Sometimes, Ye Huan truly couldn't understand what Weiyang was thinking, much like how perplexing it was that the president of the Mage Association had a grandson who was exceedingly overweight. He reached out to catch the object thrown by Weiyang and examined it closely; it was clearly the same map of Huaxia Nation from fifteen years ago that Weiyang had shown him last time.
This only deepened Ye Huan's confusion. He couldn't grasp the meaning behind Weiyang's earlier words, especially why he had tossed this old map over.
After staring at the map for a while, Ye Huan couldn't find any hidden secrets within it. With a puzzled expression, he turned to Weiyang and asked, "Weiyang, why did you give me this map?"
"Do you remember what I told you about the Fourth Level Trial?" Instead of directly answering Ye Huan's question, Weiyang posed another question.
The Fourth Level Trial? After thinking for a moment, Ye Huan realized that this was related to his previous inquiry about why Weiyang had left the capital. It hadn't been long ago, and he remembered it clearly, so he nodded.
"That's good to hear. To be honest with you, my destination for this trial is exactly where we are now—the Northern Liang Mountain Range. And the Northern Liang Mountain Range happens to be the natural barrier surrounding Liangzhou..."
With a troubled expression, Weiyang slowly revealed everything he knew to Ye Huan.
"What?"
Before Weiyang could finish speaking, Ye Huan, Zhang Ren, and the little princess couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
The Northern Liang Mountain Range, the destination of the trial, and the protective layer around Liangzhou—just these pieces of information made Ye Huan understand why Zhao Wujie hadn't sent troops for support when Liangzhou was under siege.
This was clearly a Monster Mountain, one that only allowed entry but not exit! However, there was one thing Ye Huan still didn't understand: if Huaxia Nation couldn't provide support to Liangzhou due to the existence of the Northern Liang Mountain Range, then how had those fellows from the Southern Xiongnu Empire managed to approach Liangzhou City?
The more he thought about it, the stranger it seemed. Ye Huan looked at Weiyang and was about to speak when a piercing scream echoed from nearby: "Help me! Help... ah...!"
In that desolate hillside area, combined with that chilling scream, all four of them shuddered in unison.
Last night, for everyone's safety, Ye Huan had tied up the black-clad man who dared to kidnap the little princess and moved him behind a large rock. If nothing unusual had happened, that scream must have come from him.
However, separated by a large rock, all they could do was guess. In this hillside area, who would go looking for trouble with that black-clad man? Suddenly, two words popped into all their minds: 'Monster Beast'!
According to Ye Huan's past memories, Ye Tian had taught him one important lesson since childhood: the aggression of magical beasts is extremely strong. When a magical beast is hungry, it can unleash power that is a whole level stronger than an ordinary Summoner. Therefore, unless absolutely necessary, it is best to avoid provoking magical beasts.
However, it was clear that they were not the ones provoking the magical beasts; rather, it was likely that the beasts had already set their sights on them!
Recalling his father's repeated warnings, Ye Huan summoned the 2012 Arms Collection without hesitation. He continuously summoned several M67 Fragmentation Grenades and held them in his hands, then called forth Dragon Scale Armor. Turning to the others, he said, "You all stay here; I’ll go take a look..."
After speaking, Ye Huan cast a warning glance at the little princess. The meaning was quite clear; usually, he could tolerate being slapped by her twice, but in a life-or-death situation, he felt that his own life was far more important. He worried that the little princess might cause trouble and endanger everyone.
"What are you looking at me for..."
Under Ye Huan's gaze, the little princess blushed and lowered her head. Her hands fidgeted together nervously as she spoke in a voice barely above a whisper. Clearly, she misunderstood the situation and thought Ye Huan was showing concern for her...
Not bothering to observe the little princess's expression any longer, Ye Huan took a step forward. However, just as he did so, a strong arm landed on his shoulder. Weiyang's voice rang out from behind him: "Why don’t I go instead? After all, I’m one of the strongest here; my magical defense is quite formidable, hehe..."
"What do you mean you’re the strongest? Don’t forget I’m a Fifth-Level Warrior—surely that’s stronger than you as a Fourth-Level Mage?"
Before Weiyang could finish speaking, Zhang Ren stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the little princess as if trying to show off in front of her...
Perhaps it was fate that made them rivals; upon hearing Zhang Ren’s words, Weiyang turned away in frustration. The two began to argue over who was stronger at such a critical moment, and eventually even Ye Huan was dragged into their debate.
After about two minutes of back-and-forth, they finally decided that Zhang Ren would be the most suitable choice to go since his status as a Fifth-Level Warrior gave him a significant speed advantage.
Pleased with this assignment, Zhang Ren thought that this time the little princess would surely notice him more. However, when he turned around, he stood there dumbfounded.
Following his line of sight ahead, he saw that atop a boulder blocking their view had appeared an enormous spider. Its black fur and eight thick legs made it at least three meters wide. Perhaps sensing its battle readiness, it raised its massive head high, revealing two sharp fangs in its gaping mouth. Due to its raised head position, a clearly visible black circle could be seen on its abdomen...
"Hey! I thought you weren’t going? If you’re not going to take action, then I will!" Not noticing the giant spider’s presence, Weiyang waved his hand in front of Zhang Ren and said this.
Did Zhang Ren still need to go? The answer was obvious: no way!
Zhang Ren pointed at the spider on the giant rock and fell silent, leaving everything unspoken.
"What is that? Oh my... a Black-Bellied Bear Spider?"
As a Town Enforcer who had climbed the ranks through connections in Beiyuan City, it was not surprising that he didn't recognize this type of spider. However, for Weiyang, who had grown up in the Mage Association and needed to hunt magical beasts for the Fourth Level Trial, it was impossible not to know.
Just by glancing in the direction Zhang Ren indicated, Weiyang immediately shouted out the name of the spider: a Fifth-Level Magical Beast, the Black-Bellied Bear Spider!
Weiyang's familiarity with this magical beast stemmed from its notorious reputation. It was so well-known that anyone who had seen it would remember it vividly. Unlike ordinary spiders that spun webs, this one relied on its eight strong limbs to fight. This distinctive feature led many to forever remember it, even naming it with 'bear' to signify that its limbs were as powerful as those of a giant bear.
Upon Weiyang's exclamation, the little princess and Ye Huan also noticed the presence of the Black-Bellied Bear Spider. Both were momentarily stunned at the sight of such a large spider.
"Look! Its mouth seems to be stained with blood."
In the scene, Weiyang was perhaps the only one unafraid of the Black-Bellied Bear Spider. After observing the Fifth-Level Magical Beast for a moment, he pointed at its raised head and said, "Look at its mouth."
Hearing Weiyang's words, Ye Huan and the others reacted as well. Suppressing their fear of spiders, they turned their gazes to the creature's mouth. Ye Huan clearly saw not only blood but also bits of flesh inside the large mouth of the Black-Bellied Bear Spider.
Recalling the earlier scream, Ye Huan felt an urge to vomit.
Struggling against his discomfort and shock at the sight of the Black-Bellied Bear Spider, Ye Huan quickly moved to stand protectively behind the little princess. He summoned an M4A1 assault rifle and kept a vigilant watch on the Black-Bellied Bear Spider that was eyeing them from atop the rock.
"Weiyang, what should we do?"
Having never encountered such a magical beast before, Zhang Ren asked Weiyang for advice once he regained his composure.
"Run! What else can we do? If this Fifth-Level Magical Beast goes on a rampage, it's equivalent to a Sixth-Level Summoner! Are you going to fight it?" After admiring the spider's imposing presence for a moment, Weiyang answered and then took off running toward the mountain top.
As for why they should run up the mountain, it had to do with the habits of magical beasts. Generally speaking, magical beasts residing in mountains were fewer at higher altitudes; their suitable habitats were limited to areas at the foot and mid-slope of mountains. Therefore, in Monster Mountain, the summit was considered the safest place.
Seeing Weiyang flee, Zhang Ren couldn't care less about anything else. He turned and dashed toward the mountain peak, and Ye Huan did the same. The four of them ran faster than rabbits.
They had barely taken two steps when the three-meter-long Black-Bellied Bear Spider on the boulder sprang into action. Its eight powerful limbs moved swiftly across the ground, and in the blink of an eye, it was behind the slowest runner, Ye Huan. With its mouth wide open, it lunged at Ye Huan, revealing sharp teeth that resembled two-foot-long short blades. If bitten, he would likely not even know how he died.
Feeling the rushing wind behind him, Ye Huan turned just in time to see the gaping maw of the Black-Bellied Bear Spider approaching. Terrified, he dropped to the ground and fired a burst from his M4A1 assault rifle.
Everything has its duality; while the limbs of the Black-Bellied Bear Spider were incredibly strong, its central body appeared somewhat vulnerable in comparison. After Ye Huan's barrage, several bullets embedded themselves into the spider's body, and the impact forced it to stagger back several steps.
Seizing this opportunity, Ye Huan quickly pulled out an M67 fragmentation grenade he had summoned earlier. He removed the safety pin and hurled it at the Black-Bellied Bear Spider before sprinting after Weiyang and the others without looking back.
Typically, higher-level magical beasts are smarter. Upon seeing Ye Huan throw down an M67 fragmentation grenade and take off running, the Black-Bellied Bear Spider raised one of its powerful limbs and swatted the grenade away with force before quickly pursuing Ye Huan and his companions. Each time its limbs struck the ground, they sent up a shower of debris.
As for the M67 grenade that Ye Huan had just thrown, it arced gracefully through the air after being swatted away before landing nearby with a tremendous explosion.
Hearing the blast, Ye Huan couldn't help but glance back. When he saw that the Black-Bellied Bear Spider was still chasing them, his heart nearly stopped. He scrambled up the mountain as fast as he could. However, the ground was littered with rubble, severely hindering their progress. Not only Ye Huan but even Zhang Ren and the little princess—who had much better physical conditioning—were not far ahead of him. Even Weiyang's Wind Acceleration Magic lost its effectiveness…
At this moment, Ye Huan and his three companions found themselves in grave danger.
"Damn it! I'm only nineteen! I'm still a virgin!"
Cursing inwardly, Ye Huan refused to give up hope for survival. He clawed his way up the mountain, oblivious to the cuts on his arms from sharp stones, desperate to escape from the jaws of the Black-Bellied Bear Spider.
