to quantify it, the endless peaks alone were enough to illustrate the point. This made Ye Huan feel a twinge of worry. Based on the expansive area of the Northern Liang Mountain Range, it was clear that during his last encounter with the high-level magical beast, the Human Skin Tree, he had not even covered half the distance to the center of the mountain range. What kind of magical beasts lay ahead was uncertain, and if he wanted to find the Holy Dragon, these beasts would undoubtedly be the first challenge Ye Huan had to face.
As the tall trees gradually obscured the sunlight, two loud bangs echoed as Ye Huan and Ye Luo both turned on the military flashlights attached to their M4A1 assault rifles. However, to their surprise, in the jungle of the Northern Liang Mountain Range, even at maximum brightness, the flashlight could only illuminate about ten meters ahead; beyond that lay an endless darkness, a stark contrast to Ye Huan's previous visit.
'Could it be that we took a wrong entrance?'
Feeling something was off, Ye Huan could hardly imagine that the fabric he had found earlier near a thicket was actually left behind by a professional who had come here for a different purpose! The droppings that had entered the soil could only prove that a professional had been there; all that remained was the fabric on him. In other words, the area that Ye Huan and Ye Luo had entered was not at all where they had previously accessed the Northern Liang Mountain Range!
"Young Master, I feel something is not right. Did you hear that squeaking sound?"
Like Ye Huan, Ye Luo sensed something was amiss and could no longer hold back. He turned to Ye Huan and spoke. The squeaking sound was not something he had fabricated; after calming himself down, Ye Huan also heard it—a sound reminiscent of countless mice rushing toward them.
Attempting to extend his Divine Sense, Ye Huan was horrified to discover that within the Northern Liang Mountain Range, his Divine Sense was even weaker than underground; it could barely extend a meter around him!
Steadying his nerves and reminding himself that lacking Divine Sense was not a big deal, Ye Huan remained vigilant as he scanned his surroundings. However, when he still saw no signs of any creatures, curiosity began to gnaw at him about what kind of creature could produce such a mouse-like sound and how it could carry over such a distance.
Just as Ye Huan pondered where this sound might be coming from, Ye Luo seemed to have an epiphany and blurted out: "Could it be a Third Rank magical beast, the Bat Rat?"
Upon hearing what Ye Luo said, Ye Huan froze mid-motion with his M4A1's military flashlight. Shocked, he turned his head just in time to meet Ye Luo's gaze. If there had been a third person present, they would have easily noticed the intense shock reflected in both their eyes.
It was no wonder—Third Rank magical beast Bat Rat was an exceedingly common creature. Its body size resembled that of a twenty-first-century field mouse and bore an uncanny resemblance to one as well; yet it sported a pair of bat wings. It looked bizarre beyond belief. If there were only one Bat Rat, not even Ye Huan would have trouble dealing with it; even Zuo Yi could easily handle one here. But what made matters worse was that when Bat Rats appeared, they came in swarms—thousands or even countless numbers—like a tide of rodents sweeping through everything in their path. With wings at their disposal, even airborne creatures would find it hard to escape their pursuit, let alone humans.
The more they listened, the more the sound resembled that of a mouse. In that moment, Ye Huan's first instinct was to retreat. After exchanging a glance with Ye Luo, the two began to back away cautiously, planning to figure out what the Bat Rat was saying. Otherwise, facing thousands of Bat Rats alone would leave them no chance of survival.
Moving carefully, Ye Luo was so tense that he accidentally stepped on a dry twig, which snapped loudly underfoot.
Like a flock of Feathered Birds taking flight from the forest, as soon as the twig broke, Ye Huan immediately heard countless creatures flapping their wings. This time, not only was Ye Luo panicking, but Ye Huan's heart raced as well.
With no time for complaints or hesitation, he summoned the Flame Sun Sword. Stepping up, he pulled Ye Luo and flew in the opposite direction of the sound's source. After flying for what felt like over ten seconds, Ye Huan couldn't shake the feeling that the source of the Bat Rat's voice was not only still close but seemed to be getting nearer...
In the darkness without any light, even if Ye Huan wanted to discern their location, he found it impossible. He had no choice but to change direction and dart off in another way. Another ten seconds passed, and just like before, the more they ran, the closer they got to where the Bat Rat was making noise. At this rate, he feared he would collapse from exhaustion before the Bat Rat even arrived.
Stopping the Flame Sun Sword while still standing on it, Ye Huan anxiously turned to Ye Luo and asked, "Ye Butler, do you know any weaknesses of the Bat Rat? For example, does it fear fire?"
"Fear fire? Impossible! The Bat Rat is a Third Rank Fire Element Beast!"
After thinking carefully and searching his mind for information, Ye Luo had to admit that there were indeed no weaknesses for the Bat Rats that appeared in swarms. Their sheer numbers were terrifying enough. Helplessly, he informed Ye Huan that the Bat Rat was a Third Rank Fire Element Beast and then fell silent.
Third Rank Fire Element Beast...
Having understood everything Ye Luo said clearly, Ye Huan truly wondered if he had run out of luck. How could it be that all the Arms he summoned were related to fire? Relying on Arms to block the Bat Rats was not an option...
Filtering through all the Arms in his Summoning Book in his mind, as he noticed the Bat Rats drawing closer and closer, Ye Huan suddenly remembered that there was indeed one Arm in his Summoning Book that had nothing to do with fire: Tear Gas!
Anyone who studied chemistry knew that Tear Gas typically contained chemicals like magnesium and sodium nitrate. Given its fog-like release, it should have a decent effect on the Bat Rats. Realizing this, without hesitation, Ye Huan summoned several canisters of Tear Gas. However, time was not on his side; before he could summon more Tear Gas, Ye Luo's Military Flashlight illuminated a spot ahead where the first Bat Rat appeared. It flapped its wings as it flew toward them. With the naked eye, one could see that when its wings were spread wide, the Bat Rat measured nearly thirty centimeters across but only about ten centimeters long. Its small mouth bore sharp fangs and its eyes glowed with an eerie green light, making it look particularly repulsive.
Noticing that the Bat Rat had already appeared and with no time left for further summoning, Ye Huan swiftly pulled the tabs on several canisters of Tear Gas and hurled them five meters ahead—right in between them and the approaching Bat Rat...
The hissing sound of gas leaking filled the air as a thick cloud of Tear Gas quickly spread, creating a misty wall that kept the Bat Rats at bay.
"Cough, cough, Ye Butler, hurry, let's move back a bit."
As the acrid smell of the gas hit him, Ye Huan felt a wave of nausea wash over him. He hurriedly called out to Ye Luo, but to avoid the situation where they had previously run closer to the Bat Rats, he slowly backed away while continuing to summon more Tear Gas.
After retreating about five meters and finally no longer smelling any gas, Ye Huan felt relieved. Taking a deep breath of fresh air, he tossed the Tear Gas canisters in three other directions, encasing them in the center. Fortunately, in the Northern Liang Mountain Range, the air was stagnant without wind; otherwise, if a strong gust blew through, Ye Huan and Ye Luo would be the first to suffer.
Sitting quietly under a tree with Ye Luo after narrowly escaping the Bat Rats' pursuit, Ye Luo looked quite guilty. He turned to Ye Huan and said, "Young Master, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to step on that branch..."
"Ye Butler, you don't have eyes on your back. How could you possibly see what was happening behind you?"
With a smile and a shake of his head, Ye Huan had no intention of blaming Ye Luo. In his view, stepping on a branch was something beyond anyone's control.
After sitting for about ten minutes and no longer hearing the squeaks of the Bat Rats around them, Ye Huan decided not to continue moving forward. Instead, he summoned two Tactical Suits and gestured for Ye Luo to change into one as well.
Once they were suited up in Tactical Suits, Ye Huan made sure they would be absolutely safe in the thickets of the Northern Liang Mountain Range. He then summoned a large number of Grenades; there weren't many M67 fragmentation grenades, but there were plenty of Flashbangs, incendiary grenades, and Tear Gas canisters hanging from various spots on their Tactical Suits.
Ye Huan explained to Ye Luo the functions of each type of grenade in detail. Then he pulled out an entire row of four or five hundred rounds of M60 machine gun ammunition.
"What is this...?"
Seeing the M60 ammunition in Ye Huan's hands left Ye Luo puzzled. He couldn't understand why Ye Huan would carry ammunition for an M60 machine gun when he didn't have one to fire it.
In reality, Ye Huan wasn't planning to shoot these bullets; instead, he intended to use them as markers for their path. This way, they wouldn't end up like before—running around aimlessly like headless flies when they could have simply used a Flying Sword to escape.
Under the tree, Ye Huan inserted a bullet from an M60 general-purpose machine gun into the ground. He strapped four to five hundred rounds of ammunition onto his back and continued forward with Ye Luo.
Perhaps due to the large number of Bat Rats in the area, after about five minutes of walking, the path became noticeably smoother. It wasn't until Ye Huan spotted some Low-Level Beasts that he finally breathed a sigh of relief. The presence of other creatures indicated that he and Ye Luo had left the territory of the Bat Rats; otherwise, Ye Huan couldn't believe that such clever beasts would leave a pile of snacks in their own home.
He summoned an M4A1 assault rifle, making the next stretch of road much easier. For the low-level magical beasts, Ye Huan aimed to avoid provoking them as much as possible. If confrontation was unavoidable, he would strive to take them down with the D80 Tiger Tooth military knife attached to his M4A1. Unless absolutely necessary, Ye Huan would not choose to fire his weapon.
They moved quickly, covering over a thousand meters. As the sightings of Low-Level Beasts dwindled, Ye Huan realized they had likely reached the core region of the Northern Liang Mountain Range; otherwise, those Low-Level Beasts wouldn't have disappeared so completely.
Like humans, magical beasts also have their territories. In a given area, it is rare for two high-level magical beasts to coexist. Without competitors, Low-Level Beasts become their prey; under such circumstances, how could there be many Low-Level Beasts around?
Gripping his M4A1 tightly, Ye Huan aimed to reach the central area of the Northern Liang Mountain Range as quickly as possible. He and Ye Luo were moving in a straight line when suddenly, without warning, a loud explosion erupted from the nearby jungle. The ground shook slightly, startling Ye Huan.
He glanced at Ye Luo; confusion and curiosity flashed in their eyes as they wondered what had just happened nearby. Before they could investigate further, the ground trembled again, and two massive magical beasts appeared before them. To Ye Huan's dismay, these two beasts came one after another, perfectly sandwiching him and Ye Luo in between.
One was an Eighth-Level Magical Beast known as the Fire Armored Dragon, which Ye Huan had seen before. The other was its natural enemy—the Frost Lizard—also an Eighth-Level Magical Beast. The appearance of these two creatures guaranteed an earth-shattering battle; they were clearly engaged in a dispute over territory, much like humans fighting for land.
"Damn it! Who did I provoke? Two Eighth-Level Magical Beasts are fighting right in front of me?"
Looking back and forth, feeling that his luck had hit rock bottom, Ye Huan was overwhelmed by an urge to just charge through…
