Chapter 96: Assault on Cining Palace (Part One)
As the royal family and supreme ruler of the Southern Xiongnu Empire, he was well aware that news had spread throughout the entire empire about Ye Huan coming to the palace to rescue his family. To maintain the dignity of the royal family, he had made thorough preparations, sending Liu Ruyan and Ye Le directly to the Cining Palace where the Empress resided, and deploying a large number of skilled guards. It was a flawless plan.
However, Xuan Ziming seemed to have overlooked one crucial point…
“Ye Huan, the Heaven and Earth Spiritual Energy inside is incredibly dense, and… I can hardly sense the strength of over a hundred people!”
After closing his eyes to sense the surroundings, Zhang Ren quickly noticed something unusual within Cining Palace. He whispered to Ye Huan, pausing slightly when mentioning the strength of those individuals, clearly intimidated.
‘Are they all stronger than Sixth Level Peak?’
Clenching his M4A1 assault rifle tightly, Ye Huan was certain that Liu Ruyan and Ye Le were being held there. Otherwise, why would a mere empress require so many guards? Over a hundred experts above Sixth Level Peak could easily annihilate an army of hundreds of thousands on the battlefield.
Determined, Ye Huan summoned several Tear Gas grenades. He resolved that under no circumstances should they confront these people head-on; Grandpa Mao had once said: ‘We must wear down the enemy’s living forces!’
Tearing a strip of cloth from his clothing, he bound all the flashbangs and Tear Gas together. Finally, he tore off a thinner piece of fabric to tie the pins of these grenades together, assembling a makeshift grenade pack.
He shoved the grenade pack into Zhang Ren's hands without hesitation and commanded him, “Here, take this and find a way to throw it into Cining Palace…”
Zhang Ren looked at the array of flashbangs and Tear Gas in confusion. Still not quite understanding Ye Huan's intention, he asked with a puzzled expression, “Ye Huan, I know what a flashbang does. But why did you include Tear Gas? If we go in there, won’t we end up crying too?”
“Who told you we’re going in? Can’t we force them out instead?” Without lifting his head, Ye Huan pressed on his 2012 Arms catalog, summoning a Barrett rifle into his hands.
Surveying his surroundings, Ye Huan’s attention was drawn to a six or seven-meter tall Clock Tower. From his vantage point, he could clearly see that the brass clock face was prominently displayed—clearly set up to remind those in the inner palace of the time.
Gesturing for Zhang Ren to follow through with their earlier plan, Ye Huan quickly made his way toward the Clock Tower while holding both the Barrett and his modified M4A1 assault rifle.
After about two minutes and scaling two palace walls while clearing out eunuchs near the Clock Tower with his silenced M4A1, Ye Huan wasted no time rushing to position himself by the brass clock face. He set up the Barrett and continuously adjusted the scope.
After about ten more seconds had passed, through the scope, Ye Huan noticed that Zhang Ren was surprisingly fast. He had chosen the most direct and effective method—running straight to Cining Palace’s entrance and throwing in the grenade pack entrusted to him by Ye Huan before swiftly turning back toward Ye Huan’s position.
‘Seriously? Don’t you know how to check inside first?’
Gripping the handle of the Barrett tightly, Ye Huan couldn't help but regret letting Zhang Ren take on such a task. After all, in a palace, places referred to as 'courtyards' were typically where important figures resided, and aside from the buildings, various gardens had been constructed within.
From the direction Zhang Ren had thrown the grenade, it landed perfectly in the center of the garden. Now, all Ye Huan could do was pray that the tear gas summoned through the 2012 Arms Compendium would be powerful enough to force everyone inside the room out.
As Ye Huan had anticipated, after the grenade appeared in Cining Palace, about a dozen professionals gathered from various locations within, eager to investigate what it was. Unfortunately, the grenade didn’t give them a chance; the flashbang attached to it erupted with blinding white light, leaving each of them momentarily unable to open their eyes.
To shoot or not to shoot?
Peering through the scope at the situation in Cining Palace's garden, Ye Huan was torn. On one hand, he feared missing this golden opportunity by not firing; on the other hand, he worried that if he did shoot, those inside Cining Palace would not come out to escape the tear gas.
After agonizing for what felt like an eternity, he noticed Zhang Ren sprinting toward him with two unknown-level martial artists following closely behind. With a determined heart, Ye Huan pulled the trigger on his Barrett.
Bang!
The gunshot reverberated painfully in Ye Huan's ears as a large hole appeared in one of the martial artist's heads behind Zhang Ren. It was as if he had suddenly collided with a massive hammer mid-run; brain matter and blood splattered everywhere—the man was dead beyond recovery.
Without even a moment to catch his breath, Ye Huan aimed again at another individual still pursuing Zhang Ren. At that moment, he felt more tense than ever before. He squeezed the trigger once more; the Barrett roared again as a bullet penetrated this remaining foe's skull!
Since he had already taken action, there was no way Ye Huan could stop now. Adjusting his scope, he focused on those blinded by the flashbang in Cining Palace's garden. He felt like an eagle hunting for rabbits on the prairie! Each shot claimed a vibrant life!
The continuous gunfire echoed as Ye Huan fired again and again with his Barrett, each roar sending vibrations through his shoulder that made it ache.
Suppressing this discomfort, he dispatched ten bullets into ten professionals' heads before summoning another Barrett and handing it to Zhang Ren, who had just reached Clock Tower. Gripping his modified M4A1 assault rifle, Ye Huan turned and headed down toward Clock Tower.
"Ye Huan, what are you doing?"
Panting heavily, Zhang Ren clutched the Barrett given by Ye Huan, confusion written all over his face.
With determination flashing in his eyes, Ye Huan didn’t look back but moved his lips slightly:
"You help me take out those outer martial artists while I try to force everyone inside Cining Palace out. Otherwise, no matter how many professionals we kill, it won’t matter!"
Exiting Clock Tower while holding his M4A1 assault rifle, Ye Huan felt uncertain about its usefulness. He decided to switch it for an RPG Rocket Launcher and quickly made his way to the front entrance of Cining Palace.
After throwing four or five flashbangs in quick succession, Ye Huan darted into the garden of Cining Palace cautiously, observing those who had been blinded by the flashbangs.
Perhaps sensing someone approaching, one martial artist swung his hand without opening his eyes and unleashed a wave of sword energy that struck the ground at Ye Huan's feet, creating a small crater. He shouted angrily, "Who goes there!"
"What kind of people are they? Isn't the news about my arrival at the palace spreading all over the Southern Xiongnu Empire?"
Ye Huan sneered, showing no interest in these Professionals who had already lost their vision. Slinging the RPG Rocket Launcher on his back, he summoned an M60 machine gun and opened fire, not aiming to kill but to incapacitate them!
In fact, Ye Huan succeeded. After a barrage from the M60, the high-ranking Professionals were left wailing, each sporting multiple bullet holes, blood seeping out as they staggered. A few unfortunate souls were even struck in the head by the gunfire and dropped dead on the spot, leaving them utterly humiliated.
Taking a cautious step forward and receiving no attack, Ye Huan took another step, a tear gas canister appearing in his hand.
Step by step, he approached the inner gate of Cining Palace. By now, he held dozens of tear gas canisters, pulling the pins one by one. Ye Huan quickly hurled them into the inner palace before retreating back to his position near the Clock Tower.
Fortunately, Ye Huan had not entered the inner palace. Once back at the Clock Tower, he summoned a Barrett rifle and observed as a dozen people rushed out of Cining Palace moments later. Each of them had eyes red as rabbits, tears streaming down their faces, wielding swords that glimmered with bright white light.
Furrowing his brow, Ye Huan was puzzled by how few people emerged from Cining Palace. Zhang Ren had previously mentioned that there were over a hundred Professionals inside. Excluding the ten or so in the courtyard and those he had already taken down, there should still be at least eighty people remaining inside. Yet now? At least sixty were still unaccounted for!
"Could someone be neutralizing the effects of the tear gas?"
A memory flashed through his mind of when the Mysterious Elder had blocked a Hummer loaded with flashbangs in Northern Liang City. Ye Huan realized that forcing everyone out of Cining Palace would not be easy. However, if they didn't drive everyone out, both he and Zhang Ren would only find themselves walking into a dead end!
"Damn it! It would be so satisfying to burn that place down."
Understanding Ye Huan's frustration and feeling uneasy himself, Zhang Ren voiced this thought aloud, causing Ye Huan's eyes to light up...
