Molin also caught a whiff of that delicious aroma, and his stomach audibly grumbled, so the phrase "Deal" carried no hint of reluctance.
I wasn't hungry at first, as I hadn't heard anything at Shizui, but upon catching that scent, I suddenly felt as if I hadn't eaten enough for several meals, and the hunger was unbearable.
Without caring about who would pay or anything else, I just wanted to fill my stomach. I grabbed Molin and held Tian Yuan as we headed toward the restaurant.
This was a newly opened eatery called "Delicious Enjoyment." It was different from other restaurants; the exterior was adorned with intricate carvings that gave off an inexplicable sense of grandeur.
The signboard featured five small dragons intricately carved around the words "Delicious Enjoyment," glimmering in gold and shining even brighter under the sunlight.
Although it was still a bit early for dinner, the doors were open, and many people were already entering, all lured by that enticing aroma.
I couldn't quite describe that scent; it resembled the fragrance of meat, rich yet not greasy, with a bouncy quality. It also had hints of floral notes—neither too strong nor too faint—evoking the sweet freshness of spring. It reminded me of pastries as well, making my mouth water with the thought of tender meat that would melt in my mouth before I'd even taken a bite.
In short, the aroma wafted through the air, slowly awakening my appetite.
"Table for two?" A waitress in a qipao approached us with a gentle smile. "And a little dog as well."
It dawned on me then that pets usually weren't allowed during meal times, and I felt a bit embarrassed. However, the waitress said nothing about it; instead, she smiled and gestured for us to follow her inside.
"Is it okay for us to bring our pet?" I asked.
"Of course! We don't have many restrictions here. We can even prepare a meal for it later," she replied.
"Thank you," I said gratefully. Tian Yuan squirmed happily in my arms, looking quite eager for food.
As we reached an empty table at the back, a short and stout middle-aged man approached us. He paused upon seeing us and exchanged a few words with the waitress. She then turned to us and said, "Our boss has requested that you move to a private room to avoid any complaints from other customers about having a pet."
I suddenly felt that they were very considerate, and I couldn't help but glance a few more times at the short, plump man. He smiled gently at me; he wasn't particularly good-looking, but he had a comforting presence, round and chubby.
Although there were many customers and not many waitstaff in sight, our dishes arrived shortly after we sat down. Unsure of what was delicious, we ordered a few recommended dishes.
Each plate that was served was exquisite and large, filled with generous portions of beautifully presented food. The aroma alone was more enticing than what wafted outside.
As soon as the waiter left, Tian Yuan couldn't hold back any longer. He jumped onto the table and reached for one of the plates. Just as he was about to grab it, Molin tapped him with chopsticks. "Pets shouldn't climb onto the table. Go sit over there; I'll throw you something to eat later."
"You don't want to monitor me anymore? If you don't feed me well, there's nothing to watch!"
Molin, who had been so domineering, suddenly fell silent. Finally relenting, Tian Yuan grinned and snatched a piece of food into his mouth before I even saw him chew.
"Is it good?"
"This is simply heavenly!" Tian Yuan continued to munch eagerly, "It's really too delicious."
Molin and I exchanged glances and couldn't resist any longer. We picked up our chopsticks and started eating heartily. I had always thought I couldn't eat much in one sitting, but this time I managed to finish an entire table's worth of food without leaving anything behind.
The wonderful taste lingered on my palate, the fragrance overflowing, lasting for days.
Leaning back in my chair with my hand on my stomach, I let out a satisfied burp. " Molin, I'm so full! It feels like ages since I've eaten this much."
"Me too." Molin burped as well. "Let me take a moment before we leave; you settle the bill first."
"…"
I paid the bill; the meal was a bit pricey but delicious and plentiful, so I didn't feel cheated. After sitting for a while, Molin and I headed out together. There were still many people outside; all the seats were taken, and quite a few were waiting in line. The business was thriving.
"It seems even the little puppy likes our food! Thank you so much."
Unlike his short and stout appearance, the shopkeeper's voice was somewhat sharp as he stood a few steps away with a smiling squint. "Please come again in the future."
"With such delicious food, we will definitely come back."
"Thank you." He bowed slightly and smiled, saying, "Safe travels, and welcome next time."
I walked past him holding Tian Yuan, but unexpectedly, Tian Yuan trembled and suddenly shrank in my arms. I didn't notice at the time, but after walking for a while, I realized something was off.
"What's wrong with you?"
Tian Yuan let out a beastly roar, its dark eyes suddenly turning crimson as it bared its teeth at me, displaying an aggressive stance.
I flinched, and before I knew it, it had bitten down. At that moment, Molin struck it away with one hand. The small body collided mercilessly against a utility pole. Instead of stopping, Tian Yuan howled even louder, growling fiercely with its claws digging into the ground, fur bristling as it glared at us menacingly.
I felt a bit panicked; Tian Yuan had never acted like this before. I understood that it only displayed such aggression when faced with danger, but I shouldn't pose any threat to it.
Molin stood in front of me with a grim expression, clearly displeased. His fists were clenched as if he would strike Tian Yuan at any moment. His black pupils grew darker, reflecting no light.
"Stinky Taoist, just watch me tear you apart!"
"Come and try if you can!"
The standoff between man and pet was filled with anger, and it felt like a fight could break out at any moment. I knew they didn't get along, but it had always been playful banter—never this level of hatred.
Since Tian Yuan was at a distance from me, I couldn't reach it and could only grip Molin's arm tightly, pulling him back. "Don't do that; that's Tian Yuan."
"What the hell, Tian Yuan!" Molin pushed me aside. "It's just a stinky fox daring to challenge me. I'm definitely going to roast it today."
"Don't."
With so many people walking around, I noticed the fur on Tian Yuan's feet starting to turn red. I was afraid it would transform into a nine-tailed fox in front of everyone, which would surely cause quite a stir with Yifan.
So I could only grab the nearest Molin and said to Tian Yuan, "You should leave quickly."
Tian Yuan bared its teeth at me, and as more and more onlookers gathered, it suddenly leaped aside and vanished into the crowd, disappearing without a trace.
"Anxin, what are you doing?" Molin was quite displeased. "This is such a good opportunity for me to teach it a lesson."
" Molin, that's Tian Yuan! I won't allow you to bully it!" I looked at him with concern as his anger still lingered. "Why have you both suddenly turned like this? You've been at odds for a while now, but you were having such a good time eating together before. What happened after that?"
"What does being at odds have to do with eating? Stop bothering me!" Molin shook off my hand, looking quite disdainful. "Just leave me alone; get lost."
" Molin."
I shouted at his retreating figure, but he didn't listen and walked into the crowd. The people around us thought we were just two young folks arguing and gradually dispersed.
Standing alone on the street, I felt something was off about how Tian Yuan and Molin had suddenly changed. I glanced back at the bustling Delicious Enjoyment restaurant and felt an inexplicable flame rising within me.
I didn't go anywhere else and went straight home. Perhaps it was the weather, but my restlessness seemed to intensify on the way back. I wanted to vent my frustration, so I took a shower, which helped ease my mood considerably.
Lying in bed, I thought about where Tian Yuan might have run off to and about Molin. I felt worried yet irritated.
In the end, I decided to take a sleeping pill to help me sleep. By the time I woke up, the moon was high in the sky; it was nearly midnight.
Jun Chong would be back tonight. I sat on the bed waiting for him, but from midnight until nearly two o'clock, there was still no sign of him. On any other day, I would have been worried sick and would have called Shizui to ask about him.
But today, that feeling of irritation lingered, wrapping around my heart and making me quite unhappy. "What time is it? He has no sense of time at all. It's infuriating!"
"Just because I'm a little late, you're this worked up? Have you eaten gunpowder?"
A cool breath approached from behind, and the teasing tone of his voice hadn't even reached its peak before it was replaced by an icy coldness that chilled me to the bone. "Anxin, what have you eaten? You smell like something rotten."
"What I eat is none of your business! Where have you been?"
I didn't even know why I was getting angrier, especially seeing his scrutinizing gaze, which only made me more annoyed.
Jun Chong's dark eyelashes fluttered slightly, and a frosty light seeped through the gaps, freezing me in place when it touched me. Suddenly, he yanked me towards the bathroom. "What are you doing? Let go of me! I said let go! Can you hear me?"
But he didn’t listen at all. He lifted one leg, forcing my knees to bend and bringing me down to the floor. He pressed my head against the toilet bowl while one hand controlled me and the other pressed against my abdomen. A wave of cold air surged in, making me shiver uncontrollably.
Before I could voice my anger, a wave of nausea hit me, and I opened my mouth to vomit. It came out in a chaotic rush, emptying my stomach completely. I felt drained of all strength as I leaned weakly against Jun Chonghuai.
"Look at what you've eaten!"
Jun Chong's angry voice rang in my ears. My mind felt hazy as I instinctively glanced into the toilet. Instantly, every hair on my body stood on end; the toilet was filled with white maggots and rotting meat that I had just expelled.
