I instinctively wanted to tell Molin about this, but before my feet could touch the ground, I saw a shadow projected on the curtain.
Tall and slender, with wide sleeves billowing in the wind.
My heart tightened suddenly. I wanted to run over, but I found my hands and feet trembling, unable to muster any strength.
"Jun Chong?"
It felt so close yet impossibly far away.
I bit my lip hard, holding back tears. I wanted to greet his return with a smile, not with tears.
"Jun Chong, is that you?"
"Jun Chong?"
The voice was soft and fluid, indistinguishable in gender, yet laced with laughter. "It's not me!"
"Then who are you?"
I suddenly recalled someone else who had mistaken him for Jun Chong before.
"Who I am, you will soon find out. Anxin, I'm giving you a gift—something that can bind your soul!"
With that, he vanished, his tall figure leaping into the embrace of darkness, disappearing from sight.
My right wrist throbbed with pain, and as my body relaxed, I realized that the sky outside had brightened considerably.
"Is it another dream?"
I pressed my hand to my forehead, but a sharp pain shot through me. Rolling up my sleeve, I noticed a bamboo bracelet vividly etched onto my fair skin, resembling a tattoo.
"Could it not be a dream? Who is he? Why is the Soul Bell in his possession?"
Shaking my head, I felt a slight headache and got out of bed.
Molin was nowhere to be found. Since there were exams this week, many students had gone to school to study. I ran into Lin You and soon saw Li Li approaching leisurely, but Chu Fan was not by her side.
Upon seeing me, Li Li raised an eyebrow and walked over with a smirk. "Hey, are you here to study too? Just recite a few spells and you'll know the answers!"
Li Li's sharp voice rang out, causing many people to stop and glance in my direction.
"Aren't you doing the same?"
I didn't back down; after all, the innocent would remain clear while the guilty would reveal themselves. I believed that the truth would eventually come to light, and since I was about to leave school, idle gossip no longer concerned me.
Li Li narrowed her eyes slightly, a subtle sharpness emanating from her gaze.
At that moment, Chu Fan slowly approached. After a night apart, he looked significantly paler than before, completely devoid of the threatening demeanor he had displayed last night.
Seeing him come over, Li Li joyfully ran to him. "Fan, why are you only just arriving? Look, I made soup for you early this morning; you have to drink it all later!"
As soon as she mentioned the soup she had made, Chu Fan's expression changed, and he instinctively glanced at me.
I suddenly recalled Molin's words from last night. Could there be something wrong with this soup? Is there a Forbidden Spell controlling Chu Fan inside it?
"Anxin." Qi Zhi suddenly tapped my shoulder from behind, interrupting my thoughts. "Are you here to study?"
"Yes, Professor Qi. Is there a good place available?" Lin You chuckled and nudged me. "The library and classrooms are crowded and noisy."
"Why not come to my place? I can also tutor you."
Lin You laughed, "Professor Qi is a heartthrob and a top student. With his guidance, the exams will definitely be no problem."
"Oh, do we have the honor of joining you?" Li Li's teasing voice approached us, leaning against Chu Fan with a sly smile directed at me. "Chu Fan and I have always admired Professor Qi! I wonder if that's possible?"
"Don't agree."
Lin You whispered in my ear, but I smiled slightly. Until I confirmed whether the soup was problematic, it was a good idea to stick together. "Sure, I have no objections; just don’t know what Professor Qi thinks."
"As long as you’re okay with it, let’s go!"
Qi Zhi took my hand without regard for anyone around us and turned to leave, drawing the attention of many passersby who began to speculate about our relationship.
Since Qi Zhi was a professor hired by the school, it was said that the principal went out of his way to please him by giving him a separate lounge that was quite large—about the size of half a classroom. It was spacious enough for us to study.
Although we were competing against each other, I still needed to focus on investigating some matters. However, in order to graduate successfully, I couldn't take things lightly.
Having fallen behind on too much coursework previously, I had no choice but to grit my teeth and study hard. Hours passed as I immersed myself in my books.
Just when I was deeply focused, I heard Li Li's voice call out, "Fan, you've been studying for so long; you must be tired. Come have some soup and then continue."
"I’m not thirsty, I’ll drink later."
"No way, time's up, you have to drink," Li Li said, her expression stern. Then she realized this wasn't a moment for just the two of us and smiled lightly, her tone softening. "I made it specially for you, so hurry up! It’ll be bad if it gets cold."
Chu Fan was reluctant, glancing at me secretly and pointing to indicate that there was something wrong with the soup and that it shouldn't be consumed.
I was certain that the bowl of soup was the problem and prepared to call Molin.
Suddenly, Li Li's phone rang. "Fan, I need to step out for a moment to take this call. Wait for me, okay?"
Most people wouldn’t take their soup with them when they left, but she casually repackaged it and took it with her, which only confirmed my suspicions about the soup.
As soon as she left, I immediately moved closer to Chu Fan and whispered, "Is it that soup?"
Chu Fan nodded. "She makes me drink it every forty-eight hours. Once I do, I have to obey her commands, and my soul suffers greatly; it takes twenty-four hours to recover."
"Then all we need to do is destroy that soup?"
"Yes."
I lowered my head in thought. Lin You leaned in closer, looking displeased. "Are you two hiding something from me?"
I looked up and saw Li Li outside the window hanging up her phone. I quickly pulled Lin You back to our seats and whispered to her, "It’s a bit complicated, but first help me spill Li Li's bowl of soup. I’ll explain everything later."
Lin You and I had known each other for years; sometimes we could understand each other without words. She handed me a reassuring glance, and I smiled slightly, preparing to pretend to read a book. But then I caught the gaze of Qi Yi, who looked at me with an enigmatic smile.
He had been sitting in the rattan chair reading without commenting on our little actions. For some reason, that one look made me feel inexplicably guilty.
As I lowered my head to shield myself with the book, my body jolted suddenly; the sound of a bell resonated just within reach.
"Is that the Soul Bell?"
My first instinct was to glance at Chu Fan. He was hunched over the table, hands clutching his head, his brows furrowed tightly. It seemed that the sound of the bell had affected him greatly, further confirming my suspicion that it was indeed the Soul Bell.
Recalling what Liya had said, along with my encounter with Dream last night, I looked at Qi Zhi with uncertainty. Was Dream referring to him or that dark silhouette?
In that brief moment, I heard something drop and then Li Li's scream. I looked up to find Lin You and Li Li frozen at the doorway, a toppled teapot lying between them.
"That was quick?"
I was astonished, unsure of what had just transpired in that instant or how Lin You had managed to pull it off. But when I saw Li Li's expression, something felt off.
Under normal circumstances, being treated like this would elicit anger, especially from someone like Li Li. Yet when I looked up, I was met with her panicked face.
"Lin You, are you trying to get yourself killed?"
I found her reaction puzzling.
"Don't be so angry! I just accidentally knocked over your soup. I'll replace it," Lin You said theatrically, her eyes darting as she quickly adopted an apologetic demeanor. "If you think I did a bad job, I'll buy the ingredients and you can cook instead. How about we do this together? We're all classmates; there's no need to be upset over a bowl of soup!"
"Exactly, Li Li. It's just a bowl of soup; there's no need to get so worked up."
Qi Zhi set down his book and walked over to them, while Lin You wore an expression of feigned remorse.
Li Li, however, looked both angry and anxious as she stared at Chu Fan, her eyes filled with a panic that seemed even more intense than before.
I turned my head suspiciously towards Chu Fan, who was still slumped over the table, his head lowered so I couldn't see his expression.
"Apologizing is one thing, Lin You, do you even realize the trouble you've caused!"
Li Li shouted anxiously at her, then pushed Lin You aside and walked over to Chu Fan. I couldn't hear what she whispered to him, but he got up and left with her, both of them in such a hurry that they didn't even grab their books.
I had not seen Chu Fan's expression the entire time, but as he passed by me, I suddenly felt a chilling and eerie aura that made the hairs on my body stand on end.
"Come on, it's just a bowl of soup. What's the big deal? Such a petty person, crazy!" Lin You muttered as she approached me, linking her arm with mine and whispering, "Quickly tell me, is there something you're hiding from me again?"
"I wouldn't dare hide anything from you," I replied with a slight smile and said softly, "Qi Zhi is here!"
"That Professor Qi—Anxin said she was thirsty and wanted some water. Could you buy some for her?"
Qi Zhi showed no suspicion and nodded lightly. "You all continue studying; I'll be back soon."
"Hey, why is it me?" I lightly nudged Lin You. She grinned mischievously. "Because he likes you! He definitely won't refuse your request. Now tell me the serious stuff."
I nodded and recounted what had happened with Chu Fan last night. Lin You's brow furrowed tightly as she bit her finger in deep thought. "So that's how it is. Has Molin found the formation yet?"
"Not yet! I think we should tell him about what just happened and hear his thoughts. After all, if Li Li really gets angry and pushes Chu Fan to go after us, we're doomed!"
Lin You's face turned pale at that thought, and she quickly took out her phone. "Hurry up and call."
As soon as the call connected, before we could say anything, Molin's voice came through first. "I've found the location of the formation; I'm heading there now. Where's Li Li?"
"She was just here. We disrupted the spell she cast on Chu Fan, and that's why she left with him."
"Idiot! I only asked you to investigate, not to take action!" Molin shouted, his voice ringing in my ears. Lin You couldn't stand it anymore and retorted, "It's your fault for not being clear about it!"
"Xiao You?" As soon as Molin heard Lin You's voice, his tone softened immediately. "I'm just worried about Anxin!"
"Does worrying mean you have to yell at people?" Lin You replied, clearly annoyed. "Talk properly. What are we going to do now?"
"Yes, yes." Listening to Molin's voice, I couldn't help but chuckle inwardly. It was obvious he really liked Lin You; otherwise, he wouldn't be so obedient.
"I need to go to the location of the formation. You must help me prevent Li Li from coming back."
"How long do you need? We can't hold them off for too long."
"It's noon now; it should be at least until dusk."
After hanging up the phone, Lin You winked at me. "We still have several hours! We need to come up with a plan."
"What kind of plan?"
"We can see the school gate from here, but I haven't seen them leave, which means they're still inside the school." Lin You pointed out the window, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "This will rely on my charm."
