"I did not kill him."
These were the exact words of Jun Chong, spoken without any intention to refute or conceal, maintaining his usual manner of speaking.
I knew Qi Zhi did not believe him, but I did, even though hearing it at that moment made my heart ache.
"You say you didn't, so you didn't? So many people witnessed it; do you dare deny it?"
Qi Zhi's anger surged, dark energy swirling around his feet, lifting the hem of his clothes. The Dragon Spear in his hand moved with agility, spinning as it pointed menacingly at Jun Chong, revealing a murderous intent that only grew stronger.
"Today, I will surely put you to death for my wife and child."
As he launched his attack, no one in the Underworld Palace intervened. Jun Chong stood with his hands behind his back, wanting to draw his sword, but the Black Abyss did not appear in his hand despite his call.
Instead, I witnessed an unbelievable scene.
Jun Rui, dressed in black, appeared behind Jun Chong like a shadow. Immediately, Jun Chong's body trembled, astonishment flashing in his eyes but hidden beneath his lashes; only a faint curve began to form at the corner of his mouth.
Jun Rui whispered something in his ear, and Jun Chong merely smiled. On the surface, there seemed to be nothing shocking about it.
However, from my angle, the moment Jun Rui appeared, I saw a thin blade reflecting light as it pierced into Jun Chong's body.
Yet Jun Chong did not angrily push away his older brother. Facing Qi Zhi's attack, black flames suddenly erupted from his palm, used only for basic defense but preventing the shockwave from Qi Zhi's strike from harming Jun Rui.
Even when hurt by someone so close to him, he chose to protect.
But at that moment, Jun Rui did not think that way. Hatred burned fiercely in his eyes as he brought his fingers together and pressed down forcefully. His attack synchronized with Qi Zhi's, delivering a devastating blow to Jun Chong.
Blood spewed from Jun Chong's mouth as he bent over and knelt on one knee, his face pale, causing my heart to feel as if it were being sliced open.
Qi Zhi finally saw the attack behind Jun Rui. Although he was a demon, he was not as ruthless as the Demon King. Seeing this, he became even angrier. "I don't need you to interfere in my matters with him!"
Jun Rui looked at Su Yi, who was screaming and running to embrace Jun Chong, and sneered, "Jun Chong has betrayed the country and released Underworld Evil Spirits to disturb the Netherworld. I am exercising my rights."
"Jun Rui, what are you doing! Are you insane? He is Jun Chong! Your brother!"
"I know." Jun Rui's expression was calm. "But he cannot escape his involvement with Underworld!"
Su Yi's eyes were filled with intense hatred, directed at the man who loved her obsessively. "It was I who caused the Underworld incident! How dare you wrongfully accuse him!"
Jun Rui remained unfazed. He opened his palm upward and revealed a small orb. White light emanated from it, projecting a black silhouette at the Underworld barrier that resembled Jun Chong, who was holding the Black Abyss and ultimately threw it into the Underworld.
"This is evidence. The fact that he cannot produce the Black Abyss is the best proof. As the supervisor, I have the right to execute judgment on this matter!"
According to the rules of the Jun Family, Jun Rui's position allowed him to act if the King of Hell made a mistake. This rule was established for the sake of self-discipline among the kings.
Now, it was true that Jun Chong could not produce the Black Abyss. He merely glanced at Jun Rui with lowered eyes, a bitter smile tugging at his lips, but remained silent. Qi Zhi narrowed his eyes and sneered.
"It was I who did it! I used the Soul Bell to release Underworld Evil Spirits!" Su Yi admitted everything, her fingers clawing as she summoned Blood Flame, pointing her sword at Jun Rui. "If Jun Chong dies, I will not let you go."
"Even if he doesn't die, he won't love you." Jun Rui's eyes were filled with dissatisfaction and pain. His wish for Jun Chong was largely for Su Yi's sake. "Ayi, why can't you understand that Jun Chong doesn't love you?"
"Why can't you understand that I don't love you either!" she screamed through tears. A muffled groan came from Jun Chong, prompting Su Yi to rush protectively toward him, asking cautiously, "Jun Chong, are you okay? Don't worry; I won't let anyone hurt you."
"As long as you don't appear, everything will be fine for me."
Jun Chong pushed him away forcefully, darkness swirling in his eyes like thick ink.
"Do you really not love me at all?" Su Yi refused to believe it. Upon meeting Jun Chong's cold gaze, her heart shattered. In a fit of rage, she shouted, "It's all Anxin's fault! It's because of her existence that things turned out this way. I want to kill her! I want to kill her!"
Su Yi's face twisted in rage, and a dark aura, as black as her emotions, spread from her body, turning her vibrant red into a lifeless black. A whirlwind swept up, and she vanished into thin air.
"Not good."
Jun Chong shouted in alarm, stumbling as he tried to chase after her.
Before I could react, someone grabbed my throat and lifted me off the ground.
At that moment, Su Yi was completely consumed by anger and hatred. She hated me; it was my existence that had led to all of this!
"If it weren't for you, how much better it would be! He wouldn't have fallen in love with you, he wouldn't have abandoned me! Anxin, I know he initially targeted you because of the spiritual power within you, but no matter what, I will not allow you to have any connection with him. Whether he loves me or not, he belongs to me! So you must die today!"
The leakage of spiritual power made her appear even more terrifying. The Blood Flame Sword trembled with rage, eager to unleash its fury. The scorching flames began to burn my clothes; just one moment like this, and I would be consumed.
"The soul harmed by the Blood Flame Sword will not be reincarnated. Anxin, die!"
I knew that no one would come to save me at this moment because it was impossible to be so lucky every time. I just felt unwilling; I hadn't truly enjoyed the beauty of the world before being defeated by its ugliness.
As the intense heat of the flames entered my body, I felt a powerful pull.
Yes, I sensed a force within me calling to the Blood Flame. The Blood Flame responded to that force and completely broke free from Su Yi's grasp, entering my body.
Su Yi gasped in shock. "What is happening? Why is the Blood Flame not obeying me?"
No one answered that question. All I knew was that once the Blood Flame entered my body, the burning sensation intensified. The power within me did not change with the Blood Flame's arrival; instead, it was suppressed by the Blood Flame, igniting me from within.
"Ah—"
I couldn't help but scream as the iron cage shattered from the collision of spiritual power, sending dust swirling into the air.
Su Yi suddenly squinted, gathering strength in her palm. Just before Su Xun entered, she struck my head with a forceful blow. At the same moment, Blood Flame pierced through my body and vanished into the distance, leaving everything in silence.
I fell backward, plunging into an eternal darkness, unable to move any longer.
In that instant, I felt my consciousness become light and float out of Anxin's body. Suddenly, I noticed a red dot remaining on the arm of that body. I recalled the time limit Cangling had given me before I came here.
While I was attached to Anxin, I hadn't seen that red dot on her arm; I never expected to see it only after Anxin's death.
"Su Yi, have you gone mad?" Su Xun exclaimed after confirming my death. He slapped Su Yi angrily, his beard bristling with rage. "All my plans will fail because of you!"
"Master, I—"
"With someone like you, no one will ever love you!"
Su Xun waved his sleeve and left, leaving Su Yi looking utterly stunned.
She gazed at my lifeless form on the ground, her anger intensifying. Gathering power in her palm, she struck at my soul in fury before departing.
The Qilin Hairpin, stained by blood, began to emit a mournful cry, transforming into a Golden Qilin. It howled at me, shedding tears before finally picking me up and flying toward the Underworld Palace.
In that moment, my consciousness was drawn by a force. When I opened my eyes again, I found myself not hovering over Anxin but floating nearby instead.
It dawned on me then that this version of Anxin was truly dead. Soon enough, her soul would begin to dissipate and vanish without a trace.
"Anxin!"
Jun Chong caught sight of me being carried by the Golden Qilin and broke down in tears of rage. He embraced me tightly, for the first time disregarding his dignity as a pitiful man mourning the loss of his beloved.
Behind him, Qi Qi stumbled upon witnessing this scene. Gripping his Dragon Spear tightly, it served as his only support to keep from collapsing.
Time came to a halt, no longer moving forward. Qi Zhi stood there, watching me in Jun Chong's embrace, his eyes gradually becoming moist.
"Anxin, open your eyes and look at me, Anxin! Don't you remember what I said? Without you, I can't go on living! What will it take for you to open your eyes and see me?"
"Anxin, actually, the day you were taken away by Qi Zhi, I had already prepared a wedding dress for you, wanting to give you a surprise. Because I truly love you and don't want to lose you. No one has ever made me hide you in my heart so quickly that I can't take you out again. Only you; you are my only one, my only peace of mind. I named you Anxin because I wanted to seek a sense of belonging in you. But why! Why did you have to leave me all alone? Anxin, I beg you to get angry, okay? Then open your eyes and scold me; I promise to admit my mistakes and never let you cry again."
"Anxin, if you grant me a lifetime, I'll accompany you for eternity. If you grant me immortality, I'll be with you forever. Is that alright? Don't sleep anymore; it's cold here. Let's go home and sleep instead. You can sleep as long as you want then; just open your eyes now and come home with me, okay? I'm hurt, and without your company, I can't move. Can you hold me?"
"My wife Anxin, my wife Anxin."
When did Jun Chong ever say so much in one breath? Never; he usually only said what needed to be said. But this time was completely different.
Each word he spoke, each whisper of "my wife Anxin," struck me deeply, igniting an impulse within me to break into that lingering soul and open my eyes to see him just once—even if only for a second.
Jun Chong, don’t cry.
I wanted so badly to wipe away the tears on his face; a man like him shouldn't cry. He shouldn't show weakness in front of others; he should always be a ruler in public. Even if he cried, it should only be during the moments that belonged to us.
Consciousness can also shed tears. The urge to fulfill his wishes and wipe away his tears spread through my mind continuously. I even reached out with a transparent hand wanting to touch him.
But standing here while he was over there meant that even if I touched him, I would merely pass through because right now, I was just a wisp of consciousness.
Yet at the moment I extended my hand, I subtly noticed that within Jun Chong's embrace, my fingers suddenly moved.
