The tray fell, scattering its contents all over the floor, and tea splashed onto my skirt. Aside from that, everything felt eerily quiet.
The door opened silently, and Jun Chong stepped out. His handsome face wore a familiar expression, but there was something off about it that made me uneasy.
I immediately ducked down, trying to pick up the mess on the ground.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you. I just wanted to bring you some tea, but I didn't expect to be so clumsy."
"You didn't need to do this."
Jun Chong's voice lacked its usual gentleness; it carried a hint of coldness, much like how he spoke to Su Yi. This made me hesitate with my outstretched hand, and my slender fingers lingered in the air, trembling.
"I'm sorry."
"Why say you're sorry? I've told you before, if you haven't done anything wrong, there's no need for those three words. Even if you have done something wrong, you don't have to say them to anyone because I will protect you."
Such domineering words could only come from him without a change in his expression.
My heart stirred slightly as I slowly bit my lip, suppressing the urge to seek his concern. Then I stood up.
Yet I still dared not look him in the eye. With my head bowed, my voice was barely above a whisper, but I knew he could hear me.
"Jun Chong, will you lie to me?"
"I will."
Without a moment's hesitation, the answer made my heart skip a beat. I slowly tightened my fists and asked, "But you absolutely won't hurt me, right?"
"Right."
It was the same tone, the same speed, with no change whatsoever.
I suddenly laughed, looking up at him with crescent-shaped eyes, yet tears streamed down my face. "Then I am willing to trust you. No matter what you ask me to do, I will believe in you."
To my surprise, Jun Chong seemed taken aback, his expression becoming somewhat unnatural.
I continued without noticing, "I just want to live, simply live. I don't dare to wish for anything else. Even if death comes quickly, seeing this world one more time and keeping you in my sight for a moment longer is still beautiful. Perhaps, perhaps after death, a fragment of memory might remain. At that time, the only thing that will hold me together is you."
"Anxin."
Jun Chong's voice trembled slightly as he reached out his hand. I wiped away my tears and looked at the mess on the ground, shaking my head. "What am I doing? You are the King of the Underworld; how can you give up the entire realm for me? You all continue your conversation; I'll go prepare some food."
Jun Chong struggled to suppress the urge to hold me close, standing with his hands behind his back and simply uttering a syllable, "Mm."
I turned to leave, but tears flowed even more rapidly in that instant, forcing me to quicken my pace away from there.
Though I had not been in this world for long and was unfamiliar with its ways, I understood good from bad and could discern what was important. Despite the pain in my heart, it was still my first choice at that moment.
Time always seemed to drag when alone. I watched the light rain falling outside the window, feeling restless.
Jun Chong had said he would be gone for two days a few days ago but had not returned after several days. He must have gone back to the Su Family with Su Yi. I heard from the Maid that it seemed the Underworld would still arrange a marriage alliance with the Su Family.
"So they are really going to get married?"
I lay weakly on the tea table, two small figures made by my hands beside me, one male and one female, representing me and Jun Chong. They were glued together at the hands, never to be separated, yet it was merely a wish deep in my heart.
Cangling was nowhere to be found, and Rong Zhi was busy outside; only Jun Rui would occasionally come over to chat with me.
From his words, I could tell he genuinely liked Su Yi, just as Su Yi liked Jun Chong. He treated her with sincerity but had never received anything in return.
"If they get married, will you cry?" Jun Rui brought over a plate of snacks and placed it in front of me. Looking at the little figures, he smiled, "I think I would cry."
"Do men cry too?"
"Who told you that men don't cry? Even the strongest man can shed tears, including Jun Chong." He offered me a small piece of snack. "Don't be so gloomy; this marriage is between Su Yi and me, not your Jun Chong."
"What?"
I had just taken a bite of the snack and hadn’t swallowed it when I heard those words, instantly choking. Fortunately, Jun Rui quickly handed me a glass of water to save me.
I coughed a few times while holding my neck, feeling slightly better before urgently asking, "How can it be you two?"
"Why are you so sure it's not us?" Jun Rui was different from usual; happiness sparkled in his eyes. "Su Yi was moved by me and is willing to marry me. This way, it counts as a union between both sides, and we can still join forces to deal with the Demon Realm. The Demon King has already issued a challenge; he will definitely attack the Underworld within three months."
"Three months!"
I was astonished. The Underworld was a vast realm after all; for the Demon King to claim he would conquer it in three months seemed like madness unless he truly had confidence.
"Yes. Moreover, the Underworld has been extremely turbulent lately, and the Demon Realm is likely to launch an attack from there. Once the Underworld falls, the Netherworld will struggle to deal with its own people. Unless we can summon the Golden-Clad Reaper who guards the Queen of the Underworld."
"The Golden-Clad Reaper?"
"The Jun Family has a rule that every Queen of the Underworld throughout history wields the Phoenix Feather, which allows them to summon the legendary Death God Corps. They wear golden reaper attire; while their combat power may not be top-tier, they are a formidable force that few can defeat. If we could gain the assistance of the Golden-Clad Reaper to control the Underworld, dealing with the Demon Realm wouldn't be so difficult. But Jun Chong refused, and I believe you understand why."
My hands, resting on my knees, instinctively clenched tightly. To summon the Golden-Clad Reaper, we also needed help from the Su Family; marrying Su Yi would suffice, but Jun Chong had rejected that possibility because of me.
In that moment, a heavy feeling settled in my heart, leaving silence as my only response.
"Anxin, don't worry; everything will find a way."
I nodded and suddenly asked, "Jun Rui, if one day you had to stand against Jun Chong as enemies, would you let him go just because he is your brother?"
Jun Rui's expression flickered with something unnameable before he smiled. "Are you asking me for a favor?"
I nodded vigorously, my expression serious. I always felt there would be a rift between them because of Su Yi, little did I know I was right about that at the time.
Jun Rui patted my head like an older brother and said with a smile, "For your sake, I'll let him off this time. Don't worry; no matter how opposed we are, he is still my little brother. As the elder brother, it's my responsibility."
Jun Rui didn't stay long before leaving. Two days later, I heard that Jun Chong and Su Yi had returned. It was just before dawn when I couldn't care less about sleep and hurriedly asked where Jun Chong was. I rushed over but found no one in the side hall. After inquiring around without any luck, just as I was about to leave, an unfamiliar maid told me she saw Jun Chong heading towards Su Yi's courtyard.
"He went to find Su Yi?"
I was suspicious but thought about how happy he seemed upon returning and made my way towards Su Yi's place. "Ayi? Ayi! Are you there? I'm looking for Jun Chong; have you seen him?"
I entered without seeing any servants, and Su Yi did not respond to me. It wasn't until I reached her bedroom that I caught a whiff of a delightful fragrance, different from that of Cangling. The scent made my head feel a bit dizzy and my vision blurred. I rubbed my eyes, not thinking much of it, and knocked on the door. A woman's voice came from inside, tinged with suppressed emotions.
Worried that something had happened to Su Yi, I hurriedly opened the door, only to find a scene of intimacy—two figures embracing each other in joy. But to me, that sight was painfully jarring and chaotic, filling me with heartache.
Those two faces belonged to the two people I could never let go of, yet at this moment, they were intimately wrapped around each other. Tears streamed down my face as I met Su Yi's triumphant gaze, followed by her even more fervent actions.
"Jun, I know you love me, but there's no need to be so eager. We have all the time in the world, right?"
The man said nothing, letting his actions speak for everything.
My heart felt like it was being torn apart. I sensed an unusual disturbance from Guardian Pearl, but I was too weak to explore why. Tears fell as I silently turned away and ran, my legs carrying me forward as tears streamed down my cheeks.
I couldn't accept that scene; I couldn't accept that he had claimed to like me while being intimate with another woman he said he didn't love. I couldn't accept that the woman I once considered my best friend looked at me with such disdain.
It was as if she were saying, "You watch closely; he wants me."
My heart ached, tears flowed as I stopped in front of Dragon Spring Palace, watching the daylight gradually brighten. I didn't know where to go next.
"Jun Chong, why? Why do this to me? If you love her, I'll step aside. Why deceive me? Was it all just to use me?"
I knelt on the ground; the sun had not yet risen, and instead, dark clouds covered the sky as rain began to fall.
The raindrops hit my body, soaking my clothes as I knelt there, my heart bleeding.
A umbrella was placed over my head; someone stood behind me and softly said, "Su Xun, the power hidden within you is the purest spiritual energy in the world. To the demon realm, it is a great threat. If you belong to the underworld, then in this battle, the underworld's chances of victory will be even greater."
"So he has been plotting since the moment he met me, right?" I chuckled softly, "I really am foolish. Who would go through so much trouble to give a shadow a new life for no reason? He himself has said that he would deceive me."
"Anxin, come with me! I won't hurt you. If you don't believe me, you can use that Seven Souls to feel it for yourself." He gently pressed his lips together and embraced me from behind, "We have lived together."
"Why is it so hard just to live?"
I leaned back, and he held me tighter as dark energy spread from my feet, gradually enveloping us, disappearing into the Underworld Palace.
At the same time, Jun Chong walked over from the other side with Rong Zhi. He was holding a tray, on which lay a set of bright red garments; upon closer inspection, it was the Phoenix Crown and Red Robe.
Jun Chong walked along, laughing as he spoke to Rong Zhi, "I want her to become the most beautiful Queen of the Underworld."
My vision began to blur in the air; I felt incredibly tired and didn't want to think. All I could see were vague figures passing by, but I couldn't hear what they were saying.
Just as Jun Chong finished speaking, he sensed the presence of an invasion from the demon realm. He stopped in his tracks and looked up in shock, "Anxin!" But it was already too late.
I drifted off into a deep sleep for what felt like a long time. It wasn't as uncomfortable as I had imagined; I slept soundly as if I had always done so, and everything that had happened before felt like a dream that would vanish upon waking.
When I opened my eyes, I felt extremely thirsty. I got out of bed and headed straight for the table. As I poured water from the kettle, I realized it was empty. Without thinking much about it, I took the kettle and walked outside, heading to the kitchen to fill it up. I turned to leave calmly amidst the surprised gazes of those who were busy.
As I was leaving, I took a cup with me, pouring water while drinking on my way back to the bedroom until someone grabbed my arm, stopping me in my tracks.
